Election Insights Election Insights NZers are set to go to the polls September 2017 The future of political communications is understanding how to target voters using the latest tools and data. Digital offers the scale and engagement required during the elections. The US elections were won online with Trump utilising big data to hone into very specific, targeted mini-campaigns addressing clusters of people with specific concerns. Utilising a combination of digital, social and audio ads is key to reaching your target audiences. Increasing numbers of New Zealanders are using their devices to watch video, TV, play games and scroll social feeds and listen to streaming audio. * Against all odds, Trump managed to win the USA election Election season isn’t just for the candidates but an opportunity for brands to get their messages out there too. Whether you represent a political party or wish to take advantage of moments during the elections to get your brand in front of attentive audiences, or avoid certain political brands and being associated with them, the election provides a unique advertising opportunity. With political engagement at its peak, brands can use Ads that speak to the current mood and capitalise on political conversations without picking sides and aligning themselves to a particular party. Opportunities exist for the use of topical creative, especially native piggybacking on political issues and political success and failures! *Campaigning on election day is an offence Major Political Parties Policies National Party Labour Party Green Party A centre-right, conservative and A centre-left, social-democratic party. • CANNABIS REFERENDUM 2020 Introduction
Media Analysis NEW ZEALAND CANNABIS REFERENDUM 2020 Introduction This analysis looks at 281 New Zealand-based media articles and opinion pieces as they appeared online during the cannabis referendum campaign period between May and October 2020. The objective was to assess the extent to which the set of articles and op-eds, as a whole, provided balanced coverage of both sides of debate – consistent with the New Zealand Media Council’s first principle of “accuracy, fairness and balance.”1 All the articles obtained were based on the list provided by NZ Politics Daily, a comprehensive, non- partisan list of articles, columns, and analysis relating to New Zealand politics and government, produced by the Democracy Project at Victoria University Wellington. This list was used to maintain the neutrality of the analysis and to avoid any accusation of searching for articles that leaned to one side or the other of the debate. There were 203 news items and 78 opinion pieces. Accuracy, fairness and balance was assessed across a variety of measures: the headline used, the number of people quoted within each piece arguing one or other side of the referendum question, and the proportion of content arguing each side of the campaign issues. Experts who quoted research or data were considered to be neutral. Any observed imbalance in the content or coverage across the set of news items and opinion pieces is interpreted as evidence of overall bias in reporting on the referendum question. The report was commissioned by Family First New Zealand. The analysis has been audited by an Emeritus Professor who specialises in research methods and statistics.

It is produced in collaboration with the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. With permission from the institute’s researchers, we have used the same survey questions and comparable sampling method they use in their annual Digital News Report to measure public trust in news (http://www.digitalnewsreport.org/). This allows international comparisons between levels of trust in Aotearoa New Zealand and 40 countries covered by the Reuters project. In addition to the 2020 survey questions, this year’s survey includes two questions about trust in Covid-19 reporting. As in 2020, survey data for the 2021 report was collected by New Zealand online market research company Horizon Research Ltd. The production of this report was funded by the Auckland University of Technology (AUT), and it has ethics approval from the AUT Ethics Committee (AUTEC). • Gender Balance Across Sports Media Coverage in Aotearoa New Zealand JULY 2019—DECEMBER 2020
Media and gender Gender balance across sports media coverage in Aotearoa New Zealand JULY 2019—DECEMBER 2020 APRIL 2021 MEDIA AND GENDER The purpose of this study is to add to the body of evidence based on which we and others can advocate for greater value and visibility of women in sport. 2 ISENTIA / SPORT NEW ZEALAND MEDIA AND GENDER Foreword Sport is a huge part of our national identity and how we showcase New Zealand to the world. Many of our top athletes are women, but females are under-represented in sports coverage and sports reporting. This needs to change if sport’s role in our national identity is to truly reflect who we are. This report is a step in that direction. It’s about creating a benchmark, shining a light on what’s good and what’s not, and starting a conversation to create positive change. Media, sports and others are already part of that conversation. Others will follow. Everyone is invited. This study represents Commitment 23 of Sport New Zealand’s (Sport NZ’s) response to the Government’s Strategy for Women and Girls in Sport and Active Recreation, and forms part of the work we are doing to improve the value and visibility of women in sport. The study finds that women’s sport accounts for 15% of all sports coverage. That’s better than the findings of previous New Zealand studies and others conducted around the world. It’s also not good enough. 3 ISENTIA / SPORT NEW ZEALAND MEDIA AND GENDER With New Zealand set to host three women’s world cups from 2021 to 2023, we have an opportunity to showcase and celebrate women’s This study sport.
