    The Architectural Style of Bay Pines VAMC Lauren Webb July 2011 The architectural style of the original buildings at Bay Pines VA Medical Center is most often described as “Mediterranean Revival,” “Neo-Baroque,” or—somewhat rarely—“Churrigueresque.” However, with the shortage of similar buildings in the surrounding area and the chronological distance between the facility’s 1933 construction and Baroque’s popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries, it is often wondered how such a style came to be chosen for Bay Pines. This paper is an attempt to first, briefly explain the Baroque and Churrigueresque styles in Spain and Spanish America, second, outline the renewal of Spanish-inspired architecture in North American during the early 20th century, and finally, indicate some of the characteristics in the original buildings which mark Bay Pines as a Spanish Baroque- inspired building. The Spanish Baroque and Churrigueresque The Baroque style can be succinctly defined as “a style of artistic expression prevalent especially in the 17th century that is marked by use of complex forms, bold ornamentation, and the juxtaposition of contrasting elements.” But the beauty of these contrasting elements can be traced over centuries, particularly for the Spanish Baroque, through the evolution of design and the input of various cultures living in and interacting with Spain over that time. Much of the ornamentation of the Spanish Baroque can be traced as far back as the twelfth century, when Moorish and Arabesque design dominated the architectural scene, often referred to as the Mudéjar style. During the time of relative peace between Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Spain— the Convivencia—these Arabic designs were incorporated into synagogues and cathedrals, along with mosques.

    Renaissance Architecture History of Architecture No’man Bayaty Introduction • The Renaissance movement was a grand scale movement in art, literature sculpture and architecture. • The time in which it spread between 15th century and 17th century, was a time of movement in philosophy, science and other ideas. • At this time Europe was made of many small states united or trying to get united under larger kingdoms. • The Italian cities were independent, each with its special culture. • The Holy Roman Empire was quite weak, and the so were the Popes. • Local cultures were rising, so were local national states. • Europe lost Constantinople in 1453 A. D. but got all of Spain back. Introduction • Scientific achievements were getting more realistic, getting away from the mystical and superstitious ideas of the medieval ages. • The Christian reformation led by Martin Luther in 1517 A.D. added more division to the already divided Europe. • Galileo (1564 – 1642 A. D.) proved the earth was not the center of the universe, but a small dot in a grand solar system. • Three inventions had a great influence, gunpowder, printing and the marine compass. Introduction Introduction • Renaissance started in Italy. • The Gothic architecture never got a firm hold in Italy. • Many things aided the Italians to start the Renaissance, the resentment to Gothic, the discovery of new classical ruins and the presence of great Roman structures. • The movement in art and sculpture started a century before architecture. • The movement was not a gradual development from the Gothic, like the Gothic did from Romanesque, but was a bit more sudden and more like a conscious choice by artists and architects.

There, the revival of classical Roman culture took place against the backdrop of Islamic civilization. The Renaissance was brought to the city by its conquerors along with Christianity and Castilian law. When Granada fell, many Muslim leaders fled to North Africa. Other elite families stayed, collaborated with the new rulers and began to promote this new classical culture. The Granada Venegas were one of the families that stayed, and participated in the Renaissance in Granada by sponsoring a group of writers and poets, and they served the crown in various military capacities. They were royal, having descended from a Sultan who had ruled Granada in 1431. Cidi Yahya Al Nayar, the heir to this family, converted to Christianity prior to the conquest. Thus he was one of the Morisco elites most respected by the conquerors.

He trained and became a master within that tradition before traveling at age 26 to Venice, as other Greek artists had done. In 1570 he moved to Rome, where he opened a workshop and executed a series of works. During his stay in Italy, El Greco enriched his style with elements of Mannerism and of the Venetian Renaissance. In 1577, he moved to Toledo, Spain, where he lived and worked until his death.

This is certainly true in my desire to research elements of Spanish music. In the summer of 2014, I had the opportunity to travel to Barcelona, Spain and visit the various tourist destinations of that beautiful city. While I was there, I was able to attend a flamenco dancing performance. I was amazed by the talent of the dancers and musicians, who used rhythms and tones that were somewhat unfamiliar to my classically trained ears. The poetry of the music seamlessly fit in with the music of the guitars and the steps and expression of the dancers.

    Boston University in Madrid CAS SP 300 HISTORY OF SPANISH ART Summer 2014 General overview: This course is intended to give an overview of the periods, styles and artistic movements in Spain, starting with the prehistoric artistic manifestations and ending with an introduction to works from the contemporary period. Students will analyze historical context, traditional artistic expressions (painting, sculpture and architecture) and will be introduced to other more current artistic forms, such as installation or video art. At the same time, students will learn to interpret the most relevant works and prepare a critique to be presented during field trips. Methodology The lectures will give the student an intellectual framework to understand each period of Spanish Art and provide the students with sufficient tools to do the individual work. Lectures are intended to elaborate on the required readings and field trips; however, they constitute only one element of the course. Participation and presentations are an essential component of the final grade. Requirements: Students will have to complete the assigned readings before the day of the lecture. Lectures will not summarize the assigned reading but rather explore them in further depth and build upon related topics. Supplementary readings are intended for students who want to deepen their understanding of Spanish art and will serve as a basic bibliography for written projects. Students are required to attend all classes, field trips and other visits. If a student cannot attend one of these visits, he/she must do it on his/her own and submit an essay about the visit. As part of this project, we were introduced to a sixteenth-century Spanish panel painting of Saint Blaise that is part of a private collection. Using a combination of art historical and technical examination, we sought to better understand the painting and its story while restoring fragile parts of the work to their original condition. Though the invention of printing sped the dissemination of ideas from the later 15th century, the changes of the Renaissance were not uniformly experienced across Europe. As a cultural movement, it encompassed innovative flowering of Latin and vernacular literatures, beginning with the 14th-century resurgence of learning based on classical sources, which contemporaries credited to Petrarch, the development of linear perspective and other techniques of rendering a more natural reality in painting, and gradual but widespread educational reform. In politics the Renaissance contributed the development of the conventions of diplomacy, and in science an increased reliance on observation that would flower later in the Scientific Revolution beginning in the 17th century. Traditionally, this intellectual transformation has resulted in the Renaissance being viewed as a bridge between the Middle Ages and the Modern era. Although the Renaissance saw revolutions in many intellectual pursuits, as well as social and political upheaval, it is perhaps best known for its artistic developments and the contributions of such polymaths as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, who inspired the term "Renaissance man". There is a consensus that the Renaissance began in Leonardo da Vinci, La Gioconda Florence, Tuscany in Italy in the 14th century.
