In considerazione delle sue dimensioni e della sua complessità culturale il Di- partimento si è articolato in Sezioni allo scopo di comunicare con maggiore com- pletezza ed efficacia le molte attività di ricerca e di didattica che si svolgono al suo interno. Le Sezioni sono: 1) Archeologia; 2) Geografia; 3) Medievistica; 4) Scienze del Moderno. Storia, Istituzioni, Pensiero politico; 5) Storia antica; 6) Studi antro- pologici, orientali, storico-religiosi. Il Dipartimento ha inoltre deciso di procedere ad una riorganizzazione unitaria di tutta la sua editoria scientifica attraverso l’istituzione, oltre che di una Rivista di Dipartimento, anche di una Collana di Dipartimento per opere monografiche e volumi miscellanei, intesa come Collana unitaria nella numerazione e nella linea grafica, ma con la possibilità di una distinzione interna che attraverso il colore con- senta di identificare con immediatezza le Sezioni. Nella nuova Collana del Dipartimento troveranno posto i lavori dei colleghi, ma anche e soprattutto i lavori dei più giovani che si spera possano vedere in questo strumento una concreta occasione di crescita e di maturazione scientifica. SaCriFiCeS and liBationS Caneva For arSinoe philadelphoS, From alexandria and Beyond* Study of the cults devoted to human beings and especially to members of ruling houses in the Hellenistic and Imperial period has considerably advanced in the last decades thanks to a significant augmentation of the published evidence as well as to an updating of theoretical approaches. The understanding of the link between euer- getic discourse and cultic honors for sovereigns in international diplomacy has been substantiated by studies focusing on the interaction between civic institutions and the administrative networks of great Hellenistic monarchies and, later, of the Roman Empire1. Also, long-held models assuming a trend towards the ‘Orientalization’ of Greek and Roman religion, of which ruler cults were allegedly a symptom, have been re-considered and re-oriented towards a more subtle evaluation taking into account different geographical, political and social contexts in which the religious figure of a sovereign was defined2. Caneva anced evaluation when discussing what status was conferred on sovereigns when they were awarded a special relationship with the divine sphere3. In this regard, the es- tablishment of priesthoods, offerings and festivals must be distinguished from visual representations of a sovereign with divine attributes as well as from the celebration of a ruler’s special link with the gods, whether it be divine ancestry, emulation, or purported divine interventions for the sovereign in historical events. All these theoretical refinements suggest that the discussion of ruler cults should be set within the broader framework of the definition of the religious figures of sovereigns. By ‘religious figure’ of a sovereign I intend a diverse but coherent set of characterizations in relation to religious matters, as it emerges from 1) the royal administration and performance of cults and festivals; 2) the negotiation between the central power and local authorities; 3) cults and divine representations of the sovereign. Among the various topics that this large perspective encompasses, in this paper I discuss the dossier on Arsinoe II Philadelphos to investigate how the cult of a deified ruler (i.e. having received priests, festivals, and rituals) concretely became a constitutive part of the religious life of the communities

After his accession, he abandoned the expansionist policy of his predecessor Trajan and focused on securing the frontiers of the empire and on maintaining its stability. Of the utmost importance was the further integration and participation in his program of the peoples of the Greek East, especially of the Greek mainland and Asia Minor. Hadrian now invited them to become active members of the empire. By his lengthy travels and benefactions to the people of the region and by the creation of the Panhellenion, Hadrian attempted to create a second center of the Empire. Rome, in the West, was the first center; now a second one, in the East, would draw together the Greek people on both sides of the Aegean Sea. Thus he could accelerate the unification of the empire by focusing on its two most important elements, Romans and Greeks. Hadrian channeled his intentions in a number of ways, including the use of specific iconographical types on the coinage of his reign and religious language and themes in his interactions with the Greeks. In both cases it becomes evident that the Greeks not only understood his messages, but they also reacted in a positive way.

University of Cape Town Abstract The Facta et Dicta Memorabilia of Valerius Maximus, written during the formative stages of the Roman imperial system, survives as a near unique instance of an entire work composed in the genre of Latin exemplary literature. By providing the first detailed historical and historiographical commentary on Book 9 of this prose text – a section of the work dealing principally with vice and immorality – this thesis examines how an author employs material predominantly from the earlier, Republican, period in order to validate the value system which the Romans believed was the basis of their world domination and to justify the reign of the Julio-Claudian family. By detailed analysis of the sources of Valerius’ material, of the way he transforms it within his chosen genre, and of how he frames his exempla, this thesis illuminates the contribution of an often overlooked author to the historiography of the Roman Empire.

The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC.

ISBN 978-951-51-2384-8 (PDF) Unigrafia Helsinki 2016 Abstract The interaction between Greek and Egyptian cultural concepts has been an intense yet controversial topic in studies about Ptolemaic Egypt. The present study partakes in this discussion with an analysis of the encomiastic poems of Callimachus of Cyrene (c. 305 – c. 240 BC). The success of the Ptolemaic Dynasty is crystallized in the juxtaposing of the different roles of a Greek ǴdzȅǻǽǷȏȄ and of an Egyptian Pharaoh, and this study gives a glimpse of this political and ideological endeavour through the poetry of Callimachus. The contribution of the present work is to situate Callimachus in the core of the Ptolemaic court. Callimachus was a proponent of the Ptolemaic rule. By reappraising the traditional Greek beliefs, he examined the bicultural rule of the Ptolemies in his encomiastic poems. This work critically examines six Callimachean hymns, namely to Zeus, to Apollo, to Artemis, to Delos, to Athena and to Demeter together with the Victory of Berenice, the Lock of Berenice and the Ektheosis of Arsinoe. Characterized by ambiguous imagery, the hymns inspect the ruptures in Greek thought during the Hellenistic age.

Neil, who has only recently gone to Jerusalem for the Society for the Conversion of the Jews. "In the Mosque of El Aksa," he writes, "you will remember that there is a long plain room opening out at the south-east angle, called the Mosque of Omar, in which the only object of interest whatever is a recess supported by two twisted pillars, and called the Mihrab, or Praying-place of Omar. You may, perhaps, remember that the pillars on each side of this recess, of Solomonic twisted pattern and polished marble, appear to have been turned upside down, and to have their capitals of greyish stone in broken leaf-like patterns below. On vi~iting this the day before yesterday, July 5th, I discovered that a great part of the yellowish plaster had been removed from the top of these pillars, and that rich grotesquely carved capitals were exposed to view in an admirable state of preserva­ tion.
