Moon was a good storyteller 20 years ago. It seems that a conspiracy is eating at the heart of ISC around mobile ansibles which might break their monopoly on FTL communication. I found the second book to be as engaging as the first, if not a little slow to start as we watch the crisis unfold and Kylara stocking up with weapons and supplies. The plot itself, while well-paced and tightly spun, is still pretty predictable, but there's just enough suspense to keep you invested to follow, even when it doesn't offer too many real surprises. For example Ky is told that her family has been attacked and many people died. Preview — Marque and Reprisal by Elizabeth Moon. My judgement is just fine. Naturally, things don't go according to plan. Thankfully, they seem to be a good 'neutral carrier', and trustworthy, even as they're making money off of you. Menu Books. Check out the following… Ian R. I loved it! Started writing science fiction in high school, but considered writing merely a sideline. I like most everything I've read by Ms. I don't think I'm going to continue this series. First book was Trading in Danger. Stella, Rafe, Toby and Jim all bring new perspectives and flesh out the universe with more types of people, but they are not yet fully realized and their motives and characters seem formed more by the plot, rather than the other way around. Once Ky joins up with Stella and Rafe, however, things get really interesting. I think this series is better in text where skimming is possible. Look, that rating is for the edition I "listened" to. Moving Target : Vattas War: Book Two Writer Ky Vatta was a military cadet destined for great things, until an act of kindness incurred her Academy's wrath and ended her career. Ky's life, and that of her ship and crew, depends on her finding the right answers. But I like the new characters of Stella and Toby a lot, the mercenaries were interesting, and there was more action than trading, so I'll round up from 3. The only minor quibble was the distrust between Ky and her cousin in book three. I just couldn't take it. Aside from these two very minor complaints, Marque And Reprisal Call it a 4. Aside from these two very minor complaints, Marque And Reprisal is well done. Here is the synopsis… Eight kingdoms in danger, an enemy that cannot die… Count Jeddrin has received a grisly message. Books by Elizabeth Moon. But before she does, Captain Furman appears and declares that Ky cannot be the real Kylara Vatta, whom he knows to be dead, and must be an impostor planted by Osman. While stopped briefly at Allray, she discovers young Toby Vatta, who alone has survived an attack on the Vatta ship Ellis Fabery. If you see anything missing please let us know so we can add it ASAP. Company number: The Rosvirein Peace Force orders all undocked ships to leave the system to prevent collusion with the pirates and so Ky is unable to wait for Stella. When I say this book raises the stakes, I mean it raises the stakes. However, there's a feel that they might be a bit incompetent for how competent they're acting. Thankfully, they seem to be a good 'neutral carrier', and trustworthy, even as they're making money off of you. Another great read in this series. After her adventures in the inaugural volume, young ex-military Captain Kylara Vatta, child of a powerful space-trading family, now struggles to get her ancient, creaky ship spaceworthy, working, trading, and making money. Here is the synopsis… Magic will not be enough… The Lady of the elves has been slain and King Kieri injured by the iynisin, a corrupted race of elves whose poisonous touch means grisly death for all who stand in their way. For space opera with female leads overcoming obstacles and threats, I prefer Tanya Huff's Valor series or William Dietz' Andromeda series. I stayed up late one night to read it, taking advantage of it being a four day holiday weekend. Stella also offers a great contrast to Ky. It made sense in terms of story telling but it did wear on me a bit. Speed of Dark is an important text within the sf canon. Ky firing a beam weapon which she never does in the text. The Sallyon government interprets this as rabble rousing and demands that she leave the system. • A Very Short History of Cyberpunk
A Very Short History of Cyberpunk Marcus Janni Pivato Many people seem to think that William Gibson invented The cyberpunk genre in 1984, but in fact the cyberpunk aesthetic was alive well before Neuromancer (1984). For example, in my opinion, Ridley Scott's 1982 movie, Blade Runner, captures the quintessence of the cyberpunk aesthetic: a juxtaposition of high technology with social decay as a troubling allegory of the relationship between humanity and machines ---in particular, artificially intelligent machines. I believe the aesthetic of the movie originates from Scott's own vision, because I didn't really find it in the Philip K. Dick's novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (1968), upon which the movie is (very loosely) based. Neuromancer made a big splash not because it was the "first" cyberpunk novel, but rather, because it perfectly captured the Zeitgeist of anxiety and wonder that prevailed at the dawning of the present era of globalized economics, digital telecommunications, and exponential technological progress --things which we now take for granted but which, in the early 1980s were still new and frightening. For example, Gibson's novels exhibit a fascination with the "Japanification" of Western culture --then a major concern, but now a forgotten and laughable anxiety. This is also visible in the futuristic Los Angeles of Scott’s Blade Runner. Another early cyberpunk author is K.W. Jeter, whose imaginative and disturbing novels Dr. Adder (1984) and The Glass Hammer (1985) exemplify the dark underside of the genre. Some people also identify Rudy Rucker and Bruce Sterling as progenitors of cyberpunk.

  • Serious Shenanigans the New Space Opera and Social
SERIOUS SHENANIGANS THE NEW SPACE OPERA AND SOCIAL COMMENTARY: AN ANALYSIS OF IAIN M. BANKS’S SURFACE DETAIL AND THE HYDROGEN SONATA AND ANN LECKIE’S IMPERIAL RADCH TRILOGY. Marloes de Vogel 3865878 RMA Comparative Literary Studies Supervisor dr. Barnita Bagchi Second Reader dr. Monica Janssen August 2018 1 Abstract This thesis contributes to research on the genre of space opera. Space opera is generally considered the least sophisticated form of science fiction, and remains underrepresented in scholarly research. Yet, a considerable part of the greatest science fiction published over the past three decades has been space opera. Specifically, it has been New Space Opera (NSO), a renewed, innovative form of space opera that arose during the second half of the 1980s. The NSO uses space opera’s core elements of adventure and conflict to both entertain and address serious contemporary social, political, and economic issues. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that the NSO is an exceptionally suitable form to provide social commentary. I will show that the NSO is an innovation of the Classic Space Opera (CSO) in terms of both form and content, that the critical and satirical space operas written during the 1960s and 1970s aided this innovation, and that the perceived unsophisticated and clichéd nature of the Classic Space Opera (CSO) actually encouraged the development of the NSO. Furthermore, through a close-reading analysis of US-American author Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy (2013-2015) and Scottish author Iain M. Banks’ Culture novels Surface Detail (2010) and The Hydrogen Sonata (2012), which are typical examples of NSO novels, I will analyze how the narrative strategies of estrangement, defamiliarization, affect, and the novum, which are integral to the speculative and imaginative nature of space opera, are employed to provide social commentary on topics such as the oppression and dehumanization of cultural others, and on issues of identity and subjectivity formation.

It develops a framework for tracing the relationships between real world science and technology and innovation and science fiction/speculative fiction involving processes of transformation, central to which are questions of influence, persuasion, and desire. This is contrasted with the more commonplace assumption of direct linear transmission, SF providing the inventive seed for innovation– instances of which are the exception rather than the rule. The model of influence is developed through an investigation of the nature and evolution of genre, the various effects/appeals of different forms of expression, and the ways in which SF may be appropriated by its various audiences. This is undertaken (i) via an inter- disciplinary survey of work on SF, and a consideration the historical construction of genre and its on-going importance, (ii) through the development of a prototype database exploring transformational paths, and via more elaborated loops extracted from the database, and (iii) via experiments with the development of a web crawl tool, to understand at a different scale, using tools of digital humanities, how fictional ideas travel.

  • Discussion About Ray Bradbury with Author Jonathan R
Science Fiction Book Club Discussion about Ray Bradbury with author Jonathan R. Eller- May/June 2018 Jonathan R. Eller is the Chancellor's Professor of English and Director of the Center for Ray Bradbury Studies at Indiana University. He is the author of the biographies "Becoming Ray Bradbury" and "Ray Bradbury Unbound." The blurb on "Unbound" says, "Eller draws on many years of interviews with Bradbury as well as an unprecedented access to personal papers and private collections to portray the origins and outcomes of Bradbury's countless creative endeavors. The result is the definitive story of how a great American author helped shape his times." SFBC Member: In an interview with Harlan Ellison, Julie Schwartz claims that Bradbury was selling newspapers prior to making his first short story sale. Is this apocryphal or did Schwartz actually help get Bradbury his break into the industry? Eller: Schwartz began representing SF&F authors in the mid-1930s, and he met Bradbury at the 1939 WorldCon. By 1941 Schwartz felt that Bradbury was mature enough to represent, and negotiated his first (paid) prozine sale that summer. Bradbury sold the afternoon edition of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner at a street corner for nearly four years after graduating from LA High School in 1938; Schwartz and SF writer Edmond Hamilton, another Bradbury mentor, shared a bungalow in LA during the summer of 1941, and Schwartz was able to hand Bradbury his first sales check at the corner stand. Peggy Gordon: What writers did Bradbury admire? What were his "go to" books? Eller: Early on, Poe, Baum, E.R.

  • Alien Megastructures: the Possibility of Extraterrestrial Life and the Rhetoric of Hope in the Anthropocene
Alien Megastructures: The Possibility of Extraterrestrial Life and the Rhetoric of Hope in the Anthropocene Andrew Pilsch Today I want to discuss the relationship between hope, climate change, geo-engineering and the possibility of alien civilization. Moreover, I want to think of the latter two phenomenon as emblematic of a rhetoric of hope in the age of dire climate emergency. Specifically, I want to talk about the phenomenon surrounding Tabby’s Star. Officially designated KIC 8462852, Tabby’s Star was identified by Planet Hunters, a group of citizen scientists sifting large quantities of astronomical data for evidence of exo-planets, and has since gained a reputation as “the most mysterious star in the universe,” as Tabetha Boyajian, the star’s namesake and lead scientific investigator, has declared. Tabby’s Star, an F-class sun (bigger and hotter than our own) 1500 light-years from Earth in SLOW DOWN 2 the Cygnus constellation, periodically dims. Periodic dimming is often the sign of exoplanets, as the planets move in front of the particular star and this is why Kepler, the space telescope set up to look for these phenomena, first noticed Tabby’s Star. What makes Tabby’s Star so particularly compelling is that it periodically dims at a rate much greater than what would be seen with orbiting planets. While this would have, and still is, a major boon for academic astronomy research, with numerous papers speculating on the natural phenomenon that could be causing the dimming of Tabby’s Star, one paper, published in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement by a team at Penn State, speculated that the mysterious periodic dimming of Tabby’s Star could be the result of a Dyson sphere.

  • Feminist Post Cyberpunk Fiction : an Emerging Genre in Literary Writing
© 2019 JETIR June 2019, Volume 6, Issue 6 www.jetir.org (ISSN-2349-5162) Feminist Post Cyberpunk Fiction : An Emerging Genre in Literary Writing Anjali Jagadeesh Former Guest Lecturer NSS College Pandalam Abstract The popularity of science fiction in the 1970s and 1980s proved there was a huge interest in reading this genre. These novels were largely read and appreciated off the women too. The authors of this science fiction novels provides a fascinating experience to readers by interestingly weaving their stories in a speculative setting of scientific premises. As against the suppression from masculine society, science fiction has a particular affinity with feminism. The continuation of this affinity can be viewed in the subgenres too. Feminist post cyberpunk fiction is also one such sub genre which has enriched the speculative fiction. In recent times considerable progress has been attained in literature in the field of feminist post cyberpunk fiction. But as they have been sufficiently explored , an attempt has been made in the present paper to sketch out the evolution of feminist post cyberpunk fiction from the science fiction. This paper attempts to throw light on the Various focal points in feminist post cyberpunk fiction and provides examples for each type. Key Words Science fiction, feminism, cyberpunk fiction, post cyberpunk fiction etc. Article The general tendency of the human nature, especially, the masculine world is to suppress women as the second sex. But by introducing new concepts and approaches, feminism, a collection of movements and ideologies, aims at defining , establishing and defending equal political, economic and social rights for women and also helping women to find a recognized place in the society which was once denied.

  • Steve's Much-Requested Sci-Fi Reading Guide
Steve’s Much-Requested Sci-Fi Reading Guide Hello, After assembling a recommended Sci-Fi reading list for a friend with whom I’d been out of touch for several years, I realized that with slight (removing personal stuff) modifications, I could share the same list with my podcast and twitter followers who have often asked for exactly such a list. There are no spoilers here, though I do give the reader some upfront sense for the general gist of that the plot is about. I’m always careful not to go much beyond what a reader would learn very quickly upon delving into any of the books. This is by no means my own personal lifetime personal “best of” list. For example, no where is Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle’s “Mote in God’s Eye.” Nor have I listed Asimov’s fabulous Robot novels “Caves of Steel”, etc. Rather, this is just a list of of relatively RECENT reading over the past year or two. But that said… oh my lord… there are some wonderful things here! My #1 recent find was David Weber’s “Honor Harrington” series. In it we meet a modest but determined and, we come to learn, rather special young woman in a future space navy. She’s unassuming but strong, and initially unrecognized until, as a sort of political punishment she’s given her own ship to command… after which the action never stops. This is mature space opera combat coupled with deep character development, believable interstellar politics and romance. I’m probably getting ready to reread the entire series because it’s just SO fabulous: David Weber’s STUNNING “Honor Harrington” 13-novel Masterset: • On_Basilisk_Station • The_Honor_of_the_Queen • The_Short_Victorious_War • Field_of_Dishonor • Flag_in_Exile • Honor_Among_Enemies • In_Enemy_Hands • Echoes_of_Honor • Ashes_of_Victory • War_of_Honor • At_All_Costs • Mission_of_Honor-ARC • A_Rising_Thunder (And more of Honor’s early life in the same universe…) • Changer_of_Worlds • Fallen_Angels • Shadow_of_Saganami Those last three are out of the main story arc, but provide additional background and early Honor Harrington life story.
