Pramana Research Journal ISSN NO: 2249-2976 Draupadi: A Victim of Gender Oppression Harpreet Kaur Assistant Professor University Institute of Liberal Arts Chandigarh University [email protected] Abstract From the times of Mahabharata to Postcolonialism till now, women have always been disproportionated on various grounds. The proposed paper will shed light on this inequality, taking the references of the character Draupadi from great Hindu epic the Mahabharata and Draupadi, also known as Dopdi in the works of Mahasweta Devi. Undoubtedly, the condition of women has been ameliorated since ancient times, but they still are subalternised by the other part of society. The paper will also focus on the massive difference between the lifestyle of both characters and similarities in the treatment they get from their opposite sex. Keywords: oppression, Dopdi, Subaltern, women, Mahasweta Devi Literature has always been a mirror of the society, it depicts the condition of different sections of the society from various point of views in different times and provides its reader a range of theories to understand various practices exercised within the society. Feminism is one amongst these theories. As a theory, it has been developing gradually since ages, but the condition of the marginalized section of the society, the women, is not upgrading, they are continuously struggling with the age old tussle of oppression of being born a woman. Woman went through numerous issues, impediments and hindrances to end up an imperative part in the society. Previously, woman did not have any sorts of rights, she was segregated, dismissed and abused by man. By the happening to Feminism, the profile and the picture of woman have changed totally and from being a poppet in the hands of man she turns into a ruler, president, craftsman, and educator. -

The Vedas are a collection of Mantras, i.e., hymns or chants. The reciters of these hymns are called Rishis. 2. The Mantras are mere invocations to deities such as Indra, Varuna, Agni, Soma, Isana, Prajapati, Bramba, Mahiddhi, Yama and others. 3. There is not much philosophy in the Vedas. But there were some Vedic sages who had entered into speculations of a philosophical nature. 5. These Vedic sages were : (1) Aghamarsana; (2) Prajapati Parmesthin; (3) Brahmanaspati, otherwise known as Brihaspati; (4) Anila; (5) Dirghatamas; (6) Narayan; (7) Hiranyagarbha; and (8) Visvakar-man. 6. The main problems of these Vedic philosophers were: How did the world originate ? In what manner were individual things created ? Why have they their unity and existence ? Who created, and who ordained ? From what did the world spring up and to what again will it return ? 7. Aghamarsana said that the world was created out of Tapas (heat). Tapas was the creative principle from which eternal law and truth were born. From these were produced the night (tamas). Tamas produced water and from water originated time. -

To find a solution to this problem we need to look within and examine the disconnect between the roots of language in the Indian society and the use to which language is being put by people in certain sections who are not connected with India’s linguistic tradition of discipline of words. It is in this context that the classical texts on communication in India need to be explored and relevant ideas adopted for integrative and accommodative communication. -

THE VISHNU PURANA The Vishnu Purana has twenty-three thousand shlokas. Skanda Purana has eighty-one thousand shloka and Markandeya Purana only nine thousand. The Vishnu Purana also has six major sections or amshas, although the last of these is really short. Maitreya and Parashara Once the sage Maitreya came to the sage Parashara and wanted to know about the creation of the universe. And this is what Parashara told him. In the beginning the universe was full of water. But in that water there emerged a huge egg (anda) that was round like a water-bubble. The egg became bigger and bigger and inside the egg there was Vishnu. This egg was called Brahmanda. And inside Brahmanda there were the mountains and the land, the oceans and the seas, the gods, demons and humans and the stars. On all sides, the egg was surrounded by water, fire, wind, the sky and the elements. Inside the egg, Vishnu adopted the form of Brahma and proceeded to create the universe. When the universe is to be destroyed, it is Vishnu again who adopts the form of Shiva and performs the act of destruction. Let us therefore salute the great god Vishnu. There are four yugas or eras. These are called krita (or satya), treta, dvapara and kali. Krita era consists of four thousand years, treta of three thousand, dvapara of two thousand and kali of one thousand. All the four eras thus pass in ten thousand. And when all the four eras have passed one thousand times each, that is merely one day for Brahma. -

He says that Brahma, in the form of a boar caused the earth to rise from water and from Brahma is created the entire world. He recites the Genealogy of Rama's line. He informs that Aja and Suvrata were the two sons of Naabhaaga and it was Aja who begot the virtuous King Dasaratha; Rama's father. Vasishta also informs Rama that i the whole of Ikshvaku race, only the eldest son become the king. He requests Sri Rama not to violate this tradition and take over the reins of Ayodhya. Chapter [Sarga] 110 in Detail Recognizing that Rama has become angry, Vasistha spoke as follows: "Even Jabali is aware of the going and coming of this world." nivartayitu kaamah tu tvaam etad vaakyam abraviit | imaam loka samutpattim loka naatha nibodha me || 2-110-2 "He spoke in this manner, on account of his desire that you should return. O, Lord of the people! Learn from me of the creation of the world!" sarvam salilam eva aasiit prithivii yatra nirmitaa | tatah samabhavad brahmaa svayambhuur daivataih saha || 2-110-3 "All was water only in the beginning" from which element the earth was formed. Amongst those who crossed the Hindu Kush into the Panjab were the "Aryans," a name which the immigrants, both into Hindustan and (later) into Persia, ascribed to themselves. It is with the former Aryans that my present paper deals, and I will call them the "Hindu Aryans" to distinguish them from the aboriginal inhabitants of the Land of the Seven Rivers. The other tribe I will call the " Persian Aryans," but I want here to state that during part, at least, of the period covered by my paper, I have more than a suspicion that both Aryan tribes were living together in the Panjab.
