  • Shell-O-Gram November-December, 2019
Nov.-Dec., 2019______________________________________________________________Volume 60 (no. 6) Upcoming meetings The November meeting of the Jacksonville Shell Club (JSC) will be held at the usual venue, the Southeast Branch of the Jacksonville Public Library <http://www.yelp.com/biz/jacksonville-public-library- southeast-regional-jacksonville>, on the third Thursday (the 21st) - Thanksgiving pre-empting our customary fourth Thurday as it has for over five decades. The venue continues to be Function Room D and gavel time 7:00 PM. David Davies will present the shell-of-the-month, Donax variabilis Say, 1822, from Texas (R). Although he dealt with the topic earlier, he intends to wrap up some previously uncovereded aspects of this coquina’s biology. For many years the Texas populations were considered a subspecies, Donax v. roemeri Philippi, 1849, isolated from its parent taxon by the Mississippi estuary - Say’s subspecies being found in the eastern Gulf and from mid-Florida to VA on the Atlantic seaboard (including local beaches; (L). This position was supported with conchological evidence in an exhaustive monograph (Morrison, 1971). However, molecular geneticists, e.g. Adamkewicz & Harasewych (1994, 1996), found no evidence in support of this dichotomy. As I write this copy, I see that the World Registry of Marine Species (WoRMS: <http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=156776>) follows the latter analysis. Maybe members can bring in specimens from both areas as we did with E/W Florida Pear Whelks a few months back, and we can see for ourselves if there is at least a consistent difference in the shells of these two coquinas.

  • ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: PATTERNS IN
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: PATTERNS IN DIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTION OF BENTHIC MOLLUSCS ALONG A DEPTH GRADIENT IN THE BAHAMAS Michael Joseph Dowgiallo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor Marjorie L. Reaka-Kudla Department of Biology, UMCP Species richness and abundance of benthic bivalve and gastropod molluscs was determined over a depth gradient of 5 - 244 m at Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas by deploying replicate benthic collectors at five sites at 5 m, 14 m, 46 m, 153 m, and 244 m for six months beginning in December 1993. A total of 773 individual molluscs comprising at least 72 taxa were retrieved from the collectors. Analysis of the molluscan fauna that colonized the collectors showed overwhelmingly higher abundance and diversity at the 5 m, 14 m, and 46 m sites as compared to the deeper sites at 153 m and 244 m. Irradiance, temperature, and habitat heterogeneity all declined with depth, coincident with declines in the abundance and diversity of the molluscs. Herbivorous modes of feeding predominated (52%) and carnivorous modes of feeding were common (44%) over the range of depths studied at Lee Stocking Island, but mode of feeding did not change significantly over depth. One bivalve and one gastropod species showed a significant decline in body size with increasing depth. Analysis of data for 960 species of gastropod molluscs from the Western Atlantic Gastropod Database of the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) that have ranges including the Bahamas showed a positive correlation between body size of species of gastropods and their geographic ranges. There was also a positive correlation between depth range and the size of the geographic range.

Twenty-one species are recognised: 13 are described as new: Brachystomia cantaurana nov. sp., Goniodostomia bicarinata nov. sp., Iolaea miocenica nov. sp., Chrysallida cantaurana nov. sp., Kleinella pumila nov. sp., Parthenina martae nov. sp., Ividella guppyi nov. sp., Chemnitzia macsotayi nov. sp., Turbonilla paraguanensis nov. sp., Pyrgiscus caribbaeus nov. sp., Pyrgiscus silvai nov. sp., Eulimella dianeae nov. sp. and Iselica belliata nov. sp., three are left in open nomenclature. The state of knowledge of tropical American Neogene pyramidellids is rudimentary, but the assemblage is fairly typical at generic level to that of the tropical American Neogene today, with some species suggesting closer affinities with tropical American Pacific taxa. • Current Status of Philippine Mollusk Museum Collections and Research, and Their Implications on Biodiversity Science and Conservation
Philippine Journal of Science 147 (1): 123-163, March 2018 ISSN 0031 - 7683 Date Received: 28 Feb 2017 Current Status of Philippine Mollusk Museum Collections and Research, and their Implications on Biodiversity Science and Conservation Dino Angelo E. Ramos2*, Gizelle A. Batomalaque1,3, and Jonathan A. Anticamara1,2 1Ecology and Taxonomy Academic Group (ETAG), Institute of Biology, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City 1101 Philippines 2UP Biology Invertebrate Museum, Institute of Biology, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City 1101 Philippines 3Department of Biodiversity, Earth, and Environmental Science, Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19104 USA Mollusks are an invaluable resource in the Philippines, but recent reviews on the status of museum collections of mollusks or research trends in the country are lacking. Such assessments can contribute to a more comprehensive evaluation of natural history museums in the Philippines, as well as biodiversity management. This review showed that local museums in the Philippines have much to improve in terms of their accessibility and geographic coverage in order to effectively cater to research and conservation needs of the country. Online access to databases was lacking for local museums, making it cumbersome to retrieve collection information. The UST museum held the most species and subspecies across all museums (4899), comparable to the national museums of countries such as the USA and France. In terms of size, there were larger Philippine mollusk collections in museums abroad. Majority of mollusk specimens come from Regions 4 and 7, while the CAR and Region 12 were least sampled. Publications on Philippine mollusks are dominated by taxonomic and biodiversity research.

  • Tertiary and Quaternary Fossil Pyramidelloidean Gastropods of Indonesia
Tertiary and Quaternary fossil pyramidelloidean gastropods of Indonesia E. Robba Robba, E. 2013. Tertiary and Quaternary fossil pyramidelloidean gastropods of Indonesia. Scripta Geo- logica, 144: 1-191, 1 appendix, 1 table, 25 plates. Leiden, April 2013. E. Robba, Università di Milano Bicocca, Dipartimento di Scienze Geologiche e Geotecnologie, Piazza della Scienza 4, 20126 Milano, Italy ([email protected]). Key words – Gastropoda, Pyramidelloidea, taxonomy. The pyramidelloidean gastropods newly collected from one stratigraphic section and two spot localities in the Rembang anticlinorium (Middle Miocene, northeastern Java) are described and those of various ages in the collections of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden are reviewed. A total of 111 species are covered in this paper; another 22 taxa dealt with by previous authors, of which the material was not available, are briefly commented on in an appendix. The “Rembangian” (Middle Miocene) assemblage consists of 89 spe- cies. Four are identified as formerly described species, namelyLeucotina speciosa (Adams), Megastomia regina (Thiele), Exesilla dextra (Saurin) and Exesilla splendida (Martin); 52 are proposed as new; most of the others almost certainly represent previously undescribed species, but cannot be named because of inadequate ma- terial. Parodostomia jogjacartensis (Martin), Parodostomia vandijki (Martin) and Pyramidella nanggulanica Finlay, described from the Eocene deposits of Java, seem to be restricted to that epoch. The Neogene fauna appears to be composed almost entirely of extinct species. Only Leucotina speciosa (Adams), Megastomia regina (Thiele), Longchaeus turritus (Adams), Pyramidella balteata (Adams), Exesilla dextra (Saurin) and Nisiturris alma (Thiele) are still present in modern Indo-West Pacific faunas. Most Neogene species seem to be endemic of the Indonesian Archipelago; relationships with other West Pacific fossil faunas have been noted for only a few taxa.
