We measured habitat variables and the occurrence and density of the Page springsnail, Pyrgulopsis mor- risoni (Hershler & Landye, 1988), in the Oak Creek Springs Complex of central Arizona during the spring and summer of 2001. Occurrence and high density of P. morrisoni were associated with gravel and pebble substrates, and absence and low density with silt and sand. Occurrence and high density were also associated with lower levels of dissolved oxygen and low conductivity. Occurrence was further associated with shallower water depths. Water velocity may play an important role in maintaining springsnail habitat by influencing substrate composition and other physico-chemical variables. Our study constitutes the first empirical effort to define P. morrisoni habitat and should be useful in assessing the relative suitability of spring environments for the species. The best approach to manage springsnail habitat is to maintain springs in their natural state. The venue continues to be Function Room D and gavel time 7:00 PM. David Davies will present the shell-of-the-month, Donax variabilis Say, 1822, from Texas (R). Although he dealt with the topic earlier, he intends to wrap up some previously uncovereded aspects of this coquina’s biology. For many years the Texas populations were considered a subspecies, Donax v. roemeri Philippi, 1849, isolated from its parent taxon by the Mississippi estuary - Say’s subspecies being found in the eastern Gulf and from mid-Florida to VA on the Atlantic seaboard (including local beaches; (L). This position was supported with conchological evidence in an exhaustive monograph (Morrison, 1971). However, molecular geneticists, e.g. Adamkewicz & Harasewych (1994, 1996), found no evidence in support of this dichotomy. As I write this copy, I see that the World Registry of Marine Species (WoRMS: <http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=156776>) follows the latter analysis. Maybe members can bring in specimens from both areas as we did with E/W Florida Pear Whelks a few months back, and we can see for ourselves if there is at least a consistent difference in the shells of these two coquinas. -

The occurrence of the genera Lanistes, Pila, and Salalah region of the Sultanate of Oman are described. Impact of the the COVID-19 pandemic on a queen conch (Aliger gigas) fishery in The Bahamas Nicholas D. Higgs Cape Eleuthera Institute, Rock Sound, Eleuthera, Bahamas ABSTRACT The onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in early 2020 led to a dramatic rise in unemployment and fears about food-security throughout the Caribbean region. Subsistence fisheries were one of the few activities permitted during emergency lockdown in The Bahamas, leading many to turn to the sea for food. Detailed monitoring of a small-scale subsistence fishery for queen conch was undertaken during the implementation of coronavirus emergency control measures over a period of twelve weeks. Weekly landings data showed a surge in fishing during the first three weeks where landings were 3.4 times higher than subsequent weeks. Overall 90% of the catch was below the minimum legal-size threshold and individual yield declined by 22% during the lockdown period. This study highlights the role of small-scale fisheries as a `natural insurance' against socio-economic shocks and a source of resilience for small island communities at times of crisis. It also underscores the risks to food security and long- term sustainability of fishery stocks posed by overexploitation of natural resources. SIMONE ABSTRACT Spiripockia punctata is a new genus and species of Pomatiopsidae found in a cave from Serra Ramalho, SW Bahia, Brazil. The taxon is troglobiont (restricted to subterranean realm), and is characterized by the shell weakly elongated, fragile, translucent, normally sculptured by pus‑ tules with periostracum hair on tip of pustules; peristome highly expanded; umbilicus opened; radular rachidian with 6 apical and 3 pairs of lateral cusps; osphradium short, arched; gill filaments with rounded tip; prostate flattened, with vas deferens inserting subterminally; penis duct narrow and weakly sinuous; pallial oviduct simple anteriorly, possessing convoluted by‑ pass connecting base of bulged portion of transition between visceral and pallial oviducts with base of seminal receptacle; spermathecal duct complete, originated from albumen gland. The description of this endemic species may raise protective environmental actions to that cave and to the Serra Ramalho Karst area.
