DIVISION I WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2018 Championships 2 History 14 Team Finishes 28 All-Time Team Results 34 2018 CHAMPIONSHIPS Penn State edges Ohio State for seventh team title in eight years: It might have been the most exciting 15 seconds in NCAA Wrestling Championship his- tory. Ohio State’s Myles Martin, a champion in 2016 with a win over Penn State’s Bo Nickal, a freshman at the time, fired a powerful double-leg shot late in the first period of the 184-pound national championship match. Nickal (31-0), a national champion in 2017, flipped Martin to his back with a high-flyer and, with 31 seconds left, scored a monumental pin. The pin put the Nittany Lions up by 12½ points and wrapped up a seventh NCAA team title in eight years. Penn State totaled 141½ points to Ohio State’s 134½ points. Three of Nickal’s teammates – Zain Retherford, Jason Nolf, and Vincenzo Joseph — also won individual honors and three others finished among the top eight. Retherford finished his career with 94-straight wins and a third national title, beating Lock Haven’s Ronnie Perry, 6-2, in the 149-pound final. The first of five Penn State finalists, Retherford’s win cut the Buckeye deficit to two points. A match later, junior Nolf (26-1) cruised by North Carolina State’s Hayden Hidlay and the Nittany Lions regained the lead over their Big Ten brethren 132½ to 130½. Iowa finished a distant third with 97 points. Michigan (80) and North Carolina State (80) rounded out the top five.

Wrestling wouldn’t exist without challenges - that’s Contributing Editor what makes wrestling the greatest sport on earth! Six months ago, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Bill Welker F Championships were cancelled. As a wrestler, coach, and fan it was one of my most disappointing Design Director moments in the sport. I was so looking forward to meeting my dad in Minneapolis to watch some of the Cody Bryant best wrestling on the planet together! It doesn’t compare to the time that two universities dropped their Administrative Assistants wrestling programs while I was wrestling at Louisiana State University and Montana State University. !at Ann Bryant still hurts, but not just for me - for the coaches, other wrestlers, their families, and fans that so love this LanAnn Bryant sport. It actually took me years before I could support those universities. For me, that took a lot, because Shannon Wolfe Codi Jean Bryant I love other sports and had friends that played in other sports. 2 Preface This annual publication is dedicated to the pursuit and use of the knowledge surrounding the noble and timeless sport of wrestling. Each year, an annotated bibliography of the scientific research, published in English, during the year in review, will be compiled and shared with those who work in the wrestling community. It is my hope that this work will spark further research, along with helping to educate those who are in a position to apply this knowledge. I am proud to be affiliated with this great sport. Thanks to our national governing body - USA Wrestling. Thanks to the National Coaching Staff for the support that they have given to me. Rich Bender, Mitch Hull, Steve Fraser, Momir Petkovic, Ike Anderson, Terry Steiner, Vladislav Izboinikov, Shannyn Gillespie, Anatoly Petrosyan, Zeke Jones, Bill Zadic and Brandon Slay always respond. I am grateful for the chance to work with Ivan Ivanov and Jim Gruenwald and their outstanding wrestlers at the USOEC in Marquette, Michigan. That torch has now been passed to the able hands of Dennis Hall and Willie Madison. Thanks to my wife Lynne, and my wonderful children, Nicholas, Jacob and Courtney, who have been a big part of my work in the sport, and have patiently supported me. Tony Rotundo has provided the action photographs found on the cover. These are American medalists from the 2009 World Championships: Jake Herbert (Freestyle Silver at 84 kg), Tervel Dlagnev(freestyle Bronze at 120 kg) and Dremiel Byers (Greco-Roman Silver at 120 kg). Some great research was published and I commend the sport scientists cited in this publication.
