4 Head Coach Sun Devil Wrestling

5 Zeke Jones Bio Sun Devil Wrestling

Sun Devil wrestling head coach Zeke Jones enters his third season at the helm of the program and in just two and a half years has completely changed the face of ASU wrestling. Arizona State Vice President for University Athletics and Athletics Director Ray Anderson recently signed Jones to a contract that will keep him at ASU until 2021.

A former Sun Devil, Jones was a three-time All-American and national runner-up as a collegiate wrestler, as well as a member of the 1988 ASU national championship team. An Olympic silver medalist himself, Jones served as head coach of the United States Team, coaching U.S. Olympians in the 1996, 2000, 2004, 2012, and 2016 Olympic games.

He has won four World Cup Gold medals and was selected The World’s Most Technical Wrestler, one of only three Americans ever to receive the award, by United World Wrestling, the international governing body for the sport of wrestling.

Jones was Anderson’s first coaching hire, starting a long line of highly touted coaching hires at Arizona State that includes the likes of Bob Bowman (men’s and women’s swimming), Bobby Hurley (men’s basketball), and Cliff English (women’s triathlon).

“It is important we retain our high-caliber coaching hires and, without a doubt, Coach Jones has made a huge impact in his three years at Arizona State,” says Anderson.

Already building an impressive resume at the ASU helm, Jones’ first full recruiting class, including Tanner Hall and brothers Zahid and Anthony Valencia, was tabbed the No. 1 recruiting class by D1CollegeWrestling.Net, FloWrestling, Intermat, and WIN Magazine.

He continues to attract the nation’s top student-athletes, adding for 2016-17 the likes of Ali Naser, who has defeated two Olympians, Jason Tsirtsis, the 2014 NCAA National Champion at Northwestern, and Ryan Millhof, an All-American and Big 12 champion from Oklahoma.

In just two and a half years, he has also signed five No. 1 recruits in their perspective weights and six that were ranked in the top 10 pound for pound. In addition, the Sun Devils have add- ed eight cadet and junior world team members since Jones arrived.

Academics have also been a high priority with Jones at the helm as a department-high eight members of the current roster are part of Barrett Honors College, one of the nation’s top honors colleges. 6 Coaching Staff Sun Devil Wrestling

The Arizona State wrestling team is one of the most decorated programs in the west as the Sun Devils have captured 18 conference titles in its 48-year history, including 16 Pac-10/12 and two Western Ath- letic crowns. Since joining the Pac-12 Conference in in time for the 1978-79 season, the Sun Devils have been one of the most dominant member institutions, claiming half of the titles (16 of 32). The only ‘West ern’ school to have won the NCAA Championships, the Sun Devils have accumulated 105 individual Pac- 10 titles and 28 WAC crowns (133 total titles in pro gram history).

One of only eight different schools to win a Pac-12 wrestling team title, the Sun Devils’ 16 crowns rank second among league teams trailing only Oregon State, who won its 21st in 2015. The two teams also hold the two longest consecutive winning streaks in the history of the championships with ASU taking seven titles in a row (1985-91) and OSU capturing six in a row (1965-70). Combined, the Sun Devils and Beavers have won 39 of the 51 Pac-12 titles contested. Both squads also boast the most Top 3 finishes in the history of the conference with the Sun Devils’ 30 ranking second to OSU’s 40.

In the world of MMA (), the Sun Devil wrestling program has continually produced some of the top talents in the sport, both now and in the past. While former Sun Devils have held championship belts in the past, including UFC Heavyweight Champion Dan ‘The Beast’ Severn and Pride Welterweight and Middleweight (at the same time) Champion ‘Dangerous’ Dan Henderson, the current crop of talent is already turning heads. The trio of talented newcomers includes three Sun Devils that earned All-America honors at the 2006 NCAA Championships: Cain Velasquez, C.B. Dollaway and . In October 2010, Velasquez’ rise to the top culminated with his TKO of at UFC 121 where he downed the defending champion and captured the belt to become the UFC World Heavyweight Champion. Velasquez is the first Sun Devil to hold a belt (in the current system of non-tournament fighting) and also is the first fighter of Mexican heritage to hold a title in any major organization. In Arizona, a trio of former Sun Devil All-Americans are continuing to evolve the sport, not only as fighters, but as trainers. Bader, the TUF Season 8 winner, Dollaway, known as ‘The Doberman’ and the TUF Season 7 runner-up, and their former coach Aaron ‘A-Train’ Simpson still train in the Valley and are in the process of opening their own gym in Gilbert. All three are fighters in the UFC, including ‘Darth’ Bader, who remains undefeated in the light heavyweight division. Historically, two Severn and Henderson have held distinctions that no other fighters have. Severn is the only UFC Triple Crown winner -- won a UFC tourna- UFC World Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez ment (UFC 5), the Ultimate Ultimate Tournament and the UFC Superfight -- while Henderson, who has recently transitioned into the UFC, was a Pride Champion PRIDE Champion Dan ‘Hendo’ Henderson at two weight classes at the same time (middleweight and light heavyweight), the only fighter in Pride’s history to hold two belts at one time. Nearing the 30-year mark on staff with the Sun Devils, Associate Head Sports Performance Coach Rich Wenner uses his award-winning credentials to help train ASU’s men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling teams. Tasked with aiding student-athetes in growing faster, stronger, more flexible, and more explosive, Wen- ner is an integral part of balancing the needs of coaches, the demands of rigorous seasonal schedules, and the devotion to promoting tangible and intangible physical development among student-athletes. “We’re an extension of the coaching staff, so we have to be able to work with whatever their visions and beliefs are,” he said. “At the same time, we have to be creative with the student-athetes and help teach them discipline and consistency.” The evidence of Wenner’s work is clear and not just in the physical advancements impacting perfor- mance in games and matches but also the personal maturation student-athletes achieve after a dedicated collegiate career. “It’s a great feeling and very gratifying to know I’ve helped be a part of the student-athletes’ success,” said Wenner. “There’s no better profession I can think of where you get to watch young people grow and see their development fron when they first walk on campus to the moment they get their diploma.” (from ASU Magazine Sept. 2016 edition) 40 Notable Wrestling Alums Sun Devil Wrestling

43 Pres. Crow/Ray Anderson Sun Devil Wrestling

Michael M. Crow became the 16th president of ASU in 2002 and under his leadership, the Wall Street Journal named ASU in the top five for producing career-ready graduates who succeed in business. He is committed to Arizona State being a “New American University”, one that combines academic excellence, inclusiveness, and soci- etal impact. Time Magazine named Crow one of the Top 10 college presidents in the United States. Crow under- stands the importance of athletics as part of the academic experience, as he was a heavyweight wrestler and football player in high school and competed in track and field at Iowa State.

Crow on Zeke Jones: “I said to Ray, either we’re going to have a wrestling team that’s going to compete for national championships or we’re not going to have a wrestling team so you need to find the best person in the world to be our coach. Zeke Jones is our coach: Multi-time world cham- pion in wrestling, NCAA champion, ASU graduate; and at the time that Ray hired him, sitting Olympic coach for the United States Olympic Team in wrestling, former coach at the University of Pennsylvania. That is the person; the personage, the kind of character that we are looking for.”

Ray Anderson was named ASU VP for University Athletics and Athletics Director on Jan. 9, 2014. Since his arrival, he has made revolutionary changes to the Arizona State athletics department, adding sports in an industry that trends toward dropping them, with the addi- tion of men’s ice hockey, women’s lacrosse, men’s tennis, and women’s triathlon. He has also hired multiple notable head coaches in Bob Bowman, Cliff English, Zeke Jones, and Bobby Hurley, to name a few. Prior to ASU, Anderson served as executive VP and chief administrative officer of the Atlanta Falcons as well as in the sports agency busi- ness and as an attorney.

Anderson on Zeke Jones: “It is important we retain our high-caliber coaching hires and, without a doubt, Coach Jones has made a huge impact in his three years at Ari- zona State. He consistently demands high academic com- mitment and athletic dedication from our student-athletes and he and his staff worked tirelessly to recruit one of the top-rated recruiting classes in college wrestling history.”
