Sri Ramakrishna & His Disciples in Orissa
Preface Pilgrimage places like Varanasi, Prayag, Haridwar and Vrindavan have always got prominent place in any pilgrimage of the devotees and its importance is well known. Many mythological stories are associated to these places. Though Orissa had many temples, historical places and natural scenic beauty spot, but it did not get so much prominence. This may be due to the lack of connectivity. Buddhism and Jainism flourished there followed by Shaivaism and Vainavism. After reading the lives of Sri Chaitanya, Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother and direct disciples we come to know the importance and spiritual significance of these places. Holy Mother and many disciples of Sri Ramakrishna had great time in Orissa. Many are blessed here by the vision of Lord Jagannath or the Master. The lives of these great souls had shown us a way to visit these places with spiritual consciousness and devotion. Unless we read the life of Sri Chaitanya we will not understand the life of Sri Ramakrishna properly. Similarly unless we study the chapter in the lives of these great souls in Orissa we will not be able to understand and appreciate the significance of these places. If we go on pilgrimage to Orissa with same spirit and devotion as shown by these great souls, we are sure to be benefited spiritually. This collection will put the light on the Orissa chapter in the lives of these great souls and will inspire the devotees to read more about their lives in details. This will also help the devotees to go to pilgrimage in Orissa and strengthen their devotion. -

International Journal of Research Volume VIII, Issue I, January/2019
International Journal of Research ISSN NO:2236-6124 Relevance of Ancient Literary texts in addressing contemporary social issues. Mrs. Aparna Rajhans, Assistant Professor, (Sanskrit Department) St. Joseph's Degree & PG College Kingkoti Road, Hyderabad. Phone No: 8712842681 Email ID: [email protected] “All the three worlds will be enveloped in blinding darkness if the brilliant light called language does not shine eternally, so said Acharya Dandin. Language and literature play a vital role in the development of the society and in breaking down the communication barriers at individual and societal level. Literature gives vent to various concepts, emotions, and ideas that are of universal human appeal. Language and literature strine to enable human beings acquiring human values and ethics. In reformation of society, the language and its literature help regeneration of values in contemporary society. We are living in a VUCA world so to say. The reformation of society through language and literature can bring, lead or force us to abandon a wrong or evil course of life; conduct and adopt a right one. It is but natural that a language will reflect the nature of the people who use it – mirror their culture, their outlook, their goals in life. While speaking about Sanskrit, Swami Paramarthananda says, “Its richness, beauty, subtlety, clarity and rigour reveals a culture which is rich in its interests, beautiful in its variety, subtle in its depth, clear in its understanding and rigorous in its penetrating analysis. In Sanskrit there are a very large number of verses that express the highest and noblest thoughts and uplift the emotions. -

Balancing Inner and Outer
Editorial Balancing Inner and Outer As the Holy Mother Sesquicentennial Year nears its conclusion, this is perhaps a good time to take stock of what we have learned from Holy Mother’s life and teachings. As spiritual aspirants, we gain a great deal of inspiration for our interior life from her teachings on devotion, work, knowledge, self-effort and self-surrender. From her life, we see how a person living in domestic circumstances can be pure and non-attached as well as loving and concerned. She played her part faultlessly, showing how the highest ideals can be made practical in the workaday world. In some ways her workaday world was a very different place from ours. She did not face the stress of the modern workplace or such a dizzying pace of technological change. But Holy Mother’s world did include terrorism, including state terror, political upheaval, and social stress. Great teachers do not always give us specific answers to specific external challenges. Rather, they give us examples and principles that help us to make the right decisions as we respond to our own particular challenges. We have to engage in our own struggle in our own circumstances. One thing is clear: Holy Mother never attempted to escape or run away from difficulties. Think of her life in the cramped, stuffy Nahabat, without toilet facilities, with fish for her husband’s delicate stomach splashing water all night from a pot hung from the ceiling. Think of her difficulties in Kamarpukur after the Master’s passing, with hardly enough to eat or wear and the constant criticism of her neighbors. -
The Wonder That Was Sri Ramakrishna
THE WONDER THAT IS SRÎ RÂMAKRISHNA An English translation by Swâmî Bhâskarânanda of the Bengali book Srî Srî Râmakrishna-Mahimâ by Akshaykumâr Sen. PREFACE Akshay Kumâr Sen’s Bengali book Srî Srî Râmakrishna-Mahimâ is quite popular among Bengali-speaking readers of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda literature. I have translated this book into English at the request of one of my close friends who lives in Canada. The book contains many authentic anecdotes about Srî Râmakrishna and his teachings, some of which are not to be found in other books. But some of the author’s views on how the mind functions, etc, may not be acceptable to traditional Hindu scholars. These views, by the author’s own admission, are based on his own understanding and experience, and not necessarily on the scriptures. Nevertheless, this book is valuable because it is written by one who had the good fortune to have seen Srî Râmakrishna and associated with him more or less closely. In the publication of this book the following persons have helped immensely, and I acknowledge their loving assistance with deep gratitude. Ramakrishna Math, Belur, for permission to translate the book into English. Charles Scott Wirth for computer typesetting the manuscript and helping with the front cover. Devra Freedman for proofreading and editing. I hope this book will be helpful to those for whom it is intended. Swâmî Bhâskarânanda Vedanta Society of Western Washington Seattle, Washington 98102, U.S.A. 2 INTRODUCTION As mentioned in the preface, this is an English translation of the Bengali book entitled Srî Srî Râmakrishna-Mahimâ written by Akshaykumâr Sen. -

Taking Our Temperature
Editorial Taking Our Temperature In the current issue of American Vedantist, we present different perspectives on the Vedanta movement in the West, from Swami Vivekananda’s pioneering work to new models for the future. These perspectives offer a variety of views about the role of Vedanta in the West: how it was presented in the beginning, how it is being lived out in most of our centers at present, and what are our hopes for it in the future. Is Vedanta a universal philosophy independent of any particular religion? Or is it a sophisticated form of Hinduism? How has Vedanta in the West changed since Swami Vivekananda’s original presentation? Do Vedanta Centers in the West have social responsibilities with regard to the surrounding society? Should they undertake social service activities as the Ramakrishna Mission does in India? Have the centers become Hindu temples and cultural centers for a mostly Indian immigrant population? Does it matter? How should they serve what is now an American minority of members? Do native- born Americans, including the children of Indian immigrants, have different needs from the immigrants themselves? Is Indian culture an obstacle to prospective new Western Vedantists? We encourage you, our readers, to send us your opinions on these questions. From its inception, one of AV’s main objectives has been to foster a sense of community among Vedantists in the West through the sharing of views and experiences. Such sharing can encourage us to reexamine our own lives, and can also contribute to strengthening our combined efforts. We have inherited a legacy of high spiritual idealism. -

Swami Gahanananda Ramakrishna Math
SWAMI GAHANANANDA RAMAKRISHNA MATH BELUR MATH HOWRAH 711 202 Publisher: Swami Atmasthananda Ramakrishna Math Belur Math, Howrah 711202 16 th November 2007 All rights reserved Price: Printed by: SWAMI GAHANANANDA Some monks were once going to the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama at Sarisha by car. On the way the car broke down. Everyone was anxious about reaching Sarisha on time as it would be two or three hours before the car was repaired. A monk got down from the car and quietly walked away, and soon disappeared beyond the green meadows. After the car was repaired, the monks went in search of him and found him seated quite unconcerned under a tree and talking to some villagers about religious life. Unmindful of thirst and hunger, he was doing the sanctifying work of preaching for about two hours. This monk was none other than Swami Gahananandaji Maharaj, who later became the fourteenth President of the Ramakrishna Order. The pre-monastic name of Swami Gahananandaji was Nareshranjan Roychoudhury. On Durga Puja Mahashtami Tithi in the year 1916, he was born in the family of Devaroy belonging to Bharadwaj Gotra, in a village called Paharpur which was under Baniyachang in the district of Sylhet (now Habiganj District in Bangladesh). His father was Rajkrishna Roychoudhury and mother was Sukhamayi Devi. They had four sons — Rakeshranjan, Sureshranjan, Bireshranjan, and Nareshranjan. From childhood, Nareshranjan was indrawn, of controlled speech, possessing an excellent personality and leadership qualities. The qualities essential for making a mark in later life were manifest in Nareshranjan from his boyhood. Even when he was young, Nareshranjan exhibited a keen intellect, always passing the examinations in First Class at school. -
Philosophical Significance of Tattvamasi: a Critical Study
Philosophical Significance of Tattvamasi: A Critical Study A Thesis submitted to the University of North Bengal For the award of Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy By Banani Barman Guide Professor Raghunath Ghosh Retired Professor of Philosophy Department of Philosophy University of North Bengal January, 2016 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The present work entitled “Philosophical Significance of Tattvamasi: A Critical Study” is a sincere and humble attempt to bring out the significance of the Vedic mahāvākya, Tattvamasi. Though we mainly stress upon Advaitic interpretation but never limit our view, only in Advatia rather we cast our glance Dvaitavedantins’ interpretation too. Śaṁkara and his followers argued that “jīvo brahmaiva nāparaḥ”. The apparent difference, which has beginingless nescience for its root cause and is eradicated through ‘True knowledge’. According to Śaṁkara true knowledge is attainable through the realization of the purport of the mahāvākya, Tattvamasi. The Advaitins claim that Tattvamasi indicates jīva-Brahman identity. However, Rāmānuja and others have shown their deviations and departures from that of identity theory. No doubt, Vedāntadarśana is a flowing water. The various derivations, interpretations of the Tattvamasi prove it. Now at the outset, I would like to thank my supervisor and guide, Prof (Dr.) Raghunath Ghosh, Department of Philosophy, University of North Bengal. Without his continuous and tireless support, I would never be able to complete this work. He has borne patiently the troubles for helping me to complete of this research. I am immensely grateful to all the library staff of the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture for extending their kind cooperation during the time I spent on my research at their library in Kolkata.
