Sri Ramakrishna the Great Master Swami Saradananda / Tr. Jagadananda This book is the most comprehensive, authentic and critical estimate of the life, sadhana, and teachings of Sri Ramakrishna. It is an English translation of Sri Sri Ramakrishna Lila-prasanga written in Bengali by Swami Saradananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and who is deemed an authority both as a philosopher and as a biographer. His biographical narrative of Sri Ramakrishna Volume 1 is based on his firsthand observations, assiduous collection of material from Pages 788 | Price ` 200 different authentic sources, and patient sifting of evidence. Known for his vast Volume 2 erudition, spirit of rational enquiry and far-reaching spiritual achievements, Pages 688 | Price ` 225 he has interspersed the narrative with lucid interpretations of various religious cults, mysticism, philosophy, and intricate problems connected with the theory and practice of religion. Translated faithfully into English by Swami Jagadananda, who was a disciple of the Holy Mother, this book may be ranked as one of the best specimens in hagiographic literature. • The Wonder That Was Sri Ramakrishna
THE WONDER THAT IS SRÎ RÂMAKRISHNA An English translation by Swâmî Bhâskarânanda of the Bengali book Srî Srî Râmakrishna-Mahimâ by Akshaykumâr Sen. PREFACE Akshay Kumâr Sen’s Bengali book Srî Srî Râmakrishna-Mahimâ is quite popular among Bengali-speaking readers of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda literature. I have translated this book into English at the request of one of my close friends who lives in Canada. The book contains many authentic anecdotes about Srî Râmakrishna and his teachings, some of which are not to be found in other books. But some of the author’s views on how the mind functions, etc, may not be acceptable to traditional Hindu scholars. These views, by the author’s own admission, are based on his own understanding and experience, and not necessarily on the scriptures. Nevertheless, this book is valuable because it is written by one who had the good fortune to have seen Srî Râmakrishna and associated with him more or less closely. In the publication of this book the following persons have helped immensely, and I acknowledge their loving assistance with deep gratitude. Ramakrishna Math, Belur, for permission to translate the book into English. Charles Scott Wirth for computer typesetting the manuscript and helping with the front cover. Devra Freedman for proofreading and editing. I hope this book will be helpful to those for whom it is intended. Swâmî Bhâskarânanda Vedanta Society of Western Washington Seattle, Washington 98102, U.S.A. 2 INTRODUCTION As mentioned in the preface, this is an English translation of the Bengali book entitled Srî Srî Râmakrishna-Mahimâ written by Akshaykumâr Sen.

  • Sri Ramakrishna's Father, Sri Kshudiram, Gets a Divine Dream Of
Sri Ramakrishna’s father, Sri Kshudiram, gets a divine dream of his future son as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu Kshudiram Chattopadhayaya, the father of Sri Ramakrishna, visited Gaya in 1835. He offered worship to Lord Gadadhar (Sri Vishnu). One night he had a dream. He saw himself in the holy temple, in the act of offering worship to his forefathers, at the feet of Lord Gadadhar. Pleased by his prayer and worship that Divine Being then spoke to him, 'Kshudiram, your extraordinary devotion has made me very happy. I bless you. I shall be born as your son and be the object of your loving care.' Soon after this Sri Ramakrishna was born. Kshudiram became convinced that it is Lord Vishnu as Gadadhar who has been born as his son. The boy was therefore named Gadadhar or Gadai. Gadadhar, the divine child in his birthplace Kamarpukur Gadai or Gadadhar, the childhood name of Sri Ramakrishna, was a child of unusual grace and beauty. The neighbours rushed to look at the child. Those who saw him once were filled with an indescribable joy and love for the child as their very own. They came to see him again and again, even forgetting their own children. Even the people of the neighbouring villages used to come to watch the divine child singing and dancing. Gadai would often sing songs about Shiva, Shyama and Krishna, and whoever would listen to him singing would be moved. The women of the village used to give him sweets, and then ask him to sing for them.

  • Debendranath Tagore
UNIT – III RELIGIOUS THINKERS DEBENDRANATH TAGORE Debendranath Tagore (May 15, 1817 - January 19, 1905) was an Indian Bengali philosopher and Hindu reformer from current-day West Bengal, in India. His son, Rabindrantah Tagore was a Nobel Prize winning poet. Debendranath was himself a leading contributor to the Bengali renaissance. A philanthropist and social activist, his interest in democracy and in education helped to produce a generation of Indians from whom the leaders of the nation emerged in its independence struggle against the British Empire. His concern to integrate Indian and Western ideas and to be guided by reason had a major impact on the public consciousness. The desire to modernize and to industrialize but not to become a cultural replica of the West can be traced back to Debendranath, and to his influential family. The students of Sri Ramakrishna-Ma Saradas’ biographies know that Sri Ramakrishna Dev on many occasions indicated, some times in very clear terms that Sarada Devi is none other than Kali herself. We can recall one famous incident: one day while Mother was with Sri Ramakrishna she asked, “How do you look upon me? “Sri Ramakrishna’s immediate reply – “The same mother how is in the temple (Kali), the same mother who gave birth to this body and is now living in the nahabat (Ramakrishna’s biological mother used to live in the music room of the Dakshineswar temple), the same mother is now rubbing my feet. Truly, I always see you as a form of the blissful Divine Mother”. It was for the people of the modern age, The thought of Phalaharini Kali came in my skeptical and unaware of the divine nature of the mind because June 4th is Phalaharini Kali Puja soul, engrossed in physical comforts, Bhagavan Sri night and our this issue of “Chicago Calling” will Ramakrishna Dev worshipped Divine Mother as be published on June 3rd.

  • Winter 2003 “The World Is Unreal” a Helpful Way of Putting It to Our Contemporaries? It Might Seem to Imply Lack of Social Concern Or Compassion
Editorial Mahayana Vedanta Some five or six hundred years after Gautama Buddha, a new school emerged with a new interpretation of his life and teaching, emphasizing compassion. The new school called itself “Mahayana: The Great Vehicle.” A central tenet of this new interpretation was that the highest spiritual seekers are not satisfied with their own liberation. They forego their own entry into nirvana, returning again and again to help and inspire others to gain freedom. Sri Ramakrishna articulated a similar thought when he scolded Narendranath (later Swami Vivekananda) for wanting to remain immersed in the bliss of his own realization. He chided his disciple, saying, “I thought you were a huge banyan tree who would give shelter to countless seekers.” He also encouraged him to serve human beings as images of God (worshipping “Jiva as Shiva”). Vivekananda did embrace this “larger vehicle,” not only in his life but in his teaching. He persuaded his brother disciples to be concerned with more than their own personal enlightenment. He enshrined the larger view in the motto of the order he founded: “For the liberation of the soul and for the good of the world.” Vivekananda, while basing his teaching on Advaita (nondual) Vedanta, enlarged that teaching to include Bhaktiyoga, Rajayoga and Karmayoga and placed these alternate paths on an equal footing with the Jnanayoga of classical Advaita. This enlarged view was grounded in what he saw in Sri Ramakrishna’s life and what he himself had realized. A further enlargement, exemplified in Ramakrishna’s life and teaching, was the acceptance of all religions as paths to the same spiritual enlightenment.
