Started under the guidance and support of Swami Vivekananda, the first issue of the magazine, then called , came out on 14 Sept 1895. was run by one of Swamiji’s ardent followers Sri Alasinga Perumal. After his death in 1909 The Vedanta Kesari the magazine publication became irregular, and stopped in 1914 whereupon the Ramakrishna Order revived it as . ‘Now I am bent upon starting the journal.’ Swami Vivekananda’s concern for the magazine is seen in his letters to Alasinga ‘Herewith I send a hundred dollars…. Hope this will go just a little in Perumal where he writes: starting your paper.’ ‘I am determined to see the paper succeed.’ ‘The November 2019 Song of the Sannyasin is my first contribution for your journal.’ ‘I 4 learnt from your letter the bad financial state that Brahmavadin is in.’ ‘It must be supported by the Hindus if they have any sense of virtue or gratitude left in them.’ ‘I pledge myself to maintain the paper anyhow.’ ‘The Brahmavadin is a jewel—it must not perish. Ātmārpaṇastuti Sri Appayya Dikshitendra Sri Appayya Dikshitendra was one of the greatest exponents of advaita. He is said to have lived from 1520 to 1593 CE. One of his numerous works is Atmarpanastuti. It is a very moving work. The story is that once he wanted to test the intensity of his devotion. So, he consumed a datura seed which produces intoxication and asked his disciples to write down all that he spoke in that state. This turned out to be the beautiful Atmarpanastuti in praise of Lord Shiva. In this work he has praised Lord Shiva as the highest among the Trinity. This should not be understood to mean that he was a Shaivite with a bias against Vishnu. He was an advaitin and so madeविष्赁ि ्픾no शङ्करो distinction ि् �赁विवश betweenखरविर्मस Shivaि赁 ि्त㔪र and픾भूवम Vishnu.ः He expresses this November 2019 clearly in these words:न ्सम्कं ित्र ि्दः प्रसरवि वकमव㔪 स㔪ष्टम饍핈िभ्ज्म् । वकनति핀श饍핇षि्ढ्नलकवलिद्ं दुम픾ि핀न्ं दु셁啍酀 भ啍㔤ं 7 रतनो मम्रं न वि भिि赁 ििो विष्赁वि饍핇षशङ्क् ।। ‘Let Vishnu or Shankara be the purport of the words of the Upanishads. We advaitins have no dispute whatsoever on that point. My attempt is only to counter the biased statements of the evil-minded persons whose hearts are burning with the fire of PAGE SPONSOR : KUM.

    Vedanta’s Message For Our Time: Man’s Need For The Eternal Philosophy By Swami Tathagatananda Since the advent of Shri Ramakrishna on the spiritual horizon of mankind, a new epoch of spiritual fraternity had been steadily unfolding. The West has been evincing its keen interest in the ancient truth of India’s heritage. Shri Ramakrishna demonstrated the reality of Divinity by realizing the Truth in his own life. This re-authentication of the ancient truths in the life of Shri Ramakrishna is a great example of hope and inspiration. Shri Ramakrishna proclaimed the fundamental unity of all religions to a world plagued by hostility, disharmony and persecution, all in the name of religion. Swami Vivekananda broadcast that teaching to the world when religious truths and the subjects of God, Soul and immortality had lost their reality and made a mockery of religion. Various dogmatic theologies with their anti-rational and anti-humanistic attitudes had denigrated the image of religion, which was ultimately abandoned in the modern period. In that bleak, hostile world, Swami Vivekananda preached the sublime truth of Vedanta that speaks of man’s spiritual depth and dimension. He taught about a new image of man as potentially Divine. According to Marie Louise Burke, “As Swamiji later wrote to Swami Ramakrishnananda, ‘I am careering all over the country. Wherever the seed of his power will fall, there it will fructify—be it today, or in a hundred years.’ . The spiritual giants are the most tangible form of divinity through which people find solace in difficult times. Their biographies perpetuate their memory as well as promote devoutness and spirituality. Biography of saints is again becoming popular nowadays. It also throws light on the problems in writing a biography of a saint because most of the drama of a saint’s life is lived within; and charting the inner dimensions of a saint has always been a challenging task. Such studies are often inspired by veneration instead of deep understanding. On the other hand, there may be a biography written by a detractor in which sublime ideals and transcendental thoughts are trivialized. This becomes evident if we do critical appreciation of some famous biographies. Ramakrishna, who, more than a century after his death continues to dominate secular Hindu consciousness, was a key figure in what is considered to be the Hindu Renaissance of the 19th century. His biographies will be used to show the wide range of perspectives - from abjectly critical to totally objective to rank idolatry - – taken up by the authors. A big problem in interpreting a person’s character arises when the biographer belongs to a different culture. Two foreign interpreters of Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita Malcolm McLean and Jeffrey Kripal fall under this category. In Kali’s Child Kripal takes to the hermeneutic of suspicion as he claims to reveal the secret that has been hidden for over a century: that Ramakrishna was a conflicted, unwilling homoerotic Tantric.

This may be due to the lack of connectivity. Buddhism and Jainism flourished there followed by Shaivaism and Vainavism. After reading the lives of Sri Chaitanya, Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother and direct disciples we come to know the importance and spiritual significance of these places. Holy Mother and many disciples of Sri Ramakrishna had great time in Orissa. Many are blessed here by the vision of Lord Jagannath or the Master. The lives of these great souls had shown us a way to visit these places with spiritual consciousness and devotion. Unless we read the life of Sri Chaitanya we will not understand the life of Sri Ramakrishna properly. Similarly unless we study the chapter in the lives of these great souls in Orissa we will not be able to understand and appreciate the significance of these places. If we go on pilgrimage to Orissa with same spirit and devotion as shown by these great souls, we are sure to be benefited spiritually. This collection will put the light on the Orissa chapter in the lives of these great souls and will inspire the devotees to read more about their lives in details. This will also help the devotees to go to pilgrimage in Orissa and strengthen their devotion.

I admired his balanced approach to everything that had kept the San Francisco centre vibrant. In 2000 A.D. he had invited me to San Francisco to attend the Centenary Celebrations of the San Francisco centre. He took me also to Olema and other retreats on the occasion. Once he came just on a visit to meet the old Swami at the Belur Math. In sum, Swami Prabuddhanandaji was an asset to our Order, and his leaving us is a great loss.

Starting from scratch and thereafter developed brick by brick, Parivaar is being continuously developed and moulded into a unique institution transforming the lives of each of its residential members (children and adults) and acting as a training ground of highly dedicated life-committed grassroots workers. As on 1st April ’17 there are 1529 resident children (986 boys and 543 girls) at Parivaar, making it the largest and high-quality residential program for children from impoverished strata in West Bengal.
