White shirts have a long history in Western clothing. Changes in this clothing usually lie in the type of collar and sleeves as the inner for suits as men’s formal wear. White shirts were originally worn by elite consumers rather than the middle class. The middle-class people rarely wore white shirts because a special washing treatment was needed for white shirts. In addition, since shirts were used for work, they were used repeatedly as many times as possible. In Indonesia, the use of shirts or clothing similar to shirts was discovered in the 17th century as the inner layer of a jacket (kalambi) that was influenced by Western clothing. The purpose of this research is to found out the role of white shirts in Indonesia, since as found in Western culture, white shirts in Indonesia have their own history after the colonial period. The method of this research is a historical approach to see how they experience changes related to social identity that distinguishes the wearer from the upper and lower classes and also political identity.

A total of fifteen video blogs developed by The New York Times were analyzed, each containing a representation of one of the five boroughs of New York City: Staten Island, Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens.     TranscUlturAl, vol. 6.1 (2014), 97-107. http://ejournals.library.ualberta.ca/index.php/TC Transatlantic Translations of the Button-down Shirt The button-down shirt is an icon of at least two nationally-determined fashion traditions: The United States’ ostensibly upper-class Ivy League style and Britain’s ostensibly working-class subcultural street style. This article explores how the button-down shirt has been translated in these different national contexts. I will use Roland Barthes’ notion of ‘fashion narrative’ to elucidate the close relationship between the button-down shirt and the ‘national imaginaries’ of the United States and Britain. I will first discuss the origins of these two fashion narratives and explore the links between them. To illustrate the lasting impact of these fashion narratives, I will then compare the modern-day publicity materials of two shirt companies closely associated with the button-down shirt in their respective national contexts.     1980s Men’s Fashion 1980s is known as the decade of excess, and everything had to be done on a big scale. Fashion was also at its most bold. In an age of excess, style reflected the zeitgeist perfectly. The 1980s left a fashion aftershock and parents were left cleaning up stuck-on bathroom hairspray for decades. Second to the dues, attire was bright, flashy, and especially tight. Men were no exception to this rules the majority of what they wore during this time was influenced by what they were in socially and musically. Although the men of the 80s may not have worn exactly the same outfits seen on screen, there was a lot of influence in this area. The look was often cool and casual. Men’s fashion ranged from ultra sleek and modern to downright embarrassing. In the early 1980s, fashion had moved away from the unkempt hippie look and overdressed disco style of the late 1970s. Athletic clothes were more popular than jeans during this period, as were more subdued colours. Popular colours were black, white, indigo, forest green, burgundy, and different shades of browns, tans, and oranges. Velour, velvet, and polyester were popular fabrics used in clothes, especially button-up and v-neck shirts. Looser pants remained popular during this time, being fairly wide but straight, and tighter shirts were especially popular. The general public, at this time, wanted to wear low- maintenance clothing with more basic colours, as the global recession going on at the time kept extravagant clothes out of reach. The articles are grouped by decade, starting in the year 1900 and finishing in the year 2000; with a double-decade piece for the beginning of the century. Fashion is an ever-changing, growing entity that connects with every person in the United States; some embrace it while others ignore it, yet fashion has a place in the American society that is constant. Through world wars and depressions, fashion takes on revolutionary hardships and transforms itself accordingly, becoming selections of style that fit every occasion, taste, and social standard. What happens in society is demonstrated in fashion.
