Gunkel – Northern Illinois University, USA Despite what is typically said and generally accepted as a kind of unquestioned folk wisdom, you can (and should) judge a book by its cover. This is especially true of my 2016 book with the MIT Press, Of Remixology: Ethics and Aesthetics After Remix (Gunkel 2016). With this book, the cover actually “says it all.” The image that graces the dust jacket (figure 1) is of a street corner in Cheltenham, England, where the street artist believed to be Banksy (although there is no way to confirm this for sure) appropriated a telephone booth by painting figures on a wall at the end of a line of row houses. This “artwork,” which bears the title “Spy Booth,” was then captured in a photographed made by Neil Munns, distributed by way of the Corbis image library, and utilized by Margarita Encomienda (a designer at MIT Press) for the book’s cover. The question that immediately confronts us in this series of re-appropriations and copies of copies is simple: What is original and what is derived? How can we sort out and make sense of questions concerning origination and derivation in situations where one thing is appropriated, reused, and repurposed for something else? What theory of moral and aesthetic value can accommodate and explain these situations where authorship, authority, and origination are already distributed across a network of derivations, borrowings, and re-appropriated found objects? A public wiki refers to a wiki that everyone can edit, that is, it is open to the general public on the Internet with or without a free login. Anyone is welcome to add information to the wiki, but contributors are asked to stay within the subject area, policies, and standards of the particular wiki. Content that does not relate to the subject or is not of good quality can and will be deleted by other users. Also, if a contributor makes a mistake or a typo, other users will eventually correct the error. Open collaboration by anyone means that multiple articles can be written very fast simultaneously. And, while there may be some vandalism or edit wars, quality of the articles will generally improve over time after many editors have contributed. The biggest public wiki in the world, with over 75,000 contributors, is Wikipedia, "the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit" [1]. Wikipedia has over 2.8 million articles in the English version, which includes over 16 million wiki pages, and is one of the top ten most popular websites in the United States [2]. There are versions of Wikipedia in ten different languages, and articles in more than 260 languages. Wikipedia is operated by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation [3] which pays a small group of employees and depends mainly on donations. There are also over 1,500 volunteer administrators with special powers to keep an eye on editors and make sure they conform to Wikipedia's guidelines and policies. -

ABSTRACT JANE AUSTEN UNCENSORED: A CRITICAL AND PEDAGOGICAL STUDY OF AUSTEN’S LETTERS FOR THE COLLEGE CLASSROOM Amanda Smothers, Ph.D. Department of English Northern Illinois University, 2016 William Baker and Lara Crowley, Co-Directors A vast amount of literary critical and scholarly work on Jane Austen’s writing, including her juvenilia, has been published. However, insufficient attention has been paid to her extant letters and their significance. This dissertation redresses the imbalance and is the first extensive critical, scholarly discussion of Jane Austen’s correspondence and their pedagogical applications. In order to rectify the disparity, this dissertation examines Jane Austen’s surviving letters to determine how to contextualize them historically and biographically and in relation to her fiction for college composition and undergraduate literature courses. Background information on letter writing in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century provides context for Austen’s letter writing, comparing her content and style to common practices. This study also investigates the world of Austen’s letters, focusing on historical and biographical context, and scrutinizing the letters as a source of information about middle-class Regency England; Austen’s family and social circles; and the author herself, including her personality, attitudes toward current events, views on works of literature, and references to her writing and publication processes. Moreover, Austen’s letters would be beneficial as a theoretical pedagogical tool for teaching not only the novels but the world of her novels through an examination of her letters. Throughout my dissertation, previous work on teaching Austen and teaching with letters (both as a teaching tool and as a writing method) is incorporated, analyzed, and adapted. -

In wikiHow and other resources, such instructions are subject to revision edits on a regular basis. Do these edits improve instructions only in terms of style and correctness, or do they provide clarifications necessary to follow the instructions and to accomplish the goal? We describe a resource and first studies towards answering this question. Specifically, we create wikiHowToImprove, a collection of revision histories for about 2.7 million sentences from about 246 000 wikiHow articles. We describe human annotation studies on categorizing a subset of sentence-level edits and provide baseline models for the task of automatically distinguishing “older” from “newer” versions of a sentence. Frankenfiction: Monstrous Adaptations and Gothic Histories in Twenty -First -Century Remix Culture Doctor of Philos ophy in English Literatur e, 2017 Megen de Bruin -Molé School of English, Communication and Philosophy Cardiff University ii Thesis Summary In the twenty -first century, the remix, the mashup, and the reboot have come to dominate Western popular culture . Consumed by popular audiences on an unprecedented scale , but often derided by critics and academics, these texts are the ‘monsters ’ of our age —hybrid creations that lurk at the limits of responsible consumption and acceptable appropriation . Like monsters , they offer audiences the thrill of transgression in a safe and familiar format , mainstreaming the sel f- reflexive irony and cultural iconoclasm of postmodern art . Like other popular texts before them, remixes, mashups, and reboots are often read by critics as a sign of the artistic and moral degeneration of contemporary culture. This is especially true within the institutions such remixes seem to attack most directly : the heritage industry , high art, adaptation studies, and copyright law. With this context in mind, in this thesis I explore the boundaries and connections betwee n remix culture and its ‘ot hers ’ (adaptation, parody, the Gothic, Romanticism, postmodernism ), asking how strong or tenuous they are in practice. I do so by examining remix culture ’s most ‘monstrous ’ texts: Frankenfic tion s, or commercial narrative s that insert fantastical monsters (zomb ies, vampires, werewolves, etc.) into classic literature and popular historical contexts. Frankenfiction is monstrous not only because of the fantastical monsters it contains, but because of its place at the margins of both remix and more established modes of appropriation .
