WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT

June 4, 2018

Hello Fellow Beekeepers,

I hope you’ve made your hotel reservations for August 13-17, 2018 in Hampton, Virginia with plans to join us at this year’s EAS Short Course and Conference. Our team has been working hard to secure the most erudite and engaging speakers to further your beekeeping knowledge. But we’ve not neglected your entertainment either; we have at least one social activity scheduled each day to ensure that you and your family enjoy the week partaking in the historical, cultural, and recreational attractions Hampton has to offer.

Planning EAS 2018 has been a team effort that would not have happened without much collaboration. Special thanks go to Karla Eisen, Virginia’s EAS State Director and Program Chair for 2018. Working with Dr. Rick Fell, Virginia’s retired Extension Apiculturist, and Dr. Jennifer Tsuruda, Clemson University’s Apiculture Specialist, Karla has assembled a stellar lineup of over 70 speakers from the US, England, Ireland and New Zealand. It’s not often one has the opportunity to hear such a diverse group of speakers under one roof!

This year’s apiary will also be extremely diverse, including Top Bar Hives and Warre hives in addition to the traditional Langstroth hives. Make sure you pack your veil to learn the beekeeping hacks for managing these alternative hives firsthand.

We are very excited to accommodate all of our vendors in one room this year and are thrilled that so many vendors are retuning. Additionally, we have many vendors who are new to EAS joining us. From beekeeping supplies to books, to glittering glass jewelry, we’ll have much to offer in the vendor hall.

And don’t forget the Honey Show- you have to be in it to win it! Bring your best honey, beeswax, mead and more to the competition. You may go home with a silver tray in addition to bragging rights. Even if you don’t want to compete, bring up to three jars of honey for the Honey Exchange and go home with honey from somewhere else in the world.

EAS’s crown jewel, the Master Beekeeper Program, will once again be certifying beekeepers in the oldest and most prestigious certification program of its kind in the US. Begun by Dr. Roger Morse of Cornell University, the EAS Master Beekeeper Program certifies experts in the beekeeping industry. For those wishing to participate, sign up in advance and make sure to attend the preparatory sessions prior to testing.

Whew! That’s a lot going on in five days and you won’t want to miss a minute of it. Virginia beekeepers extend a hearty welcome to our fellow beekeepers from around the globe and invite you join us as we celebrate all things honey bee “Where it all Began” in North America. Hope to see you in August!

Sincerely,

Pam Fisher 2018 EAS President Virginia State Beekeepers Association Past President Chesapeake, Virginia 4 EAS JOURNAL 2018 HONEY BEE HEALTH COALITION

The first grabs the attention of the worker bees by “co-opting” the larval food-begging pheromone. The second prompts the bees to remove the dying and decomposing brood. These two pheromones together induce hygienic behavior more consistently then when alone. Hygienic bees are much better at detecting and removing brood with these odors than non-hygienic bees.

McAfee explains, “Both molecules are binding partners for hygienic behavior-associated odorant binding proteins – two proteins that are used as biomarkers for selective breeding of hygienic behavior.” Her goal in her final year is to determine how the honey bee antennae are linked to hygienic behavior at the molecular level. 10 EAS JOURNAL 2018

By Brenda Kiessling

Abigail Sennett, from Maine, has been chosen as the 2018 Mann Lake Scholar for EAS.

This is a youth scholarship with candidates from age 18-25 (30 if a veteran). The scholarship provides $1000 for the successful candidate to attend EAS. Travel is covered to $500, registration fees are waived, and the remaining $500 usually covers room, board, and the activities that these energetic young people want, such as field trips, banquets, etc.

We are fortunate this year to have such a qualified Note to EAS members: if you have a young person young person: she has been involved in bees ‘my working in bees with you, or know of such a person, whole life’. The Directorship of a state/province is an elected position and in order to assure that the terms of the majority of the board of directors will not expire at once, the Directors’ terms for the states in the EAS region expire at staggered intervals. The listing of the Director positions in the back of the journal indicate the term of each Director. Currently there are positions that will expire August 2018 for the following states/provinces:

• Connecticut • Indiana • Louisiana • Maine • Maryland • New York • Vermont • Canadian Maritime Provinces

States without Directors at this point are:

• Mississippi • Ohio • Ontario • Wisconsin • Canadian Maritime Provinces

I would encourage EAS members to consider running for the Directorship of their State or Province. Directors are appointed by each state, province or the Master Beekeeper group. Appointments are for a four-year term beginning immediately after the election at the annual business meeting. Directors can serve two consecutive four-year terms. After completion of two four-year terms, a director must take a break of four years (one term). He or she may then serve two more consecutive terms. Applications for nominations (self or otherwise) may be made through your State/Provincial Association to the EAS Secretary.

The duties of a Director are clearly laid out in the EAS By-Laws (http://www.easternapiculture.org) and EAS Policy and Procedures. The implementation of these duties, however, may take many forms and reflect each individual’s unique approach with their State Associations and local bee clubs. Share your knowledge, experience and energy with your State and Regional Association! 22 EAS JOURNAL 2018

Honoring Native Land. Native American Indian Chief to Conduct Opening Blessing Ceremony for EAS Conference Wednesday Aug. 15th at 8:15

EAS 2018 is proud to be able to Honor Native Land this year. It is commonplace in Tribal communities to open events and gatherings by acknowledging the traditional Indigenous inhabitants of the land. This is one way to honor the history that has led us all to this moment and is seen by some as a step towards healing and reconciliation. Thanks to Kim Epperson of the Nansemond Beekeepers Association, EAS welcomes Chief Lee Lockamy who will conduct a brief opening ceremony for the conference early Wednesday morning.
