  • Elfen Lied” Christie Lee Barber, Macquarie University, New South Wales, Australia
The Displaced Self in “Elfen Lied” Christie Lee Barber, Macquarie University, New South Wales, Australia Abstract: The self that is the sum of two or more identities, which are often incongruous, appears regularly across various genres in Japanese manga (comics) and anime (animation). Through such characters – from cross-dressing princesses to cyborg assassins – manga and anime challenge the boundaries of gender, humanness, sexuality and class; and in so doing, explore notions of the self and other. In a traditionally conformist, group-oriented society like Japan, manga and anime create space for displacement and discovery outside of rigid social pressures. To examine the fragmented self in detail, this paper will analyse “Elfen Lied”, a manga and anime series for young adult males. The female protagonist of this often gory narrative, about a race of violent mutant humans subjected to experimentation and abuse, is severely fragmented, and this paper will place particular focus on the way in which “Elfen Lied” displaces the self through this multifaceted character. This paper will show that “Elfen Lied” incorporates a range of affective elements, which appeal to the desires and fantasies of male readers, and simultaneously creates various positions from which readers may explore concerns about their sense of self and their place in society. Keywords: Japanese Manga, Japanese Anime, Self, Gender HIS PAPER AIMS to provide two interpret- of themes such as Otherness, conformity, discrimin- ations of the fragmented central character of ation and abuse. the manga and anime series, Elfen Lied The manga series of Elfen Lied, by Okamoto Lynn T 岡本倫 (Erufen Riito).

Schmalz, Stephen A. Keating and Jin Ha Lee Revised 19 March 2018 Accepted 3 May 2018 Information School, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, USA Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to improve the understanding of relevant information features for users seeking anime recommendations. Design/methodology/approach – The study uses content analysis of 396 recommendation request threads from the online forum at Anime News Network. Findings – In total, 19 important anime information features were identified, including Work, Theme, Genre, Audience, Mood, while Artwork/Visual Style, Audio Style, and Language were mentioned less frequently. However, when mentioned, these codes were discussed with specificity and depth. Research limitations/implications – This study analyzed a relatively small number of 396 forum records, without demographic information. Using content analysis of online forum threads written by real users provided both informational breadth and depth. Future studies would benefit from using content analysis to investigate unfamiliar multimedia information and user groups. Practical implications – The findings of this study can be implemented in anime-related databases and information systems to enhance organization, browsing/retrieval, and recommendation of anime, which can be further utilized for other audiovisual materials. Originality/value – This is one of the few studies that investigate what anime users need and want. This research examines an understudied cultural medium, underserved by current research, despite an expanding community of anime users.

We in the West differentiate between “comics” and “graphic novels,” as the former conjures up images of bespectacled nerds lining up to purchase the latest issue of a Deadpool comic, and the latter brings to mind more serious material like Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir Fun Home or Art Spiegelman’s Maus, which, respectively, deal with heavy subjects like sexuality and the trauma of a Holocaust survivor.

I’m so grateful for her ongoing support, kind words, incredible feedback and her willingness to read through so many of my drafts. All her support and guidance has meant so much to me, she truly helped me in pushing through my postgraduate years. I’d also like to thank both Emma and Glenn for all their support throughout my thesis, and patiently proofreading my thesis and giving me great feedback. Finally thank you to all my friends and family for all their company and support when I needed it, this has definitely been a challenging year! II Abstract Where progression towards gender equality is concerned, Japan lags behind most other developed countries with its culture which heavily values tradition. However, its traditional gender roles may be changing as the birth-rate declines and women take up the increasing opportunities opening up for them in the workplace.
