MARCH 1999 15 -----------[ ONE-OETAIL-AT-A-TIME ] ----------- Photos from the collection of Louis A. Ma rre '.L he GP38-2 was a benchmark diesel for Electro-Motive. It was the locomotive that EMD used to usher in the "Second Generation" of com • puter-programmed controls to minimize wheelslip and maximize fuel consump tion. The GP38-2, with 2188 units sold, is easily the most common of the Second Generation EMD four-axle diesels. These GP38-2 diesesl were part of the Rock's 4300-4355 and 4368-4379 series purchased in 1976-78. They were not equipped with dyanmic brakes, but did sport snowplows; both indications of the windswept praide routes of tbe Rock. Both of these units were fitted with early EMD trucks that lack the shock absorbers that are common to most GP38-2 diesels.
