The Village provides a unique field study opportunity for students to gather information and formulate questions, and compare their lives with life in the 1800s. Your students will interact directly with costumed staff and hear about the role of women, men and children, and how they dealt with challenges like food, shelter, clothing, work and transportation. Environmental factors shaping settlement and land use will also be explored. Horse-drawn boat and wagon rides included. Group size: Minimum 20 Duration: Up to a full day (9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.); 3 hours recommended Level: Any age group Cost: $8.85 plus tax per student. Combine with Miniature Train $2.50 plus tax added to their group rate per person 1 VILLAGE OVERNIGHT LIVE-IN ADVENTURE* DAY-TIME ADVENTURE* May, June and September Immerse yourself in the past for a day! The Live-In Adventure is a unique opportunity to experience everyday life in the 19th century. Under the guidance of Village staff, students are outfitted with authentic period clothes and introduced to integrated learning activities such as baking over an open hearth, tinsmithing, sewing and blacksmithing. Milk cows, help with farm chores, and attend a one-room school house. The overnight program begins at 1 p.m. and finishes at 11 a.m. the next day. For schools or groups who are unable to spend the night, Upper Canada Village now offers a day version of the Live-In from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Group size: Minimum 20 Duration: 1 p.m. to 11 a.m. the next day for the overnight adventure; 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for day time adventure Level: Grades 3 to 8 Cost: $54.86 per student (meals not included) *Spaces are limited A comprehensive Teacher’s Guide with menu suggestions, evening activities and pre-trip/post-trip ideas is included. See you next year! ~ Jack, Teacher, WO Mitchell School 2 SHEEP SHEARING Tuesdays & Wednesdays, May 28, 29, June 4 & 5 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. & 1 to 3 p.m. Celebrate spring on the farm, witness the sheep being shorn, and meet the new lambs. Learn about the importance of wool to early settlers, and how fleece is washed, carded and spun by hand at McDiarmid House and by machine at the Woollen Mill. Included in your Upper Canada Village visit GRADE 3 SPECIAL AcTIVITY DAYS May 14 to 17 Explore life in the 1860s while taking advantage of a series of integrated learning activity centres tailored specifically to the Social Studies, English, Mathematics and Science and Technology strands of the Grade 3 Ontario Curriculum. Play a game to compare our diet with that of early settlers, use simple tools to carry a load, see and experience early transportation, recite short poems and rhymes, attend a one-room school house to learn about various settler communities, make your own quilt pattern, measure boards at the Sawmill and more. Listen to the bilingual commentary and learn about the important role of the railroad and the St. Lawrence River. Group size: Minimum 20, maximum 60 students per ride Duration: 20 minute train ride and up to a full-day at Upper Canada Village Level: Any age group Cost: $8.85 plus tax per student. Combine with Miniature Train $2.50 plus tax added to their group rate per person Save $3.50 on your Miniature Train ride by combining it with a visit to Upper Canada Village when you book. 4 TEACHERS APPRECIATION PROGRAM Our Teachers Access to History Pass Program is designed to increase accessibility to Upper Canada Village and Fort Henry Historic Sites for all teachers in Ontario and Quebec currently teaching students in Kindergarten to grade 12. Registered teachers can enjoy the following: • Free admission to Upper Canada Village’s core day programming and Discovery Centre • Free admission to The Battle Of Crysler Farm Visitor Centre • Free admission to Fort Henry’s core day programming • Access to the online teacher resources • Invitations to special events • Field trip planning information • Free access to the UCV library – appointment required • Newsletters featuring educational programs and activities 5 MEDIEVAL MONDAY A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN EARLY SOCIETY Monday, June 10 - full day Broaden students’ awareness of the history and culture of early societies through a full day of discovery and action-packed fun at a Medieval encampment adjacent to Upper Canada Village. Students will learn about medieval life across the globe through the eyes of its warriors, royalty, medieval families, artisans, merchants and buskers; they can cheer for their favourite competitor’s homeland at the Knights of Valour Jousting Show. Hands-on games and activities, theatrical performances, comedy acts, music, dance and magic add to the festive atmosphere. Group size: Minimum 20 Duration: Up to a full day (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.); 3 hrs recommended Level: Recommended for Grade 4; any age group welcome Cost: $10.62 plus tax per student 6.
