    Keep liquor sales public so all profits benefit Saskatchewan families Why risk losing millions in public revenue? ° All the money earned by our province's public liquor stores - $252 million last year - is returned to Saskatchewan families and communities – and helps pay for services like schools, hospitals, roads, parks and recreation. It’s NOT a choice between hospitals or liquor stores ° Don’t be fooled by Brad Wall saying that it’s a choice between spending taxpayers’ money on building new hospitals or on new liquor stores. ° A public liquor store is not a drain on provincial finances. It is a money- making asset. The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) earns more than enough revenue to cover all of the costs of building additional stores. No public tax dollars are needed to construct new liquor outlets. Each additional new store would easily pay for itself, and still earn millions - money that could help fund hospitals and schools. Four new private stores will cost taxpayers a bundle ° Government’s decision to let four new private liquor stores open – two in Regina and two in Saskatoon – will cost taxpayers between $3.5 to $7.5 million each year in lost revenue. That’s money SLGA could have earned if the new liquor stores were public. Over the years, those losses will grow, depriving families and communities of millions for needed services.1 Public system is more profitable ° Saskatchewan’s public liquor stores are more effective at generating profits for the province than private liquor systems. Alberta has lost almost $1.5 billion in revenue from liquor sales since it privatized stores in 1993.

    The Cypress Hills and Frenchman River Valley Written by Belinda Riehl-Fitzsimmons Introduction The Cypress Hills and Frenchman River Valley are found in the southwestern corner of the province. The area includes communities such as Maple Creek, Shaunavon, Ponteix and Val Marie. Past geological events shaped the land, and people have adapted to its diverse environments since the retreat of the glaciers. Some of the beautiful exposed rock formations throughout the area are about 80 million years old (Upper Cretaceous), with the bedrock of the Cypress Hills being between 16 and 65 million years old (Miocene). The last glacier, called the Laurentide, flowed around the Cypress Hills, leaving it untouched. At an elevation of about 1,392 m, it is the highest point of land in the province. The Cypress Hills area, found in southwestern Saskatchewan and southeastern Alberta, is a very unique location for many reasons. First, it was the only area in the province not covered by glaciers during the last Ice Age. Second, it contains some of the oldest archaeological sites in the province. Third, it had and still has an exclusive landscape and climate due to its elevation. Fourth, because of its elevation and unique resources, it was a popular area for humans to live. The Frenchman River Valley extends from the south side of the Cypress Hills through Grasslands National Park and into northern Montana. The Frenchman River is part of the Missouri-Mississippi River drainage system and is over 300 km long. The river formed as a glacial meltwater channel. The locals call the river by another name, based on the white clay in the area.

Abstract On the western flank of the Williston Basin in southwestern Saskatchewan, CO2 occurs in natural accumulations within Devonian carbonates and Cambrian siliciclastics. Inert gases from some carbonate reservoirs contain 3 greater than 80% CO2 and have sustained flow rates up to 425 000 m /day. Early estimates of this resource suggested nearly two million tonnes of CO2 or about one billion cubic metres of recoverable gas are present in these rocks. These natural CO2 occurrences are found about 400 km west of the site of the IEA Weyburn CO2 Storage and Monitoring Project, which is directed toward assessing the potential for safe geological storage of anthropogenic CO2 in Mississippian carbonates. This study is focused on the Devonian natural CO2 accumulations because of geological similarity to the Weyburn injection site and because they contain the greatest amount of CO2. Inert gases in southwestern Saskatchewan, including variable amounts of N2, He, and CO2, are generally trapped in Devonian strata of the Duperow Formation within a succession of thin cycles of carbonates capped by evaporite units. The cycles resulted from deposition within shallow, periodically restricted waters along a carbonate platform. The strata vary from dolomitized limestones to limestones. Within reservoir intervals, porosities are generally around 6 to 8%, but may be as high as 18%.
