  • FRED NEIL LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
FRED NEIL LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. Fred Neil (16 th March 1936 –7th July 2001) was one of the most compelling folk singer-songwriters in the 1960s and early 1970s. His marvellously deep, rich and impossibly low baritone enchanted everyone who has ever heard a Fred Neil song - and continues to do so. Surely one of the most beautiful voices in music. Bob Dylan said, “Fred had a strong, powerful voice, almost a bass voice, and a powerful sense of rhythm. He used to play mostly the type of songs that Josh White might sing. I used to sing and play harmonica for him, and then once in a while get to sing a song.” Yet as performer success eluded Fred, mainly because it was the last thing he pursued. A reluctance to tour didn’t help much either (a trait he shared with Bobby Charles and Harry Nilsson). According to his producer, Nik Venet, Fred was “probably the most famous and financially successful ‘cult artist’ in the history of the world...and could have been even bigger if he’d wanted to be....but he just didn’t!” Fred Neil showed up unexpectedly and was gone before you knew it. A loner and somewhat of a recluse, he was exceedingly hard to get to know and thus remained an enigma to most. John Sebastian, who played on his two Elektra albums, describes his background as “sketchy”. He is best known to the world through other people’s recordings of his material, such as ‘Everybody’s Talkin’’, made famous by Harry Nilsson as the theme to the movie Midnight Cowboy (and earned a Grammy) and ‘Other Side of This Life’, recorded by several but most notably by Jefferson Airplane.

My early musical heroes were Dion, Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka, Little Eva, Ray Charles, Chubby Checker, Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison, The Four Tops and, Stevie Wonder…. My parents were also music fans. • John Mellencamp
JOHN MELLENCAMP Born October 7, 1951 in Seymour, Indiana, John Mellencamp fell in love with music at an early age and was gigging in local bars and fronting a soul band by the time he was 14. His professional music career began in earnest in 1976 when MCA Records released his first album, The Chestnut Street Incident. His manager dubbed him Johnny Cougar out of his belief that nobody would buy a record by anybody named Mellencamp. John protested but was overruled and eventually, of course, reclaimed his birth name as his public name. After releasing a few albums, he broke out in 1979 with his first hit, "I Need A Lover" In 1982 his fifth album American Fool was the year's best-selling album on the strength of two huge hits, "Hurts So Good," and the number 1 single "Jack & Diane,"!! The albums that followed in the 80's, Uh-Huh, Scarecrow, Lonesome Jubilee, and Big Daddy, were released under the name John Cougar Mellencamp. Hit singles during this period included "Crumblin Down," "The Authority Song," "Small Town," "Rain On The Scarecrow," "Lonely Ol Night," ""R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.," "Paper In Fire," "Check It Out," "Cherry Bomb," "Pop Singer," and "Jackie Brown." Mellencamp took the music on the road with a band that many considered the best in the business, playing approximately 1,000 shows around the globe during the decade. In 1985, John's concern for the plight of the American farmer, which had been voiced in the Scarecrow album, brought him together with Willie Nelson and Neil Young in launching Farm Aid.

TATE STREET, THAT GREAT STREET: CULTURE, COMMUNITY, AND MEMORY IN GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA by Ian Christian Pasquini A thesis submitted to the faculty of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Charlotte 2015 Approved by: ____________________________ Dr. Aaron Shapiro ____________________________ Dr. John Cox ____________________________ Dr. Dan Dupre ii ©2015 Ian Pasquini ALL RIGHTS RESERVED iii ABSTRACT IAN CHRISTIAN PASQUINI. Tate Street, That Great Street: Culture, Community, and Memory in Greensboro, North Carolina (Under the direction of DR. AARON SHAPIRO) Tate Street represents a cultural center in Greensboro, North Carolina. This work outlines the varying social groups, organizations, and institutions that defined Tate Street’s cultural identity between 1960 and 1990. Tate’s venues and spaces acted as backdrops to the cultural shifts on Tate Street. Three venues act as subjects through which to research Tate Street. Through a collection of interviews, art, video, magazines, newspapers, and pictures, this work connects with historical memory to outline Tate’s local and national historical significance. The work connects with a historical documentary made up of interviews as well as primary source materials to engage with Tate’s historical actors. iv DEDICATION Engaging with Tate’s history required the dedication of a small village of interested parties. I would be remiss in not thanking Tate’s community at large – many people have offered both their time and energy to assisting this project and will remain unheralded. This work is a reflection of the strength of Tate’s community which has both inspired and welcomed my inquiries.

  • David Menconi
David Menconi “But tonight, we’re experiencing something much more demented. Something much more American. And something much more crazy. I put it to you, Bob: Goddammit, what’s goin’ on?” —Dexter Romweber, “2 Headed Cow” (1986) (Or as William Carlos Williams put it 63 years earlier: “The Pure Products of America/Go crazy.”) To the larger world outside the Southeastern college towns of Chapel Hill and Athens, Flat Duo Jets’ biggest brush up against the mainstream came with the self-titled first album comprising the heart of this collection. That was 1990’s “Flat Duo Jets,” a gonzo blast of interstellar rockabilly firepower that turned Jack White, X’s Exene Cervenka and oth- er latterday American underground-rock stars into fans and acolytes. In its wake, the Jets toured America with The Cramps and played “Late Night with David Letterman,” astounding audiences with rock ’n’ roll as pure and uncut as anybody was making in the days B.N. (Before Nirvana). But that kind of passionate devotion was nothing new for the Jets. For years, they’d been turning heads and blowing minds in their Chapel Hill home- town as a veritable rite of passage for music-scene denizens of a certain age. Just about everyone in town from that era has a story about happening across the Jets in their mid-’80s salad days, often performing in some terri- bly unlikely place – record store, coffeeshop, hallway, even the middle of the street – channeling some far-off mojo that seemed to open portals to the past and future at the same time.
