Occupation Spotlight Consider a career as a Power Engineer To learn more about this exciting opportunity contact: Sun West DLC online program trains students Kurtis Heath for a career right out of high school Vice-Principal Sun West Distance Learning A job that matters Centre Ph: 306-252-1000 Power engineers are certified professionals who are essential to keeping E: [email protected] power plants running in hospitals, pulp mills, oil upgraders, refineries, W: www.sunwestdlc.ca manufacturing plants and countless other operations. Power engineers are often individuals with a strong mechanical aptitude who enjoy math and science. An in demand profession

Power engineers are already in demand and it is expected that demand will be increasing. Currently approximately 30,000 power engineers are employed in Canada but at current retirement rates, it is expected there will be as many as 11,000 vacancies in the next 5-10 years and only about 8,000 new power engineers to fill those positions. Train to be certified as a Power Engineer

Traditionally, individuals interested in pursuing training to become a 4th class power engineer must take programs like those offered through Saskatchewan Polytechnic after they have graduated high school. To help meet the immediate and increasing demand for power engineers, the Sun West Distance Learning Centre (DLC) in cooperation with Saskatchewan Polytechnic in , has developed a program that allows students to train to become a power engineer outside a standard classroom. This program is recognized by the Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan (TSASK) and upon completion, a student is qualified to begin employment as 4th class power engineer.

 four online high school credit courses taught by teacher who is also a 4th class power engineer and by a 3rd class power engineer with over 30 years of industry experience;  there is an exam following the completion of the first two courses and then again after the second two courses. For certification purposes, students require a mark of 65% or more on each exam. There will be a fee for both exams, which are administered by TSASK.  Certification requires 200 hours of hands-on training. The Sun West DLC program provides students with the option of while taking line classes, to participate in six hands-on week-end labs provided by a power engineer in either Outlook or Kindersley. These labs provide 80 hours of mandatory hands-on training;  an additional 120 hours of hands-on training will still be required for certification. Sun West DLC students can take the remaining hours at the Saskatchewan Polytechnic in Saskatoon where it will cost approximately $2500. This cost is significantly lower than the standard costs for hands- on training due to the 80 hours of training already provided by the Sun West DLC.

Info as shared by the Canada Education Savings Program:

Planning for a child’s post-secondary education, whether it is in an apprenticeship program, CEGEP, trade school, college or university, can open up a world of opportunities for a child.

To help save for a child’s future studies, the Government of Canada provides two education savings incentives, which are deposited into a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP).

 The Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) consists of a basic amount of 20% on the first $2,500 in annual personal contributions to an RESP (this grant is available to all eligible beneficiaries regardless of family income), as well as the additional amount of Canada Education Savings Grant, which is:

a) 10% on the first $500 of annual personal contributions for children from families with an adjusted income greater than $46,605 and up to $93,208; or, b) 20% on the first $500 of annual personal contributions for children from families with an adjusted income of $46,605 or less.

13

FROM OUR CAREER TEACHER TEAM MARCH 2019

CESG is available until the end of calendar year in which the beneficiary turns 17, and the maximum lifetime amount, including the additional amount of Canada Education Savings Grant, is $7,200.

 The Canada Learning Bond (CLB) is available for eligible children from low-income families born in 2004 or later and provides an initial payment of $500 plus $100 for each year of eligibility, up to age 15, for a maximum of $2,000. Personal contributions are not required to receive the CLB.

RESPs are the only savings vehicle that attract the federal and, where applicable, provincial education savings incentives. The money saved in an RESP is not only used to help with tuition, but can also be used to pay for housing, transportation and other education-related expenses, such as textbooks, equipment, supplies, etc., once enrolled in post-secondary education.

CWEX Employer Spotlight:

West Central Mechanical, Dodsland

In a small, rural community, many students have to travel to find meaningful work experience placements. Students from North West Central School, in Plenty, who are interested in automotive mechanics can stay close to home thanks to Allan Bacon at WCM.

Allan is a NWCS graduate himself. He has operated the business for 8 years and currently has 5 employees. If you look in the shop on an afternoon, you will most likely see more than that working, as Allan has be generously accepting students for work experience and trade specific hours.

This year, he has helped 5 students obtain 6 credits in CWEX and Mechanics, and there will be more to come. He is encouraging and flexible. He has allowed students to gain confidence in their trade and transferable skills while obtaining school credits in a non- threatening work environment. Students say they are glad to get to practice their skills and try things they have never done. “Alan is a good boss. He jokes around and has fun, but is serious about the important things.”

Thank you Allan and West Central Mechanical for supporting the learning of today’s youth.

- Submitted by Mrs. Amanda Ross, Career Development Teacher at NWCS and RCHS.
