Increased recognition of bimodal LIPs in Gondwana with significant, sometimes subequal, proportions of synchronous silicic volcanic rocks, mostly rhyolites to high silica rhyolites (±associ- ated granitoids) to mafic volcanic rocks is a major frontier, not considered in mantle plume or plate process hypotheses. On a δ18O v. initial 87Sr/86Sr plot for silicic rocks in Gondwana LIPs there is a remarkable spread between continental crust and mantle values, signifying variable contributions of crust and mantle in their origins. Caldera-forming silicic LIP events were as large as their mafic counterparts, and erupted for a longer duration (>20 myr). Several Gondwana LIPs erupted near the active continental margins, in addition to within-continents; rifting, however, continued even after LIP emplacements in several cases or was aborted and did not open into ocean by coeval com- pression. Gondwana LIPs had devastating consequences in global climate shifts and are major global sediment sources influencing upper continental crust compositions.

Luis Hot rock and ice: Volcanic chain underlies Antarctica Summary: Scientists were able to deploy ruggidized seismometers that could withstand intense cold in Antarctica only recently. A line of seismometers strung across the West Antarctic Rift Valley and the Marie Byrd Land have given geologists their first good look at the mantle beneath the ice and rocks, revealing areas of hot rock that might affect the behavior of the overlying ice sheet. The contrast between the surface and the depth is nowhere starker -- or more important -- than in Antarctica. What is causing the mysterious line of volcanoes that emerge from the ice sheet there, and what does it mean for the future of the ice? Our understanding of what's going on is really hampered because we can't see the geology, said Andrew Lloyd, main author of the study. We have to turn to geophysical methods like seismology to learn more. Lloyd helped deploy research seismometers across the West Antarctic Rift System and Marie Byrd Land in the austral summer of 2009-10. He then returned in late 2011 and snow mobiled more than 1600 km, living in a Scott tent, to recover the precious data. The recordings the instruments made of the reverberations of distant earthquakes from January 2010 to January 2012 were used to create maps of seismic velocities beneath the rift valley. An analysis of the maps was published online in the JGR: Solid Earth. This is the first time seismologists have been able to deploy instruments rugged enough to survive a winter in this part of the frozen continent, and so this is the first detailed look at Earth beneath this region.

Maar de bijzondere waarden van het gebied kunnen alleen maar tot ontwikkeling komen als er dynamiek is: dynamiek van het watersysteem, dynamiek in de aanwezigheid van vogelsoorten en zoogdieren en door vegetatiesuccessie. Alleen door die dynamiek toe te laten, ontstaan er weer dynamische evenwichten. Het Oostvaarderplassengebied is er. Het is bijzonder dat tussen de stedelijke gebieden van Almere en Lelystad en dicht bij het metropoolgebied van Amsterdam een gebied bestaat waar natuurlijke processen dominant zijn. Dat heeft een grote maatschappelijke en economische waarde. De commissie waarvan ik voorzitter mocht zijn, heeft zich vier maanden intensief met het Oostvaarderplassengebied beziggehouden.

With this aim in mind, an explorative case study was used whereof three rewilding projects were studied and compared. The qualitative data collection consisted of fifteen interviews enriched by a document analysis. Findings show that views and practices of rewilding are directly influenced by cognitive framing through the manifestation of different visions of nature (e.g. character of bond and positionality) at different levels and different mediums. The interactions between these mediums can result in cognitive tensions and have been identified as determinants to managerial practices. It led to the conclusion that there is a causal relation between visions of nature and the action repertoire of decisionmakers and managers. Moreover, the analysis of the rewilding areas revealed a fertile ground for the development of welfare biology and the adjustment of practices towards increased accountability of wild animal suffering.

Laurentia’s APW path is the most complete and forms the basis for super- position by other cratons’ APW paths to identify possible durations of those cratons’ inclusion in Rodinia, and also to generate reconstructions that are constrained both in latitude and longitude relative to Laurentia. Baltica reconstructs adjacent to the SE margin of Greenland, in a standard and geographically ‘upright’ position, between c. 1050 and 600 Ma. Australia reconstructs adja- cent to the pre-Caspian margin of Baltica, geographically ‘inverted’ such that cratonic portions of Queensland are juxtaposed with that margin via collision at c. 1100 Ma. Arctic North America reconstructs opposite to the CONgo þ Sa˜o Francisco craton at its DAmaride–Lufilian margin (the ‘ANACONDA’ fit) throughout the interval 1235–755 Ma according to palaeomag- netic poles of those ages from both cratons, and the reconstruction was probably established during the c.
