OKTOBER 2019 STORE VEGA Soulsangeren/ sangskriveren James Morrison kommer tilbage til Store VEGA med nyt album i bagagen. Da den soulfyldte sanger/ sangskriver, James Morrison, brød ind på scenen i 2006, kunne ingen have forudset at han ville bane vejen for en bølge af lignende musikere. Nu er hitlisterne domineret af sangere som Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, George Ezra og James Bay, som følger formatet som Morrison introducerede til det brede publikum: én mand med en stærk, soulfyldt stemme og én guitar. De har alle nævnt Morrison som en stor indflydelse og James Bay er citeret for at sige: “James is one of my earliest inspirations. Amongst everything that was going on in pop music, to suddenly hear a voice that delicate, that soulful and that powerful behind just an acoustic guitar was everything I'd been waiting for.” Hvis man spørger Morrison, er han ikke selv glad for at tage æren for at bane vejen. “I don’t really see it like that, I was just lucky to be one of the first”, udtaler han. På trods af James Morrisons ydmyghed var han virkelig den første til at få dette format til at fungere og successen kom nærmest henover natten. Som blot 21-ågrig strøg han ind i folks hjerter verden over, med debutalbummet ’Undiscovered’. Han blev nomineret til to Brit Awards for Best British Breakthrough Act og Best Single. Albummet solgte ikke mindre end 3 millioner eksemplarer, og kastede store hits som ’You Give Me Something’, ’Wonderful World’, ’The Pieces Don’t Fit Anymore’ og titelnummeret ’Undiscovered’ af sig. Den nu 34-årige Morrison har samlet solgt mere end 4,5 millioner eksemplarer af sine tre albummer, været på fire verdensturnéer, spillet support for Bruce Springsteen og Stevie Wonder, samt været med på Herbie Hancocks grammy-vindende album ’The Imagination Project’. På trods af den fænomenale succes har sangeren/ sangskriveren aldrig været i stand til at sætte pris på hvor godt han har klaret det. Han har haft en tendens til at blive deprimeret og om skabelsen af 2015-albummet ’Higher Than Here’ udtalte han: “Most of the time I am upbeat and positive but making [this] album has tormented me.” Nu er Morrison kommet ud på den anden side og i 2018 begyndte han arbejdet på sit nyeste album, der udkom tidligere på året som har samme titel som hans kommende tour: ’You’re Stronger Than You Know’. Albummet er hans mest ærlige samling sange indtil videre og udforsker hans forhold, familie, samt hans erfaringer med de mørke og lyse tider i livet.     JAMES MORRISON In the summer of 2000, James Morrison fronted a covers band with a repertoire of classics from the Sixties and Seventies. Playing five nights a week to packed pubs, he raked in a small fortune by the standards of any regular 16- year-old. When he later got a regular job for far less pay, he came to a realisation. “I knew straight away that I could play music, do something I enjoy and make enough money. Or I could do a job I hate and earn fuck all.” He’d barely even dreamed of making it big, but what he achieved was remarkable. His five Top 10 singles all rank among the biggest of their era, including the breakthrough smashes ‘You Give Me Something’ and ‘Wonderful World’, plus the huge Nelly Furtado collab ‘Broken Strings’. Fans were enraptured by the beauty of his once-in-a-generation voice as well as the honesty of his immediately relatable songwriting. It made for a devoted following which resulted in two chart-topping albums, 7 million record sales and a BRIT Award. He earned the respect of his own heroes, too. Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen and Elton John all invited Morrison to join them at shows. He even made a show-stealing appearance at an all-star celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of Stax Records during the 2017 Proms. “It doesn’t get much better than that!” he grins, his memory of performing with Stax legends Eddie Floyd, Booker T and Steve Cropper one that he’ll forever cherish.
