Foi uma experiência muito interessante. Seis países distribuídos pelo mundo foram conectados, em tempo real, com a Amazônia por meio de uma linha discada. Em seguida em 2002, com a parceria do Global University Systems, Fundação Rede Amazônica e Instituo Superior de Economia e Administração/Fundação Getúlio Vargas realizamos a primeira iniciativa de telemedicina da Região conectando o Brasil e os Estados Unidos para análise de uma patologia real. Depois dessa experiência iniciamos na Universidade Federal do Amazonas, mais especificamente no Centro de Ciências do Ambiente, um conjunto de ações que buscavam demostrar que as novas tecnologias eram extremamente importantes também para a conservação ambiental e melhoria da qualidade de vida dos amazônidas. Alguns poucos anos já se passaram desde essas iniciativas pioneiras. O desenvolvimento tecnológico foi muito grande. Várias novas ações relacionadas ao tema, em maior ou menor grau, foram realizadas nas universidades da Amazônia. A internet ampliou substancialmente seu raio de abrangência e muito ainda está por vir no que diz respeito à inclusão de mais pessoas no acesso e benefício desse maravilhoso invento humano. No entanto, restam ainda muitas lacunas a serem preenchidas e entendidas no que diz respeito à sua forma de utilização para fins educacionais, proteção ambiental e saúde. Nesse sentido, este livro apresenta um debate importante e necessário para uso mais eficiente das novas tecnologias de comunicação, cuja temática
