ISBN: 978-1-906109-30-1 Preface This book is an account of the founding, in 1914, of the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha‘at Islam at Lahore (then in India, now Pakistan), and covers the background, the events and the issues in relation to the creation, objectives and work of this organi- zation. It aims to show that this body was created to save the mission of propagation of Islam started by the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Movement, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, and to preserve his teachings and beliefs, in the face of the grave threat that arose within the Movement to undermine its true character. In this book, I have compiled material from existing Lahore Ahmadiyya publications, and have edited it as necessary and verified references within it by checking against the original sources. I have also added many further details by consulting the original sources directly, in particular Ahmadiyya Movement publications before and around the year 1914. Developments of much later times are also covered, particularly in chapter 7. This book is being published to mark the centenary of the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha‘at Islam Lahore. Time has vindicated its interpretation of the teachings of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad in two ways. Firstly, today that interpretation is showing the light to the Muslim world as to how to resolve its intractable problems; but that topic is beyond the scope of this book. Sec- ondly, the Lahore Ahmadiyya view of his claims and beliefs has triumphed over the erroneous standpoint of the group which be- lieves him to be a prophet and treats all other Muslims as outside the fold of Islam. As we show in chapter 7, that group has been retreating from its un-Islamic doctrines of 1914 ever since. Zahid Aziz, Dr February 2014 i Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad said: “Among the most sincere friends in our community is Maulvi Muhammad Ali, M.A. … I am sure that by the grace of God he will prove to be so firm in righteousness and love of religion that he will set an example worthy to be followed by his peers.” (1899) “I wish that such people could be produced who would do the kind of work that Maulvi Muhammad Ali sahib is doing. There is no certainty of life, and he is all alone. We cannot see anyone who can assist him or take his place.” (1905) Hazrat Maulana Nur-ud-Din declared: “[Maulvi Muhammad Ali] is a friend of mine and my arm, at whose sinceri- ty I am amazed and I envy it also.” (1909) “The people of Lahore are sincere. They love Hazrat [Mirza Ghulam Ahmad] sahib. … the works which they have performed, you should also try to do the same.” (1912) “Khwaja Kamal-ud-Din does not work out of hypocrisy. He works only for Allah. This is my belief about him. Of course, he can make mistakes. I am happy with his works. There is blessing in them. Those who spread mistrust about him are the hypocrites. … He is engaged in a good work. None of you can compete with him. … Can any of you do the work which Kamal-ud-Din is doing?” (1913) ii Contents 1. Introduction The name Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha‘at Islam means ‘The Ah- madiyya Association for the Propagation of Islam’.* The terms Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement and Jama‘at Ahmadiyya Lahore are often used to refer to it, and its members are also generally known as ‘Lahori Ahmadis’. The term Qadiani Jama‘at is often used, as in this book, to refer to the section of the Ahmadiyya Movement which remained based in Qadian, later shifting its base to Rabwah in Pakistan, and has been headed by a series of khalifas who, since 1984, live in the U.K. As to the reason for the creation of the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha‘at Islam at Lahore, Maulana Muhammad Ali has explained it in the preface to his English booklet, The Ahmadiyya Move- ment — IV: The Split, published in 1918, as follows: “…a great misconception prevails as to the true reasons of the split which is due, not to a desire

The Promised Messiah, peace be on him, has come, and has declared war- with the forces of evil. To carry on this war he has demanded from his followers moneta^ contribution and not physical fighting. His Second Khalifa (Successor) regularizeD this contribution, and fixed it to be at least, l/16th of one's mon^ly income and further enunciated that one who does not contribute at this rate, without legitimate grounds, and securing permission to pay at a lesser rate, shall not be co^idere sincere and true Ahmadis. He further declared definitely that one who fails to pay, at this rate, without any reasonable excuse, for consecutive six months, shall not be entitled to vote or be eligible for any office of the Jamat (Comm^ity). Muslim tenets appeal and go to the very heart of every sensible man here. – The Islamic Review, January 1926 In the autumn of 1912, a Punjabi Muslim lawyer from Lahore arrived in London, having travelled from his hometown with the dual purpose of pleading a civil case in England and establishing a Muslim missionary presence there. Shortly after his arrival, Khwaja Kamal-ud-Din travelled to Woking, a town 40 km southwest of London, and also the site of the first mosque built in Britain, the Shah Jahan Mosque. Built by the British-Hungarian orientalist G W Leitner, with funding from Begum Shah Jahan of Bhopal, the mosque was in a state of disuse and disrepair by then. But Kamal-ud-Din identified it as an ideal centre for the propagation of Islam within Britain and Europe, and established the Woking Muslim Mission, which administered the mosque for the next half century. In less than five months of his arrival in England, Kamal-ud-Din, a Lahori Ahmadi — from a minority school within a minority sect of Islam — had also founded the Islamic Review, which would go on to become one of the most prominent journals of Islamic thought in the West in the 20th century.

Rafeek 2012 Abstract This study seeks to explore some of the main problems contemporary British Muslims encounter from the perspective of Islamic jurisprudence. In so doing, it mainly aims to shed light on the extent Muslims in Britain face problems and what impact they might have on their religious identity as well as relationship, belonging, and contribution to the wider society. In so doing, the study will strive to examine whether existing fiqh (Isalmic jurisprudence) literature is adequate to guide contemporary fiqh scholars to deal with such issues effectively and how some contemporary answers to such issues are inappropriate. If that is the case, what would be the way forward jurists should take to find appropriate solutions? Hence, this study will use qualitative methodology to investigate such issues and questions and it will lead the study to emphasise the necessity to find answers to such problems and a mechanism to handle them, which this study would seek to suggest as a jurisprudential approach called fiqh al-aqalliyyāt al-Muslimah (Islamic Jurisprudence for Muslim Minorities) based on values, principles, universalities, and higher objectives of Islamic law: maqāsid al-Sharī‘ah (Purposes of Islamic Sharī‘ah) presented by revisiting textual sources of Islamic law as well as lived examples of early generations of Islam.

    Looking back to the Woking Muslim Mission after 100 years by Dr. Zahid Aziz Website Creator/Editor: www.wokingmuslim.org 24th September 2012 is the centenary of an event which was to place the town of Woking on the world map, in particular the map of the Muslim world. It would lead to Woking being visited for the next fifty years or more by kings, statesmen, ambassadors, generals, intellectuals, students, business men, and other leading figures from all over the Muslim world, as well as British aristocrats, scholars, linguists, writers and soldiers who had embraced Islam. Woking came to be described as “a miniature of Mecca” in the West. On that day in 1912, there arrived in England from Lahore, a city in British India, a man called Khwaja Kamal-ud-Din (1870–1932). He was by profession a lawyer and by vocation a lecturer and orator on the religion of Islam and comparative religion. He came to plead a civil case before the Privy Council in London, the highest court of appeal for Indian cases at the time. However, his plan beyond that was to present Islam in this country on public platforms and correct the very serious misconceptions about Islam and Muslims, under which the people of Britain and its religious and politi- cal leaders were labouring. He soon came to know of the existence of the mosque at Woking. It had been built in 1889 by Dr G.W. Leitner, a Euro- pean scholar and linguist who had helped in India in the establishment of the University of the Punjab.

    A Waqifaat-e-Nau said that in the UK they are thinking of restricting purdah (Hijab). My question is what can we Nasirat do about this? Huzur-e-Anwaraba said that if it is needed to show your face in public places for identity purposes then there is nothing harmful in it while your hair and chin are still covered, which is the minimum form of purdah (covering). Huzuraba said, but they are also thinking of banning Hijab or also of deporting those mothers back to their countries who have been living in UK on spouse visas since two years and do not understand the English language. At this, an eight year old girl (Ahmadi) had written to the Prime Minister saying that although my mother has a Master’s Degree in English, her accent is such that I make fun of her, so because of this, will you take my mother away from me and deport her? It was a very emotional letter and was published in the Independent and other well circulated Newspapers too. Huzur-e-Anweraba said that similarly you should write letters too. You should write that we are Muslim girls and if we chose to cover our heads or wear hijab or cover ourselves then why does it bother you? Huzuraba said that you too should write letters and a make point across that no one is forcing us to do purdah. The Religion also says that there should be sanctity and modesty in every woman. In the Holy Qur’an, where God Almighty has Commanded women to cover themselves, men have been commanded not to look at women with wide open eyes and to lower their gaze (to do purdah of their eyes).
