St. Anthony of Padua, High Ridge, MO From the Pastor’s Desk INTRODUCTION TO THE HOLY WEEK Today begins the most holy week of the Christian year. The church all over the world in silence and deep prayer begins the Journey to Jerusalem together with Jesus. The foremost character of this week is deep contemplation and silence I would say THE SACRED SILENCE. Many times this week we kneel down, bow and even prostrate in silence to understand the mysteries of the Holy Week. I earnestly request all of you to enter in to these mysteries with deep prayer, silence and contemplation. Please do make an extra effort to join together to worship as a parish family. I invite you all to join to worship on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter vigil. PALM SUNDAY We will celebrate the Palm Sunday with blessings of the palm and a small procession in to the church, which reminds us of Jesus solemn entry in to Jerusalem temple to begin his passion. The narration of the passion of Jesus will call us to focus our attention to him alone this week. Let us make our journey with Jesus carrying our own pains, disappointments and deaths with us to the Triduum. For some, the pain is personal. For others, a loved one may be suffer- ing-even dying. For others, the year has brought personal and profes- sional disappointments. Some may have experienced all sorts of deaths-from the loss of a loved one to the death of a marriage or dream. Carry all that to the Lord. It’s your passion. HOLY THURSDAY In this holy day we celebrate three important gifts from Jesus. They are the commandment of love and service, the Eucharist and gift of priesthood. Today’s mass is also called the Mass of the Lords supper. Why is this mass different from every other mass this week? The tabernacle is empty; the oils brought from the chrism mass at the cathedral will be presented; the washing of the feet; there is a procession of the Blessed Sacrament and the stripping of the altar to remind us of the passion. Please do find some time to spend in silent prayer in front of the Eucha- ristic Lord. The alter of reposition is a reminder of Gethsemane where Jesus called his disciples to pray with him. April 9, 2017 GOOD FRIDAY According to the church’s ancient tradition, the sacraments are not celebrated today or tomorrow. The altar is kept bare, without cloths, candles and flowers or cross. Today’s liturgy consists of three parts: passion readings, veneration of the cross and the communion service. We continue our Triduum, journey. Yesterday’s liturgy concluded in si- lence and today we pick up where we left off in silence. Today’s cele- bration proclaims the passion and the victory. We do not venerate solely the cross itself, but also what it means to us. HOLY SATURDAY On Holy Saturday the church waits at the Lord’s Tomb, medi- tating on his suffering and death. The Altar is left bare, the sac- rifice of the Mass is not celebrated. Only after the solemn vigil during the night, held in anticipation of the resurrection, does the Easter celebration begin, with a spirit of joy that overflows in to the following period of fifty days. EASTER VIGIL This vigil is called the mother of all vigils. The great Easter vigil has four parts: the service of light, liturgy of the word, liturgy of baptism and the liturgy of the Eucharist. This celebration overflowing with word, symbol and ceremony. I hope and pray that each and every one of us will experience a spiritual renewal and joy in this most holy time of the year. I assure you all my love and prayers in this Holy Week in every Easter Mass. Happy Easter! Dear friends, I would like to welcome all of you in a very special way to join the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Thursday 7pm and the solemn celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday at 7pm. I hope and pray you all will have a holy and prayerful holy week celebration. St. Anthony of Padua, High Ridge, MO Welcome Lenten Celebration at To all our Guests, St. Anthony of Padua Fr. • The Good Friday Office Vestments: Black I Class
The Extraordinary Form of The Roman Rite The Good Friday office Vestments: Black I Class. Feria Extract from General Decree restoring the liturgy of Holy Week: "Let the faithful be led to understand properly today's special liturgical act, in which the Passion of our Lord is solemnly chanted: prayers offered for the needs of the whole Church and the human race: the Holy Cross, monument of our Redemption, is adored most devoutly by clergy and faithful, the whole family of Christ: finally, as for hundred of years was the practice, all who wish and are duly prepared go forward to receive Communion with this as their chief intention, that by devoutly receiving the Body of the Lord (which He delivered this day for all men) they may enjoy richer fruits of that Redemption. Let the priests urge the faithful to make this sacred day one of loving recollection, neither should they forget the law of abstinence and fasting." The instruction given by Pope Pius XII stipulates that Good Friday's solemn liturgy take place after noon; the best time would be three o'clock. The same Pope revives the old practice of all receiving Communion this day as a necessary part of the liturgical function. This consists of four main divisions, each of which has its own historical interest, the whole forming a dramatic representation of the Sacred Passion. I, II. The first two parts consist of readings from Scripture and a prayer, followed by the Passion according to St. John. It is concluded by a long series of prayers for various intentions.

compiled from devout resources of the Saints' sites. www.saintsprayers.net "That we may pray unceasingly" 1 Thess. 5:17 Herein is contained a compilation of Catholic prayers, quotations, and readings from religious devotional books and the writings of and about the saints. The treasury of wisdom herein is the treasury of Christ Himself for the soul. For these prayers to be of lasting value you must adhere to the one true Church founded by Christ, the Catholic Church and her doctrine as given by Christ while living a life of grace and love God in all your doings, being always aware of your own humble nature. The quotations and readings will be of aid for the mortification of the senses, purgation, understanding of the interior life, repelling of the spiritual enemies of the soul, illumination, and finishing of the spiritual journey to salvation. An example of devotion. Practice the continual remembrance of the Lord. Begin your day with the sign of the cross, invitatory, and morning prayers such as thanksgiving for the night's protection, morning offerings, and the acts of virtue. Examine your conscience and what the day will hold ahead. Pray for these intentions, then pray during the hours of the day, with such as the powerful prayers of the Most Precious Blood for the Holy Souls. Remember the hour of noon, and the hour of three o'clock. Devote every act to Jesus Christ in between the hours. Fast according to your capacity and practice temperance throughout all your acts. At midnight rise and make a devotion.

Lovasik, S.V.D. Divine Word Missionary Previously published in 1954 IMPRIMI POTEST: Rev. Robert C. Hunter, S.V.D. Provincial, Girard, PA NIHIL OBSTAT: A.H. Wiersbinski, LL.D. Censor IMPRIMATUR: ✠ John Mark Gannon, D.D., D.C.L., LL.D. Archbishop, Bishop of Erie October 5, 1954 Editor's Foreword Written, or formulaic prayers, are an outstanding school of prayer. In following them, we learn how to pray. The Our Father is the best example, the "most perfect of prayers" (Catechism, 2773). Christ himself gave it to us, saying "Pray then like this: Our Father..." (Mt 6:9) Jesus gave us much more than a simple formula to repeat mechanically. "As in every vocal prayer, it is through the Word of God that the Holy Spirit teaches the children of God to pray to their Father." (Catechism, 2766) ● St. Paul: "...The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought...." (Rom 8:26) ● The Psalms themselves are beautiful written prayers. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, they are "the book in which The Word of God becomes man's prayer.... The Psalms both nourished and expressed the prayer of the People of God." (Catechism, 2586) And that is why we use written prayers: they nourish and express our individual prayers. This collection of prayers is a small sampling of the great treasure of written prayers from the Catholic Church's long history.
