A Business Perspective Number of Pages 45 Date 22.03.2018 Degree Bachelor of Business Administration Degree Programme International Business and Logistics Instructor(s) Michael Keaney, Senior Lecturer Rock music has great importance in the recent history of human kind, and it is interesting to understand the reasons of its de- cline, if it actually exists. Its legacy will never disappear, and it will always be a great influence for new artists but is important to find out the reasons why it has become what it is in now, and what is the expected future for the genre. This project is going to be focused on the analysis of some im- portant business aspects related with rock music and its de- cline, if exists. The collapse of Gibson guitars will be analyzed, because if rock music is in decline, then the collapse of Gibson is a good evidence of this. Also, the performance of independ- ent and major record labels through history will be analyzed to understand better the health state of the genre. The same with music festivals that today seem to be increasing their popularity at the expense of smaller types of live-music events. First Music Contact Presents IRELAND MUSIC WEEK 1st — 5th October 2019 Message from the Director Welcome to the first ever Ireland Music Week! We are now officially “the festival formerly known as Hard Working Class Heroes”. We’re excited to embrace a new identity that reflects our strategic goal: showcasing export-ready Irish talent to the best of national and international industry. The soundtrack to Ireland’s future. The Showcase Since our inception in 2003, Ireland Music Week has given a platform to some of Ireland’s best-known acts, and carved out a strong, uncompromising identity. The competition for applicants this year was the toughest it’s ever been, with nearly 500 acts vying for just 50 slots. We’re confident the 2019 line-up represents the best of the best from Ireland’s deep bench of emerging talent. Ireland Music Week is also part of Keychange, a pioneering initiative which aims to see music festival line-ups achieve a 50/50 gender balance while investing in the next generation of female artists. HWCH was the first Irish festival to sign up to Keychange, and we’re proud to continue this as Ireland Music Week. The Conference For artists and arts professionals of all levels, Ireland Music Week gives them a chance to learn and develop their craft, and create new opportunities with agents, labels, bookers, music supervisors, and services from all over the world. From workshops and panels, to master classes and speed sessions, our conference gives artists and those who support them the tools and network they need to sustain a career in music.

  • The Unfinished Revolution “The Sex Pistols
THE UNFINISHED REVOLUTION “THE SEX PISTOLS SANG ‘NO FUTURE,’ BUT THEREIS A FUTURE, AND WE’RE TRYING TO BUILD ONE.” —ALLEN RAVENSTINE, PERE UBU, 1978 BY THE SUMMER OF 1977, punk had become a parody of itself. Many of the movement’s original participants felt that something open-ended and full of possibilities had degenerated into a commercial formula. Worse, it had proved a rejuvenating shot in the arm to the established record industry that punks had hoped to overthrow. It was at this point that the fragile unity that punk had forged between working-class kids and arty middle-class bohemians began to fracture. On one side were the populist “real punks” (later to evolve into the Oi! and hardcore movements) who believed that the music needed to stay accessible and unpretentious, to continue to fill its role as the angry voice of the streets. On the other side was the vanguard that came to be known as postpunk, who saw 1977 not as a return to raw rock ’n’ roll but as a chance to make a break with tradition. The postpunk vanguard—bands such as PiL, Joy Division, Talking Heads, Throbbing Gristle, Contortions, and Scritti Politti—defined punk as an imperative to constant change. They dedicated themselves to fulfilling punk’s uncompleted musical revolution, exploring new possibilities by embracing electronics, noise, jazz and the classical avant-garde, and the production techniques of dub reggae and disco. Some accused these experimentalists of merely lapsing back into the art rock elitism that punk originally aimed to destroy. Certainly, it’s true that a high proportion of postpunk musicians had art school backgrounds.

The Independent Echo Brought to you by DAVID BOWIE 1947 - 2016 A TRUE HERO DAVID_BOWIE_IE_TRIBUTE.indd 1 19/01/2016 12:47 Dear friend of [PIAS], In January 2015, [PIAS] launched our first ever newsletter for the global independent music community. The Independent Echo is now received by more than 3,000 people across the world every month - from labels to managers, publishers, retailers, media, radio and beyond. In each monthly issue, I have had the pleasure of interviewing some of the most inspiring and successful characters working in our world. From Sire founder Seymour Stein to Mute’s Daniel Miller, Mushroom’s Michael Gudinski, Cooking Vinyl’s Martin Goldschmidt, Epitaph’s Brett Gurewitz, Fat Possum’s Matthew Johnson and many more besides, these people have all achieved a huge amount in their lives. They also have one very obvious but very important thing in common: great taste in music. The booklet you hold in your hands compiles some of these interviews, delving into the experiences, memories and motivations of some truly extraordinary individuals. Our aim with The Independent Echo is simply to celebrate the brilliance of these people (and their artists), while perhaps revealing something enlightening about their personalities. Of course, every one of them is proudly independent - just like [PIAS]. I sincerely hope you enjoy it. PUNK AS PUBLIC, PUNKS AS TEXTS: SOME OF THIS IS TRUE A Thesis Submitted to the Committee on Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Faculty of Arts and Science TRENT UNIVERSITY Peterborough, Ontario, Canada © Copyright by Janette Platana 2014 English (Public Texts) M.A. Graduate Program September 2014 ABSTRACT Punk as Public, Punks as Texts: Some Of This Is True Janette Platana This thesis is an attempt to explore the role that musical texts played in the development of a public by writing a work of fiction and then applying to it a critical exegesis. Part One, the literary text Some Of This Is True, (re-)creates and remembers punk in its iteration in Regina, Saskatchewan, in the late 1970s. Part two, the critical exegesis, examines how the theories of public formation outlined in Michael Warner’s Publics and Counterpublics can partially explain the creation and behaviour of publics, but not entirely. Similarly Mikhail Bahktin’s theory of carnival helps explain punk, but not entirely. Some gaps can be filled partly with theory borrowed from art history that reveals useful links between punk and Continental art movements; Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopia fills other gaps. Literature fills the rest. Keywords: Publics, Counterpublics, Punk, Carnival, Heterotopia, Creative Writing, Punk Girls, Punk Women ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the assistance of Professor Hugh Hodges for his humour and goodwill, erudition and creativity, which first allowed and then helped form this two-fold artistic and academic project in such a way that neither component was sacrificed to the other.

PUNK London: 40 years of subversive culture is a program of exhibitions, lectures and events around punk, backed by some of London’s leading cultural organisations. To celebrate this, McQ spoke to Sheila Rock, Don Letts and Pam Hogg, who all contributed to punk’s movement in London and abroad. Jeannette Lee, Sheila Rock and Don Letts Sheila Rock is a photographer known for her large archive of punk photographs from the 70s and 80s. Her latest exhibition at the CHELSEA Space, ‘From Punk to the English Sea’ (28th September – 28th October), showcases a series of new and archive portraits, featuring the female punk icon Jordan (Pamela Rooke), who played a key role in London’s punk movement. She was the muse for artists such as Derek Jarman and became well known for her association with Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren’s SEX – a boutique on the famous King’s Road. Rock hadn’t seen Jordan since the late 70s and they met for the first time in forty years for the exhibition. New portraits of Jordan were also commissioned to mark the occasion. In 2013, FirstThirdBooks published PUNK+, a document of London’s 70s punk scene featuring works by Rock. Exhibitions followed in London, Berlin and Paris and in 2014 the project embarked on a global tour to Tokyo, Shanghai, Singapore and Hong Kong. Photographer Sheila Rock moved from the United States to London in the 1970s.
