A NNUAL R EPORT 2003 Americas Society Americas Council of the Americas Council Dear Friends: I am delighted to report that the Council of the Americas and the Americas Society took unprecedented steps in 2003 to renew and reinvigorate our commitment to our mission and our members. Last August, Susan Segal was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer. Susan had been a member of the Board of Directors for eight years when I charged her with the task of chairing a Strategic Planning Committee. The plan was enthusiastically endorsed by our Board. Thus, it made sense to appoint her to implement it. At a time of profound change in the Americas, Susan has the energy and the vision to assure that the organization continues to play a leading role in affecting the central concerns of the region. Since the latter half of 2003, we have taken significant steps to execute our new strategic plan. Our first priority was to assemble a first-class senior management team open to new ideas and committed to an efficiently run organization capable of top-tier execution. Under this team’s leadership, the Council of the Americas and the Americas Society have made significant strides in accomplishing our mission of being the preeminent U.S.-based not-for-profit organization solely committed to addressing current foreign policy, trade, economic, political, and cultural issues of the Western Hemisphere. We are very excited about our direction and remain steadfast in our desire to exercise significant influence on hemispheric policy on behalf of our members and in support of our core values, which include democracy, the rule of law, and free trade. -

Roots radical – Place, power and practice in punk entrepreneurship Sarah Louise Drakopoulou Dodd The significance continues to grow of scholarship that embraces critical and contextualized entrepreneurship, seeking rich explorations of diverse entrepreneurship contexts. Following these influences, this study explores the potentialized context of punk entrepreneurship. The Punk Rock band Rancid has a 20-year history of successfully creating independent musical and related creative enterprises from the margins of the music industry. The study draws on artefacts, interviews and videos created by and around Rancid to identify and analyse this example of marginal, alternative entrepreneurship. A three-part analytic frame was applied to analysing these artefacts. Place is critical to Rancid’s enterprise, grounding the band socially, culturally, geographically and politically. Practice also plays an important role with Rancid’s activities encompassing labour, making music, movement and human interactions. The third, and most prevalent, dimension of alterity is that of power which includes data related to dominance, subordination, exclusion, control and liberation. Rancid’s entrepreneurial story is depicted as cycles, not just a linear journey, but following more complicated paths – from periphery to centre, and back again; returning to roots, whilst trying to move forwards too; grounded in tradition but also radically focused on dramatic change. Paradox, hybridized practices, and the significance of marginal place as a rich resource also emerged from the study. Abstract There is a dark mythology surrounding the post-punk band Joy Division that tends to foreground the personal history of lead singer Ian Curtis. However, when evaluating the construction of Joy Division’s public image, the contributions of several other important figures must be addressed. This thesis shifts focus onto the peripheral figures who played key roles in the construction and perpetuation of Joy Division’s image. The roles of graphic designer Peter Saville, of television presenter and Factory Records founder Tony Wilson, and of photographers Kevin Cummins and Anton Corbijn will stand as examples in this discussion of cultural intermediaries and collaborators in popular music. -
