Hugh Wyld Actor Hugh Wyld Actor Hugh Wyld is a performer, theatre-maker and director. Hugh studied at Cambridge University, before training at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Hugh’s acting credits include: Define Gender/Victoria Sin (Nowness Productions), Chubby Funny (Free Range Films), The Winslow Boy (Rose Theatre), The Life of Chekhov (BBC Radio), Titus Andronicus (The Globe Theatre), Pillars of the Community (National Theatre) and Billy Elliot the Musical (Victoria Palace Theatre). Hugh performs as Shirley Du-Naughty in 5 member drag girl band ‘Denim’, sponsored by MAC Cosmetics and Bumble Style. Denim performed a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Underbelly), where they received 5* from The Scotsman, before transferring to The Soho Theatre, gaining a 4* review from The Guardian. Denim have also performed at the Arts Theatre, Trafalgar Studios, the Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club and Port Eliot Festival, as well as doing a secret gig with Florence and the Machine at Glastonbury Festival. Hugh also devises and performs as part of a new theatre ensemble Tacky Pioneer, a graduate company from the Advanced Theatre Practice MA course at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. He is the artistic director of HIV Voices, a creative writing and performance project that works in association with London's largest HIV charity - Positive East. HIV Voices has been performed at a range of venues including The Lost Theatre, Kings Head, Tristan Bates and Pleasance Theatre. Watch scenes from TRIGONOMETRY here.     The Craig Lecture 2010: Design in the fourth dimension Central School of Speech & Drama’s Craig Lecture, now in its second year, is given in honour of leading 20 th Century Modernist Edward Gordon Craig, author of The Art of Theatre , and director of Stanislavski’s epoch- defining production of Hamlet . This year’s speaker, Christopher Oram, explores what technology and interactivity can bring to theatre, and how theatre, not film, should be leading the way. This event took place at Central School of Speech & Drama on 5 July 2010, and was presented in association with the Society for Theatre Research. About Christopher Oram Oram began his career straight from West Sussex College of Art and Design, apprenticing for stage designer Paul Farnsworth at the Chichester Festival Theatre. From there he went on to assist designers Anthony Ward and Ian McNeil. Although he’s worked with most of our A list directors – including Trevor Nunn, Sam Mendes, Stephen Daldry, and Adrian Noble – he is best known for his long- term collaboration with his partner Michael Grandage. Since meeting on a production of The Last Yankee in 1995 (Grandage’s directorial debut), they have worked on numerous high profile productions, first at Sheffield – including As You Like It , (2000), Edward II (2001), Richard Iii (2002), The Tempest (2002), Suddenly Last Summer (2004) – and latterly at the Donmar (where Grandage is Artistic Director) – The Vortex (2002), Caligula (2003), Don Juan in Soho (2006), Frost/Nixon (2006), Othello (2008), and Red (2009). Other work includes West End musicals, as well as the costumes for Kenneth Branagh’s film of The Magic Flute and the opera Billy Budd at Glyndebourne Oram’s work has gained him several prestigious theatre awards: an Olivier in 2004 for Power ; A Critics' Circle Award (2004) for Suddenly Last Summer ; and an Evening Standard award (2003) for Caligula ; this year he has won the Backstage Garland award for Scenic Design for Parade and a Critic's Circle Award and a Tony for Red .

He has written Alan Ayckbourn (1984), One Night Stands (1994), and The Life and Work of Harold Pinter (2001), and edited Stage and Screen Lives (2002). He is currently working on a survey of post-war British theatre from 1945 to the present to be published by Faber and Faber. In June 2003, Billington was voted Britain’s “most trustworthy” critic on the theatre website www.whatsonstage.com. The interview that follows was conducted in London on 30 June 2003. What do you think were the causes of the renaissance in new writing for the stage in the early 1990s? Why did it happen precisely then? One of the reasons was a clear reaction against the moral values of the 1980s. The writers who emerged in the 1990s had grown up in England in the 1980s, the period of Thatcherism, materialism, and the belief that profit was the ultimate test of anything’s worth. So we have a whole generation who were brought up in that philosophy, and who mightily repudiated it when they came into their twenties and started writing about it. We see this in the work of Mark Ravenhill very specifically, and to some extent in Sarah Kane, Patrick Marber, and Joe Penhall too. They are very different writers, but they all share a dislike of 1980s materialism.
