ISBN 978-91-7264-478-6 ISSN 1104-2508 ABSTRACT Scandinavian countries are usually assumed to be less disposed than other countries to involve associations as welfare producers. They are assumed to be so disinclined due to their strong statutory welfare involvement, which “crowds-out” associational welfare production; their ethnic, cultural and religious homogeneity, which leads to a lack of minority interests in associational welfare production; and to their strong working-class organisations, which are supposed to prefer statutory welfare solutions. These assumptions are questioned here, because they cannot account for salient associational welfare production in the welfare areas of housing and child-care in two Scandinavian countries, Sweden and Norway. In order to approach an explanation for the phenomena of associational welfare production in Sweden and Norway, some refinements of current theories are suggested. First, it is argued that welfare associations usually depend on statutory support in order to produce welfare on a salient level. Second, it is supposed that any form of particularistic interest in welfare production, not only ethnic, cultural or religious minority interests, can lead to associational welfare. With respect to these assumptions, this thesis supposes that political parties are organisations that, on one hand, influence statutory decisions regarding associational welfare production, and, on the other hand, pursue particularistic interests in associational welfare production. -

Ler História | 72 | 2018 | pp. 151-173 SHIRT MOVEMENTS IN INTERWAR EUROPE: A TOTALITARIAN FASHION Juan Francisco Fuentes 151 Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain [email protected] The article deals with a typical phenomenon of the interwar period: the proliferation of socio-political movements expressing their “mood” and identity via a paramilitary uniform mainly composed of a coloured shirt. The analysis of 34 European shirt movements reveals some common features in terms of colour, ideology and chronology. Most of them were consistent with the logic and imagery of interwar totalitarianisms, which emerged as an alleged alternative to the decaying bourgeois society and its main political creation: the Parliamentary system. Unlike liBeral pluralism and its institutional expression, shirt move- ments embody the idea of a homogeneous community, based on a racial, social or cultural identity, and defend the streets, not the Ballot Boxes, as a new source of legitimacy. They perfectly mirror the overwhelming presence of the “brutalization of politics” (Mosse) and “senso-propaganda” (Chakhotin) in interwar Europe. The ability of the body and clothing to sublimate, to conceal or to express the intentions of a political actor was by no means a discovery of interwar totalitarianisms. Antoine de Baecque studied the political dimension of the body as metaphor in eighteenth-century France, paying special attention to the three specific func- tions that it played in the transition from the Ancien Régime to revolutionary France: embodying the state, narrating history and peopling ceremonies. -

Examining an author’s life can inform and expand the reader’s understanding of a novel. Biographical criticism is the practice of analyzing a literary work through the lens of an author’s experience. In this lesson, explore the author’s life to understand the novel more fully. 1 Ernest Hemingway grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, one of six children. In Lesson One 1917, the year President Wilson declared war on Germany, Hemingway graduated from high school. Instead of going to college, he became a FOCUS: reporter for a small newspaper. As a journalist, Hemingway learned to write concisely, using active verbs and brief, clear paragraphs. Many young Biography men were entering the military, but Hemingway’s vision did not meet military standards. Instead, he applied to the Red Cross as an ambulance driver and, in 1918, found himself in France and then in Italy. A Farewell to Arms, published in 1929, draws on the details of his wartime injury, his friendships, and his love affairs. ?? Discussion Activities Listen to The Big Read Audio Guide. Students should take notes as they listen. Ask them to present the three most important points they learned from the Audio Guide. Distribute Reader’s Guide essays, “Introduction to the Novel,” “Ernest Hemingway, 1899- 1961,” and “Hemingway and World War I.” Divide the class into groups. Assign one essay to each group. After reading and discussing the essays, groups will present what they have learned to the class. Ask students to add creative twists to make their presentations memorable. ?? They also indicate which party family is leading in the national polls. • Parties belonging to the EPP family are (in national polls) the strongest political family in 12 (-1 compared with the last barometer) countries . The Socialist family is leading in 6 (+1), the Liberal family in 4 (+1) countries,the Eurosceptic Conservatives in 2 (-2), parties affiliated to the Green/EFA-Group in 1 (+1) country. In France and Latvia, unaffiliated movements /parties are stronger than any party family, in Italy the far-right is the strongest political family. • If one looks only at the political colour of the strongest political force (and not the entire party family), an EPP party is leading in 10 countries, the Socialists in 8, the ALDE in 4, the ECR in 3 each, Greens, independents and right-wing populists in one each • In many countries, the advantage of the leading political family in the opinion polls is very slim (France, Spain, Slovakia, Finland, Belgium, Lithuania). • The EPP familiy enjoys a relatively strong support in the opinion polls (above 30%) in Germany, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Austria, Croatia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Portugal, Greece, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus • In the European Council, 9 (+1) Heads of State and Government belong to the EPP family, 8 to the Liberals, 5 to the Socialists/Social Democrats, 2 to the Eurosceptic Conservatives, one to the European Left. -

Learn for the sake of acquiring knowledge.” Much of what you do in class over the next few years will inevitably be focused on external examinations. But we all know there is much, much more to your education than just doing as well as you can in exams. True education goes on throughout your life in many different ways and places. Your teachers will often be able to take you way outside the exam syllabus but we want you to be able to find areas of academic interest that mean a lot to you personally and are not always restricted to the subjects you have chosen to study. This booklet is to help you think about areas that may spark off individual interests for you. They may cross subject boundaries and may help you develop areas of specialisms that you will be able to follow throughout your life, either as a professional interest or as an absorbing hobby. Take some time to read through subjects you may think you are not very interested in as well as those you are. Just because you have not chosen to follow a subject to GCSE or A Level does not mean that there will not be aspects of the subject that could absolutely fascinate you. We want you to find endless stimulation and challenge in intellectual areas. That has nothing to do with examination but everything to do with a full life. -
