2018 ANNUAL REPORT Charitable Registration Number: 118828631 RR0001 2019 BOARD OF GOVERNORS MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO Bob Rooney, Chair Susan Anderson In June 2018, I began my role here as President and Chief Executive Officer and, in the last 12 months, Geoff Beattie we have made good on our promise that the future of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame (CSHoF) will look Sylvie Bigras very different from its recent past. Our goal was to enhance the visits of the many that come to see the Michelle Cameron-Coulter museum in person and extend our reach to the millions across Canada who cannot. On a very practical level, that Trevor Haynes means raising the profile of our sports champions as advocates for Canada’s shared values: respect, Blake Hutcheson equality, fairness and openness. We are recognizing and creating awareness for our Hall of Famers as Kerrin Lee-Gartner they go beyond the win and convert their success in competitive sport to community spirit. We believe Scott Moore each Hall of Famer represents much more than a singular athletic achievement. They have become Brad Robertson treasured, iconic citizens of the Canadian community, each celebrated because of his or her contribution Mark Smith to the country’s narrative. The issues these Hall of Famers subscribe to and advocate for are important for the health and well-being of our country as a whole. This is the reward for all Canadians. 2019 HALL OF FAMER SELECTION COMMITTEE Going forward, we will continue to extend our reach and create awareness through our Beyond Dr. Bruce Kidd, Chair the Win - Hall of Famers on Tour education program as we roll it out nationally, and through our Dr. Carly Adams in-house education initiatives. We will build upon our unique specialty of curating sports history through Sylvie Beliveau travelling and pop-up exhibits for corporations and events. We will continue to build our Thought Michelle Cameron-Coulter Leadership opportunities via podcasts and our Who’s In The Hall monthly speaker series. Lastly, we will Dr. Guylaine Demers do what we have done so well for the past 64 years; recognition. Recognizing and sharing the stories of Stephanie Dixon these Hall of Famers as they step off the podium and out into their communities, rewarding our country Lori Ewing as they Build Canada through Sport. Stay tuned for Gord Miller two new, very exciting initiatives that will roll out in the Fall 2019 and will be presented at our 64th Scott Moore Annual Induction Festival in Toronto on October 23, 2019. Education and Programming Manager Siobhan Kelly, Visitor Services and Volunteer Coordinator Bala Bhaskar, Marketing Administrator 1 INDUCTION GALA 615 Induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame is the highest level of sports recognition ATTENDEES in Canada. Each year, a class of Canadians who have achieved the highest level of accomplishment in their sport and who have the purpose and passion to promote Canada’s shared values beyond their sport successes are officially inducted. The $265,971 Gala, hosted on October 18, 2018, was an extremely successful event and raised RAISED a total of $265,971, with proceeds directed to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame education programs, including our in-house and distance learning programs. INSPIRE CANADA MUSEUM GALA 170 GUESTS On June 14, 2018, we hosted the Inspire Canada Museum Gala with Honourary Co-Chairs Heather Culbert and Hall of Famer, Cassie Campbell-Pascall. The Gala raised a total of $121,952, with proceeds directed to Canada’s Sports Hall of $121,952 Fame’s youth education programming and the development of the Women in RAISED Sport Gallery. EDUCATION PROGRAMS EXHIBITS AND COLLECTIONS Olympic and Paralympic Moments program was created to accompany the new PyeongChang 2018: United in Spirit features five Olympic and four Paralympic PyeongChang 2018: United in Spirit exhibit. athletes; Marie-Philip Poulin, Spencer O’Brien, Greg Westlake, Michelle Salt, Jesse Cockney, Alana Ramsay, Taylor Henrich, Mac Marcoux, and Samuel Edney. The 30th anniversary of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary was also featured noting the lasting legacy the Olympic Winter Games left locally in Calgary as well as across the world and the Olympic movement. Virtual Visits offer students across Canada the chance to experience the inspiring stories of Hall of Famers with two program options, Sports and the Canadian Identity and Sports and the Canadian Champions. Through video, images, virtual gallery tours, and interactive storytelling, these programs allow students to engage and learn from stories of great Canadian athletes. The Locker Room exhibit features the Class of 2018 Inductees: Jeff Adams (Wheelchair Athletics), Damon Allen (Football), Mary Baker (Baseball), Chandra Crawford (Cross Country Skiing), Alexandre Despatie (Diving), David Keon (Ice Hockey), Dr. Sandra Kirby (Builder), and Wilton Littlechild (Builder). We received a very rare artefact into the collection; Shuss is considered the very first Olympic Games mascot, from the 1968 Olympic Winter Games in Grenoble. A Lacrosse exhibit opened featuring all of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame’s lacrosse Hall of Famers. Ninety Grade 4 students from Hawkwood Elementary School took part in a free physical literacy event with the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, the Honourable Lois E. Mitchell on April 19, 2018. Her Honour led a discussion of the importance of sports for youth, offering an animated and engaging learning experience. On November 28 and 29, a Resiliency Summit was held at WinSport, coordinated by Ever Active Schools, which was a two-day gathering of Indigenous youth, educators and Play Hard, Fight Hard: Sport and the community members for the purpose of sharing activities, Canadian Military 3D exhibit began its five-year tour. The first two destinations celebrating stories and practices regarding health, wellness, were the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and and resilience. Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame collaborated the Aurora Museum and Archives. on the Summit’s wellness break activities which led to the development of a new high school Aboriginal program delivered to 170 Indigenous participants from across Canada. 3 SOCIAL MEDIA & WEB STATS We saw a significant boost in our following on each platform at the beginning of 2018 when we launched our Girls in Sport videos nationally. The exhibit features how the role of women in sport has changed over generations in Canada and showcases the amazing contributions of 50 of Canada’s elite female athletes and sport builders who have been inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame including Cassie Campbell-Pascall, Chandra Crawford, Senator Nancy Greene Raine, and Senator Chantal Petitclerc. Beyond the Win: Hall of Famers on Tour is an assembly-style, curriculum-aligned education presentation that introduces students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 to an accomplished sport champion, individuals who go beyond his or her greatest sporting accomplishments to return value to the community. This outreach program officially launched in May 2019 and reached over 3,300 students in the first month. Hall of Famers who presented to students include Catriona Le May Doan, Danielle Goyette, Waneek Horn-Miller, Dr. Sandra Kirby, Cindy Klassen and Lori-Ann Muenzer.
