Fantasy Genre

DEFINITION: “A fantasy is a story of magic, which usually begins realistically, but turns into an adventure which is strange, astonishing and dreamlike.”

** Think about the movie and book, The Wizard of Oz. The story starts out real (everything could happen in real life), then once Dorothy wakes up, lands in OZ opens her front door, it’s now in color… The viewer now knows that the story has just become a fantasy with many of the characteristics below.

Introduce the fantasy genre. Below are the characteristics that makes a story a “fantasy”.

It may be of another world.

It may change the size of people.

Toys might talk.

Animals might talk.

Time periods may change from one place to another.

Characters may be involved in unusual situations.

People may have amazing and unusual powers.

There may be a “quest” or a journey.

The author creates a new world.

There is usually a special “theme” or guideline used such as “good against evil,” “love vs. hate,” etc…

“Symbols” are used a great deal. There are various things used in a story that represent or stand for something else. They usually have a different meaning.

A fantasy can utilize ALL of the characteristics in a chapter book such as The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe or only one characteristic such as animals being the main character and talking such as the “froggy” books by Jonathan London.

Check out some other fantasy book titles using Destiny. Type in fantasy fiction in the search book. Click on the subject box. See what some of the results are.
