Salzburg Over shadowed by one of the largest castles in Europe, the Hohensalzburg Fortress, Salzburg is renowned as the birthplace of Mozart and for having one of the best preserved city centres in the world. The old part of the city was made a UNESCO site in 1997 and is a wonderful place to wander and immerse yourself in the striking examples of baroque architecture. Other architectural highlights are the Mirabell Palace and Gardens where scenes from the Sound of Music were filmed and the Wasserspiele Hellbrunn, an Archbishop’s Palace and water garden that is a fine place to spend a warm summer’s day. St Peters Abbey has been providing sanctuary for the Benedictine monks for over 1000 years. Redesigned in 1756 to incorporate an ‘onion dome’ the interior was lavishly painted and decorated in the Rococo style in the following years. If you feel like escaping the city for the day, take the cable car up the Untersburg mountain to be rewarded with far reaching views across the alpine landscape. Alternatively, walk to the top and treat yourself in the restaurant at the top. • History of Schloss Leopoldskron
SALZBURG SEMINAR SCHLOSS LEOPOLDSKRON HISTORY OF SCHLOSS LEOPOLDSKRON Schloss Leopoldskron was commissioned as a family estate in 1736 by the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, Leopold Anton Freiherr von Firmian (1679-1744), a member of a Tyrolean noble family whose lineage can be traced back to 1185. The Scottish Benedictine monk Bernhard Stuart is regarded as Leopoldskrons master builder. The stucco work on the ceilings done by Johann Kleber are described as “the best example of rococo stucco the land can offer”. Leopold Firmian was a great lover of science and the arts, but is most remembered for his role in the expulsion of more than 22,000 Protestants from the Archbishopric of Salzburg. Leopold’s harsh actions were noticed all over Europe and both Salzburg’s economy and the reputation of the Firmian family suffered severely as a result. The commission of Schloss Leopoldskron was, in part, an attempt by the Archbishop to rescue the social standing of his family. Schloss Leopoldskron and Lake, A special law made the property an inalienable Watercolor, pen and ink drawing, possession of the family. In May 1744, Leopold Late 19th Century. deeded the completed Schloss over to his nephew, Count Laktanz Firmian. After his death later in the same year, the Archbishop’s body was buried in Salzburg’s cathedral, but his heart remains below the Chapel of the Schloss, which, as is inscribed on the chapel floor, he “loved so dearly.” Count Laktanz, a collector of art and an artist himself, enriched Schloss Leopoldskron with the largest collection of paintings Salzburg had ever known, including works of artists such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Dürer, and Titian.

  • Schloss Leopoldskron and the Meierhof Now Reopened As a Hotel
Birthplace of the Salzburg Festival and an exclusive address for travelers to Salzburg For everyone and “Everyman”: Schloss Leopoldskron and the Meierhof now reopened as a hotel This majestic rococo palace dating back to the 18th century is generally held to be the birthplace of the Salzburg Festival, though it gained true world fame as a shooting location for “The Sound of Music”, and has always been a real magnet for artists and thinkers from around the globe. Under its new name “Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron”, effective immediately this estate now offers 55 stylishly renovated rooms in the “Meierhof” as well as 12 spacious, historical suites in the palace itself. After a slow process spanning many years aimed at providing access to this estate for guests, the palace and its Meierhof have now opened their doors as a hotel. General Manager Daniel Szelényi, who comes from Munich and joined Schloss Leopoldskron last summer, has made it possible for Salzburg visitors to experience this unique historical site from this point on: “The entire palace is once again inhabitable, as a guest you can enjoy it as if it were your own home. You can even make yourself comfortable in the former office of Max Reinhardt”, raves Szelényi. “The quiet location on the banks of the Leopoldskroner Weiher, with view of the mighty Untersberg Massif and Hohensalzburg Fortress, makes this inspiring place almost magical.” This process goes hand in hand with a restructuring of the entire organization: Service has been refined and a stronger focus has been placed on the guest experience as a whole.

The Kehlsteinhaus – Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest * * * An exposé on the successful engineering feats of a remarkable building program that battled against time, snow, and rugged terrain. COA 4010 History of Building Construction George Doyle May 5, 2016 Sitting atop the Bavarian Alps of Berchtesgaden at 6017 feet, the construction of the Kehlsteinhaus commenced in April of 1937. Hitler’s private secretary, Martin Bormann, initiated the massive building program aimed to be complete for Hitler’s 50th birthday celebration on April 20, 1939. Successfully overcoming the time constraint and intense weather conditions, Bormann and his crew of around 3,000 men completed the construction project of Hitler’s Kehlsteinhaus in only 13 months. The project was led under a multitude of inspectors, engineers, and military leaders in addition to the project visionary, Martin Bormann. General Inspector for German road maintenance Dr. Ing. Fritz Todt worked alongside Bormann starting in 1937, where an initial phase of material transportation was made possible through an extensive roadway system up the Kehlstein Mountain. Complex systems of cables, pulleys, and hoists were designed and implemented under Todt and Bormann’s laborers. These mechanisms were created on-site to transport stone and other materials both on and off steeper portions of the mountainside throughout multi-lateral construction phases. Bormann’s laborers, mostly consisting of Italian stonemasons, who used the simplest of tools to work the stones for this project. Obsessed with the project representing the Third Reich, Bormann considered this site as the symbolic beginning of a new era in the field of construction (Fabritius, 10).

The spatial distribution of fluvial and limnic sediments data provided new insights into the evolution of these conflu- ences expanding into the Salzburg Basin, Bad Reichenhall and Piding basins after the Last Glacial Maximum._________________ The two rivers deposited their coarse sediments in the basin, producing delta fans that subsequently progressed towards the basin center, leaving behind beds of coarse-grained sediments in the otherwise fine-grained lake deposits. Short-term events, such as the melting of glaciers and landslides, played an important role in the sedimentary evolution of the Salzburg Basin._________________ The area at the Saalach confluence shows a basement high at the Walserberg. The basement high separates two basins: the up- per, proximal Bad Reichenhall Basin and the lower, distal Salzburg Basin. The deposits in the upper basin reflect a large delta fan that developed in postglacial times, in combination with a braided-river system on top of the fan.
