JUDGING THE NEWFOUNDLAND Thanks to Barbara Bottaro, Ernest Hart, and Marcia Schlehr, for their art work The following excerpts from the standard work “This is the Newfoundland” were written by the late Mr. and Mrs. Major B. Godsol. “Remember that type, balance, and general appearance are of the utmost importance. As a breeder, shun those faults that are hard to breed out. As a judge, remember that any dog can gait soundly, but no matter how well he moves, unless he looks like a Newfoundland, he is not typical of the breed. Type is the embodiment of a Standard’s essentials. This Guide was authored by the Judges’ Education Committee “It does not matter whether you are an official in the ring, an interested spectator, or of the Newfoundland Club of America, Inc. just appraising dogs in your own kennel, judging dogs is an art based on observation. One can read a Standard and quote it verbatim, but that does not Approved by the Board of Directors, enable one to have the proper mental picture of an ideal Newfoundland. Newfoundland Club of America November, 1999 “To appraise dogs correctly, one must possess the basic principles that underlie all good judging: 1. A clearly defined ideal in mind. 2. Power of accurate observation. 3. Sound judgment, which includes the ability to make a logical analysis and to evaluate the good and poor qualities in terms of a sound breeding program. “Remember, no dog is perfect. He can score well on individual points and still not be balanced.

  • 2019 Horrible Hundred
The Horrible Hundred 2019 A sampling of problem puppy mills and puppy sellers in the United States For the seventh year in a row, the Humane Society of the United States is publishing a list of 100 problem puppy mills and dog sellers. The 2019 Horrible Hundred is a list of problem dealers in the United States that the HSUS is aware of, published annually to warn consumers about common problems at puppy mills, and to urge government oversight agencies, such as the United States Department of Agriculture, to live up to their enforcement obligations. It is not a list of the worst operations, because many puppy mills are not inspected at all and thus operate in secrecy. Since our last report was published in May 2018, some of the dealers listed in that report appear to have closed their doors, including the notorious Laughlin Kennel (Robert Fink) in Massachusetts, Georgia Puppies (Craig Gray aka Reason Gray) in Georgia, and Samples Creek Kennel (Pam Baldwin) in Missouri. A few other Missouri dealers, including Pup 4 U, aka Cedercrest Kennel (Marilyn Shepherd aka Above: State inspectors found filthy conditions and an emaciated Marilyn Williams), have been penalized by the Great Dane at D and S Puppies in Cumby, Texas. The operation state, but appear to still be operating as of the markets its puppies on Facebook and at flea markets. /TX Dept of Agriculture, 2018 time of this report. Missouri has a history of allowing problem kennels to continue to operate on a smaller scale even after they have been penalized and downsized.

  • The Illustrated Guide for the Newfoundland Dog in Canada
The Illustrated Guide for the Newfoundland Dog in Canada Approved by The Newfoundland Dog Club of Canada Inc. February 2020 The Newfoundland Dog Club of Canada (NDCC) The Canadian Standard of the Newfoundland – Boxed Bold Type NDCC Interpretive Guidelines -- Italics Type Judging The Newfoundland To be a competent judge, one must not only know the Standard, but must also have a clear mental picture of the ideal Newfoundland. The Standard can be likened to a law to be enforced by breeders and judges. The first impression one should get upon meeting a Newfoundland is that of a very large, friendly, gentle but strong, athletic dog. That which contributes to the dog fulfilling its purpose is a virtue; that which interferes with the dog doing its job is a fault, although absence of faults is no guarantee of quality. Correct type, soundness, temperament, expression and style in balance, equal quality. Type is that which makes a breed itself and not something else. True type, because it is functional, is balanced with no part exaggerated. Soundness allows for the performance of function. Soundness includes correctness in temperament and conformation as well as in movement. Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of the Newfoundland. Without this most important characteristic, there can be no Newfoundland. The Newfoundland's temperament is reflected in his soft, dignified and intelligent expression. Style is a manner of conduct or action, elegance, something that draws the eye. It doesn't change type, but adds to it, like icing on a cake. Good animals of a breed need to be of a like type, but there is still room for variations within that correct type.
