I want to thank everyone for all their efforts during 2019 to make River King the club that it is. All of your time, effort and donations are greatly appreciated and does not go unnoticed. The Board met in early December setting forth our schedule for 2020 and forming our committees. If you would like to participate on any committee, please contact either the committee chair listed on the website or a board member, Volunteers are always welcome and appreciated. President: • Cassie IKen-thanKed everyone in attendance, • ThanKs to Pat and Bob Owens for use of the building, • ThanKs to Carin HicKs for providing the main dish today, it was delicious. • Cassie IKen also announced the following temporary changes to the board: • Sue Zientara will temporarily step in fulfilling vice presidential duties • Jenny Harrison will temporarily step in fulfilling recording secretary duties. • These moves were approved by Jean McAdams and Janice Henderson. • Cassie IKen then asKed if anyone had issues with this move and none were voiced. Don’t wait till last minute Conformation: Sue Zientara will be chair for this committee with the guidance of Jean McAdams 6 River King Newfoundland Club General Meeting Minutes Nov 17, 2019 Cont’d: Draft: Cassie Iken, Sue Zientara, Sylvia Steiling. • The judges are set. • Test dates are March 21/22 • Question was brought up whether to rent the building or not. It was decided because of the unpredictability of the weather, and the ability to hold a brown bag raffle that we should utilize the building. • Draft and go will be March 7/8 we will not be using the building for that weeKend Education: • It was suggested that someone would be temporarily needed to chair this committee- no decision made. • Pat Owens suggested another noseworK seminar. • Jenny Harrison suggested another grooming seminar. Fundraising: Jennifer Jones • There will only be 1-day raffle at draft test. • Dates for the Christmas tree pulls are EcKerts in Belleville 10 am-2pm o. Nov 30 and Mills apple farm in Marine 10am to 2 pm on Dec 7. Please try to attend whether you draft or not. • EcKerts will be a long pull for the dogs and also just need dogs to interact with the people. • All donations raised will be going to the Rescue fund. Starting in January 2019 with the rescue of The Central Illinois Eight Dogs from Roanoke, Illinois and then in July getting a call again from the same producer that he had another five dogs to relinquish.

    The Horrible Hundred 2019 A sampling of problem puppy mills and puppy sellers in the United States For the seventh year in a row, the Humane Society of the United States is publishing a list of 100 problem puppy mills and dog sellers. The 2019 Horrible Hundred is a list of problem dealers in the United States that the HSUS is aware of, published annually to warn consumers about common problems at puppy mills, and to urge government oversight agencies, such as the United States Department of Agriculture, to live up to their enforcement obligations. It is not a list of the worst operations, because many puppy mills are not inspected at all and thus operate in secrecy. Since our last report was published in May 2018, some of the dealers listed in that report appear to have closed their doors, including the notorious Laughlin Kennel (Robert Fink) in Massachusetts, Georgia Puppies (Craig Gray aka Reason Gray) in Georgia, and Samples Creek Kennel (Pam Baldwin) in Missouri. A few other Missouri dealers, including Pup 4 U, aka Cedercrest Kennel (Marilyn Shepherd aka Above: State inspectors found filthy conditions and an emaciated Marilyn Williams), have been penalized by the Great Dane at D and S Puppies in Cumby, Texas. The Standard can be likened to a law to be enforced by breeders and judges. The first impression one should get upon meeting a Newfoundland is that of a very large, friendly, gentle but strong, athletic dog. That which contributes to the dog fulfilling its purpose is a virtue; that which interferes with the dog doing its job is a fault, although absence of faults is no guarantee of quality. Correct type, soundness, temperament, expression and style in balance, equal quality. Type is that which makes a breed itself and not something else. True type, because it is functional, is balanced with no part exaggerated. Soundness allows for the performance of function. Soundness includes correctness in temperament and conformation as well as in movement. Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of the Newfoundland. Without this most important characteristic, there can be no Newfoundland. The Newfoundland's temperament is reflected in his soft, dignified and intelligent expression. Style is a manner of conduct or action, elegance, something that draws the eye. It doesn't change type, but adds to it, like icing on a cake. Good animals of a breed need to be of a like type, but there is still room for variations within that correct type.

It is made available under aCC-BY 4.0 International license. 2 22 Abstract 23 The epidemiology of Congenital Heart Diseases (CHDs) has changed over the past twenty years. 24 We evaluated the prevalence of CHDs in the population of dogs recruited in a single referral center (RC); 25 compared the epidemiological features of CHDs in screened breeds (Boxers) versus nonscreened (French and 26 English Bulldogs and German Shepherds), investigated the association of breeds with the prevalence of CHDs, 27 determined the popularity and volatility of breeds over a 20-year period; and analysed the trends of the most 28 popular breeds in the overall population of new-born dogs registered in the Italian Kennel Club from 1st January 29 1997 to 31st December 2017.
