Brinnin and Frances Malcolm Brinnin. When he was young his family moved to Detroit, Michigan. Brinnin graduated from the University of Michigan in 1942 and within a year entered graduate school at Harvard University. Brinnin, who was also a critic, anthologist, and teacher, taught at Vassar, Boston University, the University of Connecticut, and Harvard. He was Director of the Young Men's and Young Women's Hebrew Association Poetry Center (the 92nd Street Y) in New York City during one of the Center's most successful periods (1949-1956). Brinnin was the first person to bring Welsh poet Dylan Thomas to the United States and was responsible for all of Dylan Thomas's reading tours in this country. Brinnin's best known work, Dylan Thomas in America, published in 1955, provides a personal memoir of Dylan Thomas's trips to America as Brinnin observed them, and carries a moving account of the period of Thomas's death in 1953. -

The passion and pathos of legendary poet Dylan Thomas is told through the lives of two women. Vera Phillips and Dylan were childhood sweethearts; fast forward ten years and the two reconnect in war- time London. She‟s working as a singer whilst he‟s churning out propaganda scripts for government in aid of the war effort. The two feel the thunderbolt once more, but Thomas is now married to the adventurous Caitlin. Despite their love-rival status, the women form a surprising friendship; whilst Caitlin indulges in her own infidelities she knows her husband‟s connection with Vera is something deeper. In Vera‟s life the turmoil continues. She marries her devoted admirer William Killick, but when William is posted abroad on a dangerous assignment behind enemy lines Vera returns with her friends to Wales, where the battle between her heart and head becomes more intense. -

What influenced him to write? Jahrhunderts Dylan Thomas, Federico Grössing, 0401731 WALISISCHE LITERATUR & DER SOZIALHISTORISCHE HINTERGRUND IM 20.JAHRHUNDERT Die walisische Literatur und ihr Fortbestand zeichneten sich primär durch die Entwicklung und Weiterführung des Walisischen ab. Durch das internationale Interesse an der eigenen, „nationalen Literatur“ im Zuge der national-kulturellen Differenzierung der letzten Jahrhunderte, sowie des an sich wachsenden Nationalgefühles in Wales, walisische Dichter dazu animiert in ihrer eigenen Sprache zu schreiben. Das „Sterben“ des Walisischen & der begrenzte Sprachraum war letzten Endes für walisische Schriftsteller wenig förderlich. Thomas, der seine Texte in Englisch verfasste (und es somit auch schaffte auswärts der walisischen Sprachgrenzen erfolg zu haben), hatte ohnedies nie die Möglichkeit gehabt, sein literarisches Können in walisischer Sprache zu entfalten: sein Vater war strikt gegen das Praktizieren des Walisischen, „fütterte“ schon das junge Gehirn des Dylan Thomas mit Versen aus Shakespeare und förderte energisch das großer Interesse seines Sohnes an der englischen Sprache, ihrer Literatur und den Wörtern – „powerful, vigorous, and beautiful in their manifold meanings“. Industrielle Revolution, Weltkriege und gesellschaftliche Unruhen prägten den Beginn des 20.Jahrhunderts. Unberührt von den historischen Rumoren, verbrachte Dylan Thomas als Sohn eines relativ wohlhabenden & belehrten Lehrers ein glückliche Kindheit (die er auch in einigen seiner Gedichte aufgriff).
