  • An Introduction to BETRAYAL
An Introduction to BETRAYAL There are times in the life of any individual or organization when they are challenged by events entirely beyond their control. One such event happened in the life of our Goodwill that challenged us to our very core. That event was the fraud committed by Carol Braun. We take pride in our corporate values and our integrity. We were exposed and vulnerable. The real mark of an organization's strength is its capacity to weather the most difficult storms. I believe that "Betrayal" is a testament to the strength and integrity of our Goodwill. It is a living testament to our capacity to learn from our hardships and mistakes. The book has found its way to every corner of America and has served to comfort and inform others who have faced similar circumstances. This book is dedicated to the men and women of Goodwill, our "People". We are stronger, more resilient and more compassionate as a result of this experience. We hope that Betrayal will, in some small way, ease any personal or professional challenges the reader may face and we stand ready to help. Wen the fiduciary is a doctor or a lawyer, and the entrustor is a patient or client, this harm frequently goes unremedied. Be- trayals arise out of disloyalty and conflicts of interest where the lawyer or doctor puts his or her interest above that of his or her client or patient. They cause digni- tary harm that is different from the harm flowing from negligent malpractice. Nevertheless, courts, concerned with overdeterrence, have for the most part refused to allow a separate claim for betrayal. In this Article, we suggest that betrayal de- serves a remedy and propose a new statutory tort with limits on the available money damages.

Seldom however is toxicity discussed as a discourse. This essay aims to define the forms, origins, uses, and critical implications of toxic rhetoric, conceiving it as an interlocked set of topoi whose force derives partly from the exigencies of an anxiously industrializing culture, partly from deeper- rooted Western attitudes. In order to make this analysis pointed and manageable, and not to outrun the limits of my knowledge, I shall focus on the United States, although many of my points apply to Anglophone settler cultures worldwide, if not also to other regions (and few remain untouched) influenced by Western environmental institutions. As we shall see, toxic discourse challenges traditional understandings of what counts as an environmentalist movement or ethos. It calls for a new history of U.S. environmentalism that would place the wilderness preservationist John Muir and the urban social reformer Jane Addams in the same narrative.

Jimmie Killingsworth May 2010 Major Subject: English iii ABSTRACT Ethical Desire: Betrayal in Contemporary British Fiction. (May 2010) Soo Yeon Kim, B.A., Seoul National University; M.A., Seoul National University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. David McWhirter This dissertation investigates representations of betrayal in works by Hanif Kureishi, Salman Rushdie, Irvine Welsh, and Alan Hollinghurst. In rethinking “bad” acts of betrayal as embodying an ethical desire not for the good but for “the better,” this dissertation challenges the simplistic good/bad binary as mandated by neo-imperialist, late capitalist, and heteronormative society. In doing so, my project intervenes in the current paradigm of ethical literary criticism, whose focus on the canon and the universal Good gained from it runs a risk of underwriting moral majoritarianism and judgmentalism. I argue that some contemporary narratives of betrayal open up onto a new ethic, insofar as they reveal the unethical totalization assumed in ethical literary criticism’s pursuit of the normative Good.

  • Masculinity and Betrayal in the Life Narratives of Vietnam Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorden
Fathers, Sons, and Vietnam: Masculinity and Betrayal in the Life Narratives of Vietnam Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorden Tracy Karner Vietnam, it has been said, was first and foremost a division of sons from their fathers. It "made a whole generation of fathers look like liars and betrayers, and a whole generation of sons victims of their own initiation" into manhood.2 Symbolically, Vietnam represented the end of World War II warfare, the end of the United States' "winning streak," and perhaps, the end of traditional mascu linity in America. After Vietnam, American society was still a patriarchal system but, according to Boose, "with an unoccupied and no longer occupiable center."3 She elaborated, "chronologically bracketed by the assassination of the national father at one end, marked by the forced retirement of his successor at the middle, and culminating in the disgraced resignation, a few steps ahead of impeachment, of the final father of the era." The Vietnam war resulted in the "literal and symbolic evacuation of authority." The office of the Presidency was disempowered, the 1950s political ideology of consensus dissolved,4 and the authority of the father and his military model was morally challenged.5 In this "crisis of credibility," traditional hierarchies of authority and meaning crumbled under the weight of Vietnam and the ensuing social unrest.6 In this paper, I will illustrate this shift in traditional masculinity and patriarchal authority in the life narratives of specific Vietnam veterans by analyzing lengthy taped interviews in which they discuss their experiences. These men's narratives document the prevalence of World War II models in the lives and 0026-3079/96/3701 -063$ 1.50/0 63 images of their fathers in demonstrating how manhood was to be achieved.
