Cerulo Romance novels have changed significantly since they first entered the public consciousness. Instead of seeking to understand the changes that have occurred in the industry, in readership, in authorship, and in the romance novel product itself, both academic and popular perception has remained firmly in the early 1980s when many of the surface criticisms were still valid."Using Wendy Griswold’s (2004) idea of a cultural diamond, I analyze the multiple and sometimes overlapping relationships within broader trends in the romance industry based on content analysis and interviews with romance readers and authors. Three major issues emerge from this study. First, content of romance novels sampled from the past fourteen years is more reflective of contemporary ideas of love, sex, and relationships. Second, romance has been a leader and innovator in the trend of electronic publishing, with major independent presses adding to the proliferation of subgenres and pushing the boundaries of what is considered romance. Finally, readers have a complicated relationship with the act of reading romance and what the books mean in their lives.

  • An Introduction to BETRAYAL
An Introduction to BETRAYAL There are times in the life of any individual or organization when they are challenged by events entirely beyond their control. One such event happened in the life of our Goodwill that challenged us to our very core. That event was the fraud committed by Carol Braun. We take pride in our corporate values and our integrity. We were exposed and vulnerable. The real mark of an organization's strength is its capacity to weather the most difficult storms. I believe that "Betrayal" is a testament to the strength and integrity of our Goodwill. It is a living testament to our capacity to learn from our hardships and mistakes. The book has found its way to every corner of America and has served to comfort and inform others who have faced similar circumstances. This book is dedicated to the men and women of Goodwill, our "People". We are stronger, more resilient and more compassionate as a result of this experience. We hope that Betrayal will, in some small way, ease any personal or professional challenges the reader may face and we stand ready to help. • The Love of a Good Narrative: Textuality and Digitality TERESA M
English Teaching: Practice and Critique September 2006, Volume 5, Number 2 http://education.waikato.ac.nz/research/files/etpc/2006v5n2art4.pdf pp. 56-68 The love of a good narrative: Textuality and digitality TERESA M. DOBSON University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada ABSTRACT: It has often been observed that Alice Munro is a master of narrative complexity. “The love of a good woman”, in particular, is a story that challenges conventional notions of structure in short fiction through digression or deferral, discontinuity, layering, and so on. Ross (2002) rightly observes that conventional theories of reading fail to get at the process involved in achieving successful “apprenticeship” with Munro’s short fiction. This paper explores the intricacies of Munro’s creative craft as exemplified in “The love of a good woman” and proposes an approach to facilitating students’ engagement with complex narratives. Through creative writing in a computer-based “wiki” environment, it is argued, we encourage students to undertake the project of “layering” narrative and of establishing and interrogating complex narrative relations. This creative exercise, in turn, may facilitate their understanding of short fiction such as Munro’s. KEYWORDS: Digital literacy, textuality, English education, literacy education. THE LOVE OF A GOOD NARRATIVE: TEXTUALITY AND DIGITALITY The title story of Munro’s The love of a good woman begins in a small-town Ontario museum where, among the butter churns and horse harnesses, is displayed a box of optometrist’s instruments along with an explanatory note: “This box . has considerable local significance, since it belonged to Mr. D.M. Willens, who drowned in the Peregrine River, 1951.

  • Amazing Grace: the Near-Death Experience As a Compensatory Gift
Amazing Grace: The Near-Death Experience as a Compensatory Gift Kenneth Ring, Ph.D. University of Connecticut ABSTRACT: This paper illustrates the apparently providential timing and the healing character of near-death experiences (NDEs) and NDE-like epi sodes, through four case histories of persons whose lives, prior to their experi ences, were marked by deep anguish and a sense of hopelessness. Spiritually, such case histories suggest the intervention of a guiding intelligence that confers a form of "amazing grace" on the recipient. Methodologically, these reports point to the importance of taking into account the person's life history as a context for understanding the full significance of NDEs and similar awakening experiences. The article ends with a retrospective account of a childhood NDE in which "the big secret" of these experiences is disclosed. "We who are about to die demand a miracle." W. H. Auden (cited in Grosso, 1985) During the past fourteen years of my research on near-death experi ences (NDEs), I have often been struck by the seemingly providential character and timing of these experiences. An individual whose life is spinning out of control and heading on a clearly self-destructive course has an accident and experiences the healing balm of absolute love and unconditional acceptance in the light, and returns to life knowing he has been set right again. A man, after several previous suicidal ges tures, takes a massive overdose of barbiturates that would ordinarily guarantee his demise, but for some unknown reason an NDE super Kenneth Ring, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology at the University of Connecticut.
