Contemporary China: a Book List
PRINCETON UNIVERSITY: Woodrow Wilson School, Politics Department, East Asian Studies Program CONTEMPORARY CHINA: A BOOK LIST by Lubna Malik and Lynn White Winter 2007-2008 Edition This list is available on the web at: http://www.princeton.edu/~lynn/chinabib.pdf which can be viewed and printed with an Adobe Acrobat Reader. Variation of font sizes may cause pagination to differ slightly in the web and paper editions. No list of books can be totally up-to-date. Please surf to find further items. Also consult http://www.princeton.edu/~lynn/chinawebs.doc for clicable URLs. This list of items in English has several purposes: --to help advise students' course essays, junior papers, policy workshops, and senior theses about contemporary China; --to supplement the required reading lists of courses on "Chinese Development" and "Chinese Politics," for which students may find books to review in this list; --to provide graduate students with a list that may suggest books for paper topics and may slightly help their study for exams in Chinese politics; a few of the compiler's favorite books are starred on the list, but not much should be made of this because such books may be old or the subjects may not meet present interests; --to supplement a bibliography of all Asian serials in the Princeton Libraries that was compiled long ago by Frances Chen and Maureen Donovan; many of these are now available on the web,e.g., from “J-Stor”; --to suggest to book selectors in the Princeton libraries items that are suitable for acquisition; to provide a computerized list on which researchers can search for keywords of interests; and to provide a resource that many teachers at various other universities have also used. -

An Abstract of the Dissertation Of
AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Benjamin S. Murphy for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Geology presented on May 28, 2019. Title: Magnetotelluric Constraints on Lithospheric Properties in the Southeastern United States Abstract approved: _______________________________________________________ Gary D. Egbert By inverting EarthScope long-period magnetotelluric (MT) data from the southeastern United States (SEUS), we obtain electrical conductivity images that provides key insights into the geodynamics of this region. Significantly, we resolve a highly electrically resistive block that extends to mantle depths beneath the modern Piedmont and Coastal Plain physiographic provinces. As high resistivity values in mantle minerals require cold mantle temperatures, the MT data indicate that the sub- Piedmont thermal lithosphere must extend to greater than 200 km depth. This firm bound appears to conflict with conclusions from seismic results; tomography shows that velocities in this region are generally slightly slow with respect to references models. This observation has led to a seismically-informed view of relatively thin (<150 km), eroded thermal lithosphere beneath the SEUS. However, resolution tests demonstrate that our MT constraints are robust. Furthermore, narrow-band biases in MT transfer functions from the SEUS due to geomagnetic pulsations associated with field-line resonances support the presence of bulk resistive lithosphere in this region. We show that, by considering anelastic prediction of seismic observables, MT and seismic (tomography, attenuation, receiver function) results are in fact consistent with thick (~200 km), coherent thermal lithosphere in this region. Our results demonstrate the danger of interpreting seismic results purely in terms of reference models and the importance of integrating different geophysical techniques when formulating geodynamic interpretations. -

Annotated Atlatl Bibliography John Whittaker Grinnell College Version June 20, 2012
1 Annotated Atlatl Bibliography John Whittaker Grinnell College version June 20, 2012 Introduction I began accumulating this bibliography around 1996, making notes for my own uses. Since I have access to some obscure articles, I thought it might be useful to put this information where others can get at it. Comments in brackets [ ] are my own comments, opinions, and critiques, and not everyone will agree with them. The thoroughness of the annotation varies depending on when I read the piece and what my interests were at the time. The many articles from atlatl newsletters describing contests and scores are not included. I try to find news media mentions of atlatls, but many have little useful info. There are a few peripheral items, relating to topics like the dating of the introduction of the bow, archery, primitive hunting, projectile points, and skeletal anatomy. Through the kindness of Lorenz Bruchert and Bill Tate, in 2008 I inherited the articles accumulated for Bruchert’s extensive atlatl bibliography (Bruchert 2000), and have been incorporating those I did not have in mine. Many previously hard to get articles are now available on the web - see for instance postings on the Atlatl Forum at the Paleoplanet webpage http://paleoplanet69529.yuku.com/forums/26/t/WAA-Links-References.html and on the World Atlatl Association pages at http://www.worldatlatl.org/ If I know about it, I will sometimes indicate such an electronic source as well as the original citation. The articles use a variety of measurements. Some useful conversions: 1”=2.54 -

The Mishu Phenomenon: Patron-Client Ties and Coalition-Building Tactics
Li, China Leadership Monitor No.4 The Mishu Phenomenon: Patron-Client Ties and Coalition-Building Tactics Cheng Li China’s ongoing political succession has been filled with paradoxes. Jockeying for power among various factions has been fervent and protracted, but the power struggle has not led to a systemic crisis as it did during the reigns of Mao and Deng. While nepotism and favoritism in elite recruitment have become prevalent, educational credentials and technical expertise are also essential. Regional representation has gained importance in the selection of Central Committee members, but leaders who come from coastal regions will likely dominate the new Politburo. Regulations such as term limits and an age requirement for retirement have been implemented at various levels of the Chinese leadership, but these rules and norms will perhaps not restrain the power of Jiang Zemin, the 76-year-old “new paramount leader.” While the military’s influence on political succession has declined during the past decade, the Central Military Commission is still very powerful. Not surprisingly, these paradoxical developments have led students of Chinese politics to reach contrasting assessments of the nature of this political succession, the competence of the new leadership, and the implications of these factors for China’s future. This diversity of views is particularly evident regarding the ubiquitous role of mishu in the Chinese leadership. The term mishu, which literally means “secretary” in Chinese, refers to a range of people who differ significantly from each other in terms of the functions they fulfill, the leadership bodies they serve, and the responsibilities given to them. -

'Lothar Successor' - the Forgotten Storm After Christmas 1999
Phenomenological examination of 'Lothar Successor' - the forgotten storm after Christmas 1999 by F. Welzenbach Institute for Meteorology and Geophysics Innsbruck 04 April 2010, preliminary version Abstract The majority of scientific research to the notorious storms in December 1999 focuses on 'Lothar' and 'Martin' causing most of the damage to properties and fatalities in Central Europe. Few studies have been performed in the framework of the passage of storm 'Lothar Successor' (introduced in a case study of the Manual of synoptic satellite meteorology featured by ZAMG) between these two events being responsible for some gusts in exceed of 90 km/h between Northern France, Belgium and Southwestern Germany. The present study addresses to the phenomenology and possible explanations of that secondary cyclogenesis just after the passage of 'Lothar' and well before the arrival of 'Martin'. Facing different theories and findings in several papers it will be shown that the storm possessed a closed circulation and a fully developed frontal system. That key finding is especially in contrast to the analysis of the German Weather Service which suggested that solely a 'trough line' crossed Germany. The point whether a warm or a cold conveyor belt cyclogenesis produced the storm could not be entirely clarified. Finally, reasons are given for which 'Lothar Successor' had not become a 'second Lothar', amongst others the unfavourable position between two jetstreams with lack of sufficient cyclonic vorticity advection. 1. Introduction The motivation for reviewing the events from late December 1999 is mainly due to personal experience between the passage of 'Lothar' (26.12.1999) and 'Martin' (28.12.1999) in Lower Franconia close to Miltenberg (at the river Main between Frankfurt and Wuerzburg). -
