After numerous conversations regarding teaching on the DWC listserv, the Ad hoc Syllabus Collection Committee was formed as a way to share teaching materials within the division. Through this collection we hope to provide the DWC membership with an excellent teaching resource that both helps you to develop new courses and challenges you to think about teaching in new and creative ways. This collection, which includes syllabi and assignments, is organized into five sections. The first section addresses teaching about women, crime, and justice. Although these syllabi and assignments fall under a common theme, you will see that a variety of topics pertaining to the criminal justice system are addressed in each particular syllabus. These topics include: feminist theory, intersectionality, the law, and international issues in criminal justice. The second portion of the collection is focused on violence against women, including intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and stalking. On a related, but distinct topic, the third section addresses teaching victimology at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Next, the fourth section is specific to graduate level qualitative research methods. Although these syllabi may not specifically apply to your particular teaching load, they contain great ideas and recommendations that are applicable to teaching undergraduate research methods or courses on studying women‘s criminality. Finally, the last category addresses a variety of special topics including human trafficking, sex and the law, and social work in corrections. If you choose to use an assignment or idea from the collection, we do ask that you provide an acknowledgement to the author on your syllabus. There is a recommendation for how you can do this at the end of the collection. We would like to thank all of the DWC members who graciously contributed to this collection. Not only are we a group of excellent scholars, but we also have a wealth of teaching knowledge within our division. Journal entries culminating in a list of criteria with brief statements defining each one that you can use to determine whether a theory or piece of research fits in a feminist paradigm. 15% of grade 2. Journal entries culminating in a list of criteria with brief statements defining each one that you can use to determine whether research methods are consistent with a feminist paradigm. 15% of grade 3. ONE of the following in written and classroom presentation format: Whatever final assignment is selected, the product it should reflect a deep understanding of feminist theory and research. 30% of grade A. A proposal for a study that is ―doable‖ for a dissertation. The proposal must meet the requirements of either an NIJ dissertation fellowship, an NSF dissertation fellowship, or some other actual dissertation fellowship. The proposed research must contribute to feminist theory. A week-by-week syllabus with accompanying objectives, readings, abstracts for the readings, and explanations of reasons for the choice of readings that teaches about a core topic area in CJ/Criminology, for example, policing, courts, corrections, causes of crime – from a feminist perspective. Assignments should be included, with explanation of how the assignment will inform students of key feminist theory and methods. Specify whether the course is to be offered at the masters or undergraduate level. C. A 15-20 article reader (collection of journal articles) plus an excellent introductory chapter for the reader for a book to be used to teach students about feminist perspectives on some major topic relevant to criminal justice or criminology. The introduction must explain the order and choice of articles, and how the articles contribute to and are consistent with feminist theory and practice.     The Desired Object: Prostitution in Canada, United States and Australia THE DESIRED OBJECT: PROSTITUTION IN CANADA, UNITED STATES AND AUSTRALIA Suzanne E. Hatty Senior Lecturer and Coordinator Criminology School of Social Science and Liberal Studies Charles Sturt University New South Wales THE STATE REGULATION OF SEXUALITY CONTINUES TO GENERATE CONTRO-versy amongst feminist scholars and activists, criminologists and law-makers. Historically, the state has upheld traditional patriarchal institutions and supported male-biased rights concerning the deployment of sexuality and reproductive abilities. The state has actively sought to entrench women's position as home- maker and sexually-available partner, whilst at the same time contesting the right of women to practise prostitution. In a gender-stratified society, in which sex, sexuality and the body are socially- constructed, prostitution raises important questions about the nature of desire, pleasure, harm and violence. As Lowman (1986, p. 193) notes: For contemporary feminists, the sexual commodification of women creates an uneasy tension between a desire to suppress the trade and a desire to free prostitutes from state interference. On the one hand, prostitution represents the pole of a system of sexual stratification and must be resisted as the quintessential form of men's exploitation of women (and children of both sexes). Prostitution is the raw end [sic] of patriarchy. In this paper, the different ways in which prostitution by women is conceptualised by prostitute advocacy groups and academics in the United States and Australia will be examined. Current research on the experience of prostitution will be reviewed, with particular emphasis on information gathered during interviews with prostitute women in Canada.

    Statistics Canada – Catalogue no. 85-002-XPE Vol. 17 no. 2 STREET PROSTITUTION IN CANADA by Doreen Duchesne Highlights n In 1995, almost all of the 7,165 prostitution incidents reported by police nationally involved communicating to buy or sell the services of a prostitute (92%). The remaining incidents concerned procuring (5%) or bawdy-house (3%) offences. n Annual fluctuations in the number of reported prostitution incidents within jurisdictions are common and usually reflect changes in the enforcement of the communicating law, rather than the volume of criminal activity (Chart A). For example, between 1994 and 1995, the total number of Chart A prostitution incidents in Canada rose 29%, largely due to a substantial rise in communicating offences in Van- Communicating incidents in Canada couver. But this increase followed two years of steep declines, mainly traced to Toronto, Edmonton and Cal- gary (in 1994), and Vancouver (in 1993). Although numerous scholars have made arguments for and against prostitution, it is important to note that the issue is not just a moral one, but also one of safety and equality. The dangers that come with one engaging and/or participating in prostitution are quite evident, and the risks associated with prostitution are not a modern day occurrence. This paper will look at the jurisprudence of prostitution in Canada in order to argue that women, who engage in prostitution, whether it is a choice or a necessity, are the victims of abuse and dangerous conditions created by prostitution laws. In addition, this article will also examine society's preconceived notions behind sex work, whether they are on the grounds of morality or safety. This will be done while taking into account the jurisprudence of Bedford v. Canada, a precedent setting case which helped demonstrate the unconstitutionality of Canada's prostitution laws. INTRODUCTION Prostitution is a significant problem in the United States.1 There are an estimated 100,000 to 300,000 child sex workers in the United States2 and the prevalence of adult sex workers is 22.1 per 100,000.3 To reduce prostitution, lawmakers have criminalized the activity in all but one of the fifty states ofthe United States.4 Even when, in most jurisdictions, the statutes prohibiting prostitution prescribe similar punishments for customers and sex workers,5 in practice, the laws are frequently unequally applied.6 Sex Workers are often punished much more harshly and are prosecuted more frequently than customers. 7 Their behavior is criminalized, and they are socially stigmatized, which often prevents them from obtaining other work and therefore perpetuates prostitution.s This paper argues that because prostitution laws are unequally enforced . 1 "The act or practice of engaging in sexual activity for money or its equivalent; commen:ialized sex."
