The Kamani Family Andboohoo Group Donates £500,000 Of THE KAMANI FAMILY AND BOOHOO GROUP DONATES £500,000 OF TOYS TO HITS RADIO MISSION CHRISTMAS FOR THE SECOND TIME RUNNING The Kamani family and boohoo Group whose brands include Boohoo, BoohooMAN, PrettyLittleThing, Nasty Gal and Kamani Property Group has been working with Mission Christmas for donated £500,000 worth of toys to this year’s Mission Christmas, to help ensure the appeal can help as many children as possible from Greater Manchester area. The annual campaign run by Cash For Kids distributes toys to more than 400,000 disadvantaged children across the UK. With almost 1 in 3 children in Greater Manchester living in poverty this December, for many families Christmas is simply a luxury they can’t afford – Save the Children describe child poverty as living in a house with no central heating and going to bed at night without a hot meal. This year’s Mission Christmas aims to beat last year’s fundraising total and help make sure it can help as many children as possible from Greater Manchester can be supported. “Cash For Kids and Mission Christmas is a charity close to our hearts and something we are extremely passionate about. At this time of year it’s important we give something back to our community.” – The Kamani Family. To donate please visit Cash For Kids - http://www.cashforkids.uk.com/mission/ Hits radio have launched 2018’s “Mission Christmas” appeal and invited listeners and locals to buy one extra gift to help thousands of disadvantaged children in Greater Manchester. The largest Christmas toy appeal in the UK, Mission Christmas is an annual campaign run by Cash For Kids which is supported by Bauer Radio’s regional stations, including Hits Radio . In 2017 the appeal generated upwards of £17million in gifts and donations which were distributed to more than 400,000 disadvantaged kids across the UK – with over 60,000 of recipients in Greater Manchester . Gemma Atkinson said “Mission Christmas is a brilliant way for people to act in the true spirit of the season and give a little something to disadvantaged young people who really do deserve it”. “What was achieved by our generous listeners last year was truly amazing and I know we can do even better this year. Even one child living in poverty is too many but with thousands in Greater Manchester in that position Mission Christmas gives everyone the opportunity to make a real difference. “It’s easy to take part, all you need to do is buy one extra gift before 18 th December and hand it in to one of our many collection points, alternatively you can text ‘HITS’ to 70808 to donate £5 and we will buy a gift on your behalf. Let’s make 2018’s Mission Christmas our biggest and best ever and bring a little cheer to the children who need it most.” Supporters of the campaign can take their gifts to a number of drop-off points which you’ll find listed at Hitsradio.co.uk/mission which includes the charities partner B&M Bargains and B&M Home stores, as well as a new supporter this year, Manchester Arndale. This year Manchester’s Mission HQ, which acts as a hub for the receipt, sorting and distribution of gifts, is provided by The Mayfield Partnership and is based at Warehouse 5, Baring Street Manchester M1 2PY Those listeners who don’t have time to shop can text HITS to 70808 to make a £5 donation to the appeal (texts cost Standard network rate and 100% of the donation goes to CFK). Cash For Kids works with thousands of grass-root organisations across the UK who support disadvantaged children (0 – 18 years). Mission Christmas works closely with social workers, head teachers and the emergency services who will nominate families in crisis to be supported by the appeal. In advance of the launch (and throughout the campaign) organisations nominate the children they support, highlighting their age, gender and any special needs. Cash For Kids therefore knows how many children Mission Christmas is hoping to support and what age groups may be struggling for gifts throughout the appeal. • Music on PBS: a History of Music Programming at a Community Radio Station
Music on PBS: A History of Music Programming at a Community Radio Station Rochelle Lade (BArts Monash, MArts RMIT) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2021 Abstract This historical case study explores the programs broadcast by Melbourne community radio station PBS from 1979 to 2019 and the way programming decisions were made. PBS has always been an unplaylisted, specialist music station. Decisions about what music is played are made by individual program announcers according to their own tastes, not through algorithms or by applying audience research, music sales rankings or other formal quantitative methods. These decisions are also shaped by the station’s status as a licenced community radio broadcaster. This licence category requires community access and participation in the station’s operations. Data was gathered from archives, in‐depth interviews and a quantitative analysis of programs broadcast over the four decades since PBS was founded in 1976. Based on a Bourdieusian approach to the field, a range of cultural intermediaries are identified. These are people who made and influenced programming decisions, including announcers, program managers, station managers, Board members and the programming committee. Being progressive requires change. This research has found an inherent tension between the station’s values of cooperative decision‐making and the broadcasting of progressive music. Knowledge in the fields of community radio and music is advanced by exploring how cultural intermediaries at PBS made decisions to realise eth station’s goals of community access and participation. ii Acknowledgements To my supervisors, Jock Given and Ellie Rennie, and in the early phase of this research Aneta Podkalicka, I am extremely grateful to have been given your knowledge, wisdom and support.

  • Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage
Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Aaron Joseph Johnson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson This dissertation is a study of jazz on American radio. The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition.

In a world where music has become increasingly sanitized and unable to venture beneath the surface clichés of human emotion, Shane’s songs stand out in ever greater relief. None has bared their soul like Shane McGowan. His unique ability to plumb the dark recesses of the human soul, while in the very same breath celebrating its capacity to find healing transcendence, in both love and the sublime mysteries of existence, goes a long way to making sense of who we actually are.
