Beste lezers, TV-DX'ers / dear readers, TV DXers,

In het vorige DXR magazine hebben we al vermeld, dat NH en AT5 een nieuw nieuwsprogramma gelanceerd hadden en wel nader bepaald het “AT5 & NH NIEUWS”. Dit nieuws werd natuurlijk via alle zenders van NH én de multiplex NTS2 - AT5 (betaal TV !) uitgezonden. Foto A is het identificatie plaatje en foto B toont de omroepster van NH Media. Het zijn twee opnamen van Uw hoofdredacteur. Hij heeft deze foto's geschoten op kanaal D34V via de zender Hilversum, [15 kW. ERP], in de multiplex RTS, free-to-air. Ik schrijf “werd”, want nogmaals, dit nieuws is alweer bijgeschreven in de geschiedenisboeken...! Bij het intypen van deze tekst ben ik er achter gekomen, dat het hierboven vermelde nieuws niet meer uitgezonden wordt ! AT5 zendt het nieuws voortaan onder een andere naam uit en wel “Amsterdam vandaag”, zie foto C. AT5 is één van de programma's in de multiplex NTS en deze multiplex is gecodeerd (betaal TV !). Ik, Gösta, heeft het programma ontvangen op kanaal D45V via mijn plaatselijke zender Rotterdam / Waal- haven [10 kW. ERP]. NH zendt het nieuws nu weer uit zoals vanouds onder de naam “NH nieuws”, zie foto D welke eveneens geschoten is via de zender Hilversum.

Foto E is een identificatieplaatje van RTV Rijnmond, voorafgaand aan het programma “Welkom bij Rijnmond”. Deze foto is gemaakt via de zender Rotterdam / Waalhaven in de multiplex RTS op kanaal D21V, RTV Rijnmond, free-to-air. Foto F van wijlen Rijn is een opname van de ZDF zender Büderich / Wesel op kanaal E35 in het begin van de 70er jaren van de vorige eeuw met de tekst: > Kanal 35 Bitte entschüldigen Sie die während der Sendung aufgetredende Störung” < oftewel “Kanaal 35 Excuses voor de gedurende de uitzending opgetreden storing”

De ontvangst van analoge TV zenders vanuit het Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika is sinds 17 juni jl. niet meer mogelijk. Alle analoge TV zenders zijn daar op deze datum aan de deur gezet. In Algerijë zijn de analoge TV zenders op de UHF al in 2015 gesloten. Op 17 juni jl. zijn nu in dit land ook alle analoge TV zenders in VHF Band 3 stilgelegd. Hiervoor in de plaats zullen diverse DAB(+) zenders op antenne komen. Wat Algerijë betreft, gaan we nu zo'n 41 jaar terug in de tijd ! Want op 28 juni 1979 is de Algerijnse TV in Band 3 via Sp.E in ons land ontvangen ! De propagatie via de ionosfeer was op die dag werkelijk formidabel. Op die bewuste dag had de MUF van de Sp.E werkelijk een zeldzame hoogte bereikt. Zo hoog als het toen was, is ontzettend zeldzaam. De MUF reikte tot in VHF band 3 ! Rijn Munt- jewerff en Henny Demming waren de gelukkigen, die op kanaal E05 (174-181 MHz.) RTA (Algerijë) zagen. De opening begon om ongeveer 16.55 uur NT en duurde tot even na 17.00 uur NT. Bij Rijn in de Beemster kwamen de beelden het hardst door, zie zijn foto's G en H. Iets zuidelijker en wel bij Henny Demming in Amstelveen waren er steeds balken in het beeld, zie foto I. Dit was waar-

Daarentegen zag David Mosies in Hillegom helemaal geen RTA maar de RAI (Italië) op kanaal D = kanaal E05 ! Verrassend was eveneens, dat het geluid ook meekwam en uitstekend hoorbaar was. De beelden waren afkomstig van de zender Mont Cid met een vermogen van 150 kW. ERP. Deze zender staat op een berg van 1406 meter en wel aan de kust bij de grens met Tunesië. De afstand is circa 1750 km. De TV redactie van de BDXC was ten tijde van de publicatie van de RTA ontvangsten van RMu en HD in het BDXC Bulletin van augustus 1979 al op de hoogte van het feit, dat de het testbeeld van de Algerijnse TV al ruim drie weken eerder in ons land was waargenomen door een onbekende TV-DX'er in 's Gravenzande, zie foto J. Via een omweg kreeg de TV redactie tóch de noodzakelijke gegevens in zijn bezit. De TV-DX'er was Arie van Geest en maakte foto J op 6 juni 1979 tussen 15.30 en 18.00 uur NT, eveneens op kanaal E05. Ook het geluid was aanwezig in de vorm van een fluittoon, zoals bekend was bij dit soort testbeelden. Tot zover dan de memorable ontvangsten van de RTA door drie TV-DX'ers op twee dagen in het grijze verleden. In 1981 was de MUF weer uitzonderlijk hoog en toen heeft o.a. Rijn enkele TV zenders in VHF Band 3 ontvangen uit de toenmalige Sovjet-Unie via Sp.E ! Wat hebben we zoal gepubliceerd in dit DXR magazine ? Het zijn o.a. afleveringen van de “gebruikelijke” artikeltjes. Niels en Uw hoofdredacteur hebben deel 3 samengesteld van de serie “De DTV-T(2) zenders in Groot-Brittannlë met de digitale TV zenders in de regio “South East”. En voor onze TV-DX'ers in den vreemde hebben we alweer deel 8 geplaatst van de serie “The DVB-T2 transmitters in the Netherlands” met informatie over de digitale TV zenders in de provincie Overijssel (Ov). Pascal heeft weer veel DAB(+) nieuws verzameld. Hij heeft weer aan de tekentafel gezeten, hi ! In deel 3 van de serie “De DAB(+) zenders in Groot-Brittannië” heeft hij een zenderkaartje gemaakt met de DAB(+) zenders in de regio “East of England”. Natuurlijk zijn ook de details van deze zenders gepubliceerd. Nét als Niels en Uw hoofdredacteur heeft hij ook aan de DX'ers in den vreemde gedacht met de publicatie van deel 7 van de serie “The DAB+ transmitters in the Netherlands” met de gegevens van de DAB+ zenders in de provincie Gelderland (Gld). Er is wederom een aflevering van de serie “Contribution Spéciale”. Ten overvloede hebben we deze maand eveneens een Speciale Bijdrage (en ook een Special Contribution) over een draagbare satelliet (meet-)ontvanger, welke Hans Baard onlangs aangeschaft heeft ! En tot slot, de rubriek “TV loggings” mag er weer zijn. Ziezo, nu starten we met het nieuws in de vertrouwde rubriek: In the previous DXR magazine we already have mentioned that NH and AT5 had launched a new news programme, more specified the “AT5 & NH NEWS”. This news was of course aired via all NH tramnsmitters and also via the multiplex NTS2 - AT5 (pay TV!). Photo A is the ID Slide and photo B shows the female announcer NH Media. These are two photos, taken by Gösta via the transmitter Hilversum, [15 kW. ERP], in the multiplex RTS on channel D34V (free-to-air). But this news already has been added to the his- tory books...! While typing this text I have noticed that the news as mentioned above is no longer aired ! AT5 is now airing the news under another name, namely “Amsterdam vandaag” (Amsterdam today), see photo C. AT5 is one of the programmes in the multiplex NTS and this multiplex is encrypted (pay TV !). I, Gösta, have received this programme on channel D45V via my local transmitter Rotterdam / Waalhaven [10 kW. ERP]. NH is now broadcastsing the news again as usual under the name “NH Nieuws” (NH news), see photo D, which was also shot via the transmitter Hilversum. Photo E is an ID Slide of RTV Rijnmond, prior to the programme “Welkom bij Rijnmond” (Welcome to Rijnmond). This photo was taken via the Rotterdam / Waalhaven transmitter in the multiplex RTS - RTV Rijnmond on channel D21V, free-to-air. Photo F of the late Rijn Muntjewerff is a text as showed via the ZDF transmitter Büderich / Wesel on channel E35 in the early 1970s. The text tells us: > Kanal 35 Bitte entschüldigen Sie die während der Sendung aufgetredende Störung ”< or in other words “Channel 35 We apologize for the interference that occurred during this broadcast”. The reception of the analogue TV transmitters from the Middle East and North Africa is no longer possible since June 17 th last. All analogue TV transmitters have been taken out of service on this day. In Algeria all analogue TV transmitters on the UHF were already closed in 2015. On June 17th, all analogue TV transmitters in VHF Band 3 also have been taken out of service in this country. In VHF Band 3 various DAB(+) transmitters will be opened.

As far as Algeria is concerned, we are now going back in time about 41 years ! Because on June 28th, 1979, the Algerian TV was noticed in our country in VHF Band 3 via Sp.E ! The Sp.E propagation was truly formidable on that day. On that particular day, the MUF of the Sp.E had apparently reached a rare height. As high as it was then is indeed very rare ! The MUF reached into VHF Band 3 ! Rijn Muntjewerff and Henny Demming were the two lucky ones, who noticed the RTA (Algeria) on channel E05 (174-181 MHz.). The opening started at about 4.55 pm Dutch time and lasted until just after 5.00 pm Dutch time. The best images of the RTA have been noticed by Rijn in the Beemster, see his photos G and H. A little further south Henny Demming in Amstelveen noticed the same signal, but always with a lot of bars, probably co-channel interference from another station which also came with the RTA signal, see his photo I. On the other hand, David Mosies in Hillegom did not receive the RTA at all but the RAI (Italy) on channel D = channel E05. It was also surprising that the sound came along and was very audible. J). E05 RTA. (AGt). The images originated from the Mount Cid transmitter with a power of 150 kW. ERP, located on a mountain of 1406 meters on the coast near the border with Tunisia. The distance is approximately 1750 km. At the time of the publication of the RTA receptions of Rijn and Henny in the BDXC Bulletin of August 1979, the BDXC's TV editors

DX - ROTTERDAM VHF & UHF NIEUWS / NEWS * 263 * № 28, augustus / August 2020. were already aware of the fact that the test card of the Algerian TV already was noticed about three weeks earler by an unknown TV- DXer in 's Gravenzande, see photo J. Fortunately the TV editors received the necessary information via a detour. The TV-DXer was Arie van Geest and the reception was on June 6th, 1979 between 3.30 pm and 6 pm Dutch time, also on channel E05. The sound was also present in the form of a high whistle, as was known with this type of test cards. His photo J was published in the BDXC Bulletin of September 1979. For so far the memorable RTA receptions by three TV DXers on two days in the grey past. In 1981 the MUF was again exceptionally high and so Rijn has received a few TV transmitters in VHF Band 3 from the then Soviet Union via Sp.E ! What have we published in this DXR magazine? These include parts of the “usual” articles. Niels and your editor-in-chief have compiled part 3 of the series “The DTV-T(2) transmitters in Great Britain with the digital TV transmitters in the region “South East ”. And for our TV-DXers abroad, we have compiled already part 8 of the series “The DVB-T2 transmitters in the Netherlands” with some further information about the digital TV transmitters in the province of Overijssel (Ov). Pascal again has compiled a lot of DAB(+) news. He also sat at the drawing board again, hi ! In part 3 of the series "The DAB(+) transmitters in Great Britain" he has made a transmitter map with the DAB(+) transmitters in the region "East of England". Of course, the details of these transmitters also have been published. Just like Niels and your editor-in-chief, he also thought of the DAB DXers abroad with the publication of part 7 of the series “The DAB+ transmitters in the Netherlands” with the details of the DAB+ transmitters in the province of Gelderland (Gld). There is another episode of the series “Contribution Spéciale”. This month we also have a Speciale Bijdrage (and of course also a Special Contribution) about a portable satellite (measuring) receiver, which Hans Baard recently purchased ! Zo heeft Niels op 25 juni jl. het regionale avondnieuws “JT 19/20 Corse” ontvangen via vermoedelijk de zender Ajaccio / Coti-Chiavari op op het eiland Corsica op kanaal D21, @ FRANCE3 in reseau 1 (MUX 1). Op 26 juni jl. hoorde uw hoofdredacteur plotseling Zweeds uit de luidsprekers van zijn TV ! Jawel, hij heeft drie programma's op kanaal D41 ontvangen via de zender Hörby / Sallerup, @ SVT 1, SVT 2 én SVT BARN in Nät 1 (= MUX 1) ! Op dezelde dag heeft hij ook voor de eerste keer twee digitale TV zenders vanuit Denemarken ontvangen en wel: kanaal D33 MUX2 Kbh, København / Hove én op kanaal D35 Digi TV-Fyn, Tommerup. In de analoge tijd heb ik wel meer gemerkt, dat ik zeer verre zenders begon te ontvangen nét voordat K). R03 REN TV, Rostov / Don. (GLi). er een weersomslag plaats zou gaan vinden. Wat betreft het verhaaltje over de paar Sp.E DX ontvangsten in VHF Band 3 aan het begin van dit DXR Magazine, is mij is weleens in het verleden verteld, dat dit misschien iets te maken zou hebben met de ondergrondse & bovengrondse kernproeven in die tijd. Ba- kerpraatjes, toevalligheden of misschien wel de waarheid, wie zal het zeggen ? Géén bakerpraatje is mijn ontvangst van REN tv op kanaal R03 via de zender Rostov / Don via Sp.E DX ! Om 1055 UTC op 1 juli 2020 was er een redelijk goed signaal van deze zender in Rotterdam op het scherm aanwezig. Aangezien er geen andere zender te- gelijk op hetzelfde kanaal ontvangen werd, was er geen interferente, zie foto K. In de namiddag van 7 juli jl. heeft Niels o.a. een tamelijk sterk signaal ontvangen van het 1+1 programma op kan. R01 via de zender Kramatorsk. Foto L toont een fragment van het nieuws “TCH”. Dit nieuws werd uitgezondan vanaf 1645 EEST, (UTC +3h). Recentelijk hebben we, eerst met de hulp van zijn kleinzoon, wat foto's van Frans Ges- quière (FG) ontvangen, tnx ! Het zijn de foto's M tot en met AA op de volgende bladzijde. Het zijn diverse fragmenten van zijn ontvangst van een zender op kan. R02 op 30 mei jl. L). R01 1+1, Kramatorsk. (NLS). De foto's M, N en O tonen een logo rechtsboven in het beeld. Dit logo lijkt op een “3”. Op foto O is dit logo goed te zien in een wit vlakje. Op foto Y is een filmtekst te zien. Voor nadere details over deze ontvangst, zie het vorige DXR magazine, bladzijde 234 voor enige andere foto's én de bladzijden 240 en 241 voor de ontvangst zelf. Op 21 juni jl. heeft hij weer een programma ontvangen op kanaal R02 en wel van 0830 tot 0900 UTC. Er was o.a. een miliitaire parade te zien, zie zijn foto's AB tot en met AF. Op foto AG is dat logo “3” o.i.d. weer rechtsboven op het scherm te zien. Tenslotte tonen zijn foto's AH en AI een programma. Linksboven op het scherm is een tekst (plaatsnaam ?) te zien ! Beste lezers, DAB(+)-DX'ers / dear readers, DAB(+) DXers,

Aangezien ik nog steeds thuis moet blijven vanwege de corona crisis, heb ik volop de tijd gehad om de DAB(+) rubriek voor dit DXR magazine te compileren. Wat het DXR magazine betreft, hebben we er weer een aantal nieuwe lezers in de VS bij gekregen. Wel- licht meldt zich hier ooit ook nog eens een nieuwe TV-DX'er aan ? In ieder geval draait het DXR magazine al een tijdje erg goed mee in de DX-wereld. Het is dus een gans uitstekende zet van Niels en Gösta geweest, om in mei 2018 met het DXR magazine van start te gaan ná de uiterst gênante perikelen in de BDXC, waar ik al eerder en wel in het voorjaar van 2015 op een echte slinkse manier het slachtoffer van geworden ben. Denk aan mijn introductie (!) van een DAB(+) rubriekje in het BDXC Bulletin... Bon, nu begin ik echt af te dwalen, hi ! Gelukkig heb ik weer wat DAB(+) nieuws weten te vergaren. Zo heb ik een zenderkaartje getekend voor publicatie in het derde deel van de serie “De DAB(+) zenders in Groot-Brittannië”. Hierin staan natuurlijk ook (een gedeelte van) de overige gegevens van de DAB(+) zenders in de regio “East of England”. En voor de DAB(+)-DX'ers, welke woonachtig zijn buiten Nederland, heb ik deel 7 van de serie “The DAB+ transmitters in the Netherlands” gepubliceerd met de details van de DAB(+) zenders in de provincie Gelderland (Gld). Since I still have to stay home because of the corona crisis, I have had plenty of time to compile the DAB(+) column for this DXR Magazine. As for the DXR Magazine, we have some new readers in the US. Perhaps we will have also a new TV-DXer here soon ? In any case, the DXR magazine is doing well for a while in the “DX world”. So it has been a very excellent move of Niels and Gösta to start with the DXR magazine in May 2018 after the very embarrassing perils in the BDXC, of which I earlier also had fallen victim

AZERBAIJAN ☞ Azerbaijan takes first steps toward DAB+ deployment. The Azerbaijan Automobile Dealers Association (AADA) confirmed it will carry out a review of the current radio landscape in Azerbaijan, with particular focus on DAB+, and to include market research to understand more fully the perceptions and needs of both drivers and car dealers in relation to radio. Beste lezers, DAB(+)-DX'ers / dear readers, DAB(+) DXers,

Deze maand hebben we de inzendingen kunnen verwerken van NLS, LLU, JON, PTR en GLi, tnx ! Ook gedurende deze periode zijn er goede tropsferische condities geweest. En ducts gaven eveneens soms mooie ontvangsten. En er zijn weer enkele "exoten" gerapporteerd. Immers, de hoogtepunten van deze periode zijn ongetwijfeld de ontvangsten op 23 juni vanuit Oostenrijk, Tsjechië en Slovenië door de twee zoons van Niels, de ontvangsten op 26 juni vanuit Denemarken door Gösta en de ontvangsten op 7 juli vanuit Italië door weer de twee zoons van Niels. Verder worden de onlangs geopende "zwakke broeders", oftewel de "100 Watt zendertjes", relatief vaak gehoord. We houden deze inleiding verder kort en gaan meteen van start met alle ontvangsten ! This month we were able to compile the loggings of NLS, LLU, JON, PTR and GLi, tnx ! Also during this period there have been some good tropospheric conditions. Nice receptions also were possible thanks to ducts. And we have listed again a few “exotics”, because the highlights of this period are undoubtedly the receptions on June 23rd from Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovenia by the two sons of Niels, the receptions on June 26th from Denmark by Gösta and the receptions on July 7th from Italy by again the two sons of Niels. Furthermore, the new “weak brothers”, or the “100 Watt transmitters”, are still heard relatively often. We will keep this foreword short end we immediately will start now with all the receptions !

Toen ik na mijn boodschappenritje weer thuisgekomen was, heb ik meteen de TV en DAB(+) ontvanger aangezet. Op de TV was er niets te zien vanuit Groot-Brittannië maar op mijn DAB(+)

This morning Studio Brussel at 100.90 MHz. (Schoten) was once again replaced by Classic FM (London) on my car radio. So there were tropo conditions ! When I got home after my grocery ride, I immediately switched on the TV and DAB(+) receiver. On TV there was nothing to see from Great Britain, but on my DAB(+) radio I have noticed three ensembles via the transmitter Mendlesham ! $) Zenderlocatie in Oostenrijk.

**** DE GTMEDIA V8 FINDER ****

Ik heb onlangs een leuk speeltje gekocht, een GtMedia V8 finder. Het is een kleine draagbare meetontvanger voor de digitale satelliet ontvangst. Officieel loopt hij alleen de satelliet Band af, dus van 10,7 tot 12,75 GHz. Maar de tuner kan ook 'buiten' Band kijken, dus ook op 10,492 GHz. Zo is de Es'hail 2 op 25.8° oost te ontvangen, zónder dat daar dus een aparte LNB voor nodig is. De meeste LNB's geven ook onder de 10,7 GHz nog signalen door, maar een standaard satelliet ontvanger kan deze signalen niet verwerken. De V8 Finder dus wel.

De schotel staat scheef omdat hij op een rotor staat, waarmee ik langs de geostationaire baan kan lopen zonder de schotel steeds maar weer te verplaatsen. Die rotor kan ik ook bedienen vanaf de V8 finder. Hij ondersteunt USALS, dus zo hoef ik mij stoel niet meer uit. Zoals je ziet, is de stream van 2MS/s naar 1.5MS/s. Er is nog een mogelijkheid om de reduced bandwidth ontvangen van QO-100. Daarvoor heb ik wel een nieuwe LNB aangeschaft. Deze werkt op een LO die gebaseerd is op een PLL schakeling, waardoor de ontvangst stabieler is. De oudere LNB's gebruiken een

The photos I – V are showing the reception of Es'hail 2 QO-100 and the dish in the garden. Now here is an option to receive the reduced bandwidth from QO-100. I did purchase a new LNB for that. It works on an LO which is based on a PLL circuit making reception more stable. Older LNBs use a DRO, which is not stable and is also temperature sensitive. **** EEN TERUGBLIK: VÉÉL VERDRIET..., GROTE VREUGDE !!! **** Het zal voor U geen verrassing meer zijn dat ik, Gösta, al weer een tijd geleden weer héél goed mijn draai heb gevonden in de DXR als een zéér grote verademing ná alle bittere ellende in de BDXC, welke destijds elke keer veroorzaakt is door dezelfde oude rotte appel in het BDXC mandje. Deze ellende is onbetwistbaar begonnen met de publicatie van dé ultieme DAB leugen (lees: een uiterst zielige én misselijkmakende zelfverheerlijking !) in het jaar 2015, gevolgd in het jaar 2018 met een compleet verziekte TV rubriek. Tegen het einde van datzelfde jaar, toen ik al terecht opgestapt was als TV redacteur, volgde er als een onverwachte klap op de vuurpijl en ook nog eens op de valreep (!) een enorme stortvloed van weerzinwekkende beledigingen, welke gericht was aan mijn persoontje én ook aan “mijn” rubriek in het BDXC Bulletin @ TELEVISION... Dit was toen meteen dé druppel die de emmer deed overlopen met als logisch gevolg, dat ik aan het einde van dat jaar de BDXC deur voorgoed achter mij heb dichtgesmeten ! Ik beschouw deze laatste achterbakse gebeurtenis nog steeds als een zéér pijnlijke trap na als véél stank voor dank voor mijn ruim 38 jarige periode als TV redacteur, waarin ik mij jaar in jaar uit, maand in maand uit (méér dan 460 maanden !!!), écht uitgesloofd heb..., jawel, voor de BDXC...! Maar gelukkig kan ik, samen met mijn drie eveneens trotse (!) mede-redacteuren, U wederom een nu wel erg fors uitgevallen DXR magazine presenteren. In dat geval waren we al lang failliet gegaan vanwege de drukkosten en de astronomisch gestegen portokosten... **** A RETROSPECT: A LOT OF PAIN..., GREAT JOY !!! **** You won't be surprised that I, Gösta, really have found as a very great relief my place in the DXR already some time ago áfter all the bitter misery at the BDXC, which was caused at the time by only one famous old rotten apple in the BDXC basket !I! This biiter misery started indisputably with the publication of thé nauseating DAB lie (read: a disgusting self-glorification !) in the year 2015, followed in the DXR ! year 2018 by a completely spoiled TV column. And that was not all, because later in that year, just after I left as a TV editor, a torrent of very gross insults followed as an unexpectedly icing on the cake, direc- ted towards me and also towards “my” column in the BDXC Bulletin @ TELEVISION... This was immediately the drop that caused the bucket to overflow, with the logical consequence that I slammed the BDXC door behind me for good at the end of that year! I still consider this latest sneaky event to be a very painful kick in the gut for thanking me for over 38 years as a TV editor, in which I put in the hours year after year, month after month (more than 460 months !!!), yes, for the BDXC ... ! Fortunately, together with my three esteemed also very proud co-editors (!), today I again can present you a very large DXR magazine. Due to the Contribution Spéciale, the Speciale Bijdrage and the Special Contrbution, together with the bulging TV- and DAB- Logbooks, this has become a very thick edition. Fortunately, we dont publish a printed DXR magazine. In that case we would have gone bankrupt for a long time ago, because of the printing costs and the astronomically increased postage costs... Anyway, this shows very well that all editors get along well and, more importantly, can work very well with each other end besides they all are experts in their trade ! Re. this DXR Magazine, perhaps something went wrong ? If you see a mistake, please let us know. ☞ The moral of this little story is: After (a lot of) rain always comes sunshine, also for me, hi ! (MCO, via PCO). i) Mount Wilson is a peak in the San Gabriel Mountains, located within the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and Angeles National Forest in Los Angeles County, California. With only minor topographical prominence the peak is not naturally noticeable from a distance, although it is easily identifiable due to the large number of antennas near its summit. While not the tallest peak in its vicinity, it is high enough in elevation that snow can some- times interrupt astronomical activities on the mountain. All of the mountains south of the summit are far shorter leading to unobstructed views across the Los Angeles Basin, Orange County, the Inland Empire, and out to Ventura County, San Diego County and the Pacific Ocean. On most days Santa Catalina Island, California, some 65 miles south, is visible. On clear days, other Channel Islands visible include San Clemente Island at 95 miles, Santa Barbara Island at 76 miles, San Nicolas Island at 107 miles, Santa Cruz Island at 98 miles and San Miguel Island at 133 miles. The Mount Wilson Observatory (MWO) is an astronomical observatory in Los Angeles County, California. The MWO is located on Mount Wilson, a 1,740-metre (5,710-foot) peak in the San Gabriel Mountains near Pasadena, northeast of Los Angeles. The observatory contains two historically important telescopes: the 100-inch (2.5 m) Hooker telescope, which was the largest aperture telescope in the world from its completion in 1917 to 1949, and the 60-inch telescope which was the largest operational telescope in the world when it was completed in 1908. It also contains the Snow solar telescope completed in 1905, the 60 foot (18 m) solar tower completed in 1908, the 150 foot (46 m) solar tower completed in 1912, and the CHARA array, built by Georgia State Univer- sity, which became fully operational in 2004 and was the largest optical interferometer in the world at its completion. Due to the inversion layer (TV DX, hi !) that traps smog over Los Angeles, Mount Wilson has steadier air than any other location in North America, making it ideal for astronomy and in particular for interferometry. The increasing light pollution due to the growth of greater Los Angeles has limited the ability of the observatory to engage in deep space astronomy, but it remains a productive center, with the CHARA Array continuing important stellar research. The telescope remained the world’s largest until 1949 but was only active for about 40 years of its lifetime. In its early days, astronomers from around the world flocked to Mount Wilson Observatory to use the telescope and its predecessor, the 60-inch telescope. One of the most notable astronomers to work at the observatory was Edwin Hubble (the namesake of the modern Hubble Space Telescope). In its heyday, California’s 100-inch telescope brought space into clear focus. It was one of astronomer George Ellery Hale’s four attempts at building the world’s largest telescope during the early 20th century. Among his giants, the 100-inch is best known for being the first to see beyond our Milky Way galaxy. That’s right, it spotted the universe ! In 2017 this 100-inch telescope turned 100 years old !
