WADESTOWN SCHOOL Community Newsletter Principal: Sally Barrett Website: www.wadestown.school.nz Thursday 29 June, 2017 Dear Parents A Special Thank You from Us All to Our Wonderful PTA Volunteers I would to begin this last school Community Newsletter for the term by acknowledging the tremendous contribution of our two outgoing PTA co-chairs, Katy Pearce and Kirsty Bennett. Both Katy and Kirsty have worked tirelessly for Wadestown School over the last four years. They have been involved in a variety of innovative fundraising activities, welcoming new families to Wadestown School and led many other PTA initiatives. Under their skilled leadership the PTA has flourished and grown. Katy and Kirsty will be remembered for their positive attitude, superb organisational skills and ensuring that every PTA initiative they have undertaken has always benefitted the students of Wadestown School. What an amazing contribution you have both made. David Dick, our long-serving PTA treasurer is also standing down after a superb contribution, not only as our treasurer but being involved in many other PTA activities including several years of assisting with the mid-year social fundraisers. This year was no exception and David played a significant role in the success of the Kiwiana Party. David has also taken a leading role in emergency management at Wadestown School and assisted us by purchasing and preparing a kit for each area of the school with tools and equipment that would be required in an emergency. Thank you David for your commitment and support. Anna Sims has been a very dedicated supporter of the PTA and has undertaken many varied roles over the years she has been so actively involved. Anna has now stepped down as Class Co-ordinator Leader and we thank her on behalf of us all for ensuring that our class coordinators are assisted and supported in their roles. Anna has organised a large number of social events for parents to enjoy and get to know each other over the years and her contribution will be remembered with appreciation from us all. News from the Rimu Team (Years 5-6) This week sees the completion of our Arts rotation which has been running throughout Term 2. The students have enjoyed moving between teaching spaces, teachers and arts domains. The emphasis has been on techniques and processes rather than performance. The visual artist Ms Wilkinson focused on was Sandra Silberzweig. The students worked through the process of creating their own artwork in her style. In music Miss Pullin taught the students how to create a piece of music and play it together as part of a group of musicians. Miss Julian’s dance sessions were based around the style and technique of hip hop which lends itself easily to both boys and girls of this age group. Ms Honore explored drama techniques and how to depict a character. The students aimed to used emotion, action and voice to portray different characters. “I liked the dance moves we learned because they looked really good” – James “I learned lots of new dance moves” – Ellie “I loved learning new techniques in art” – Lauren “It was fun and I learned a lot more about the arts” – Maddi Mid-year Written Reports and Parent Teacher Conferences:Monday 3-Thursday 6 July Mid-year Written Reports have been distributed today to all students to take home to share with parents. Next week 15 minute parent teacher conferences will be held throughout the school and we have already had an excellent response from parents who wish to take up this opportunity. Thank you in advance to the wonderful parents who will be providing afternoon tea for all staff at the Rose St and Weld St sites during our parent teacher conferences next week. This kind gesture is much appreciated by all the staff. Inter-zone Cross Country Results The Inter-zone Cross Country was held on Tuesday 20 June and Wadestown School did really well. PTA Update Last night the Parent Teacher Association met and confirmed new officers. We welcomed on board Genevieve Hancock as the new chair to replace retiring co-chairs Kirsty Bennett and Katy Pearce. We also welcomed the new Treasurer, Duncan McLaren, who replaces Dave Dick. Nicky Ward was confirmed as the Class Co- ordinator Leader. A big thank you to those stepping up, and the officers who have devoted so much time and effort in recent years to the PTA. We still have the position of fundraising co-ordinator vacant and welcome volunteers. Dave Dick noted in his final report as Treasurer last night how much the PTA has raised in the last four years for the Wadestown School Board of Trustees. He reported that over $172,000 had been raised and donated to the Board during that time. More than $100,000 of that had come from the two House & Garden Walk events held in that period, but other fundraising work had also contributed to the total fundraising effort. Save the Dates Please save the dates for the following three events: * 16 August: Next PTA meeting, Rose St Staffroom, 7.30pm – all welcome * 2 September: Inspire Photography for family and child photos * 16 September: School Working Bee On behalf of the staff I would like to thank everyone for their support and assistance during an action-packed term. We have enjoyed some wonderful class trips throughout the school and valued your assistance with many special programmes. This includes volunteering in our school library, assisting with our Preceptual Motor Programme in Year 1-2, supporting our fabulous Book Week and attending the Kiwiana Party fundraiser earlier in the term. This was such a successful night and everyone who attended not only had a great time but raised significant funds to extend our bike and scooter racks at school. These activities would never be possible without the great group of parents we have. Thank you from the staff and students to you all. I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break and look forward to seeing everyone again when school re- opens on Monday 24 July. Kind regards, Sally Barrett Principal Sushi Lunches is moving to a new website, ezlunch!
