It produces the ‘Hill of Grace’, one of Australia’s “cult wines”, and was considered Australia’s second best wine by James Halliday in 2009. This month the Royal Automobile Club of Australia will be offering you 2 exceptional Wines from the Henschke range. Maturation Fermented in tank and bottled post-vintage to preserve the delicate aromatic fruit characters. Background The riesling takes its name from a local landmark, Peggy’s Hill, at the top of the range between Eden Valley and Keyneton. Produced from selected traditional Henschke Eden Valley growers, whose vines are up to 50 years old, growing in low-vigour ancient Cambrian soils at around 500m altitude. The Eden Valley riesling displays exceptional varietal and regional characteristics. Wine Description Pale straw with lime hues. Vibrant, perfumed aromas of citrus blossom, frangipani, lemon and lime zest with hints of musk and stone-fruit. The palate shows intense lime juice and fresh stone-fruit flavours, complemented by steely minerality and beautiful acidity, for a long, fine crisp finish. Maturation Viognier co-fermented with shiraz; grenache and mataro fermented separately. Matured in seasoned French hogsheads for 10 months prior to blending and bottling. Background The shiraz, grenache, mataro, viognier blend is a tribute to Henry Evans who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. He quickly developed a reputation for producing the best wines in the southern colony. Following Henry’s death in 1868, his widow Sarah exercised her temperance convictions by closing the winery and uprooting all the winegrapes. This blend highlights the historical introduction of southern French and Spanish varieties to South Australia in those early pioneering days and reflects the history, religion and culture of the Barossa. Wine Description Deep ruby with purple hues. Pronounced aromas of ripe raspberry, plum, blackberry, with hints of white flowers and lavender, complimented by savoury nuances of black pepper, bay leaf and charcuterie. The palate displays focused raspberry and dark plum fruits, with lively acidity and beautifully balanced fine, soft tannins providing texture, for a long, structured finish.
