The goal was that we would read the book chapter by chapter and then get together to discuss. While we haven’t been able to meet as often as we would like, I have read the book on my own. I think that this book has great insight. • Vultum Dei Quaerere
EMBARGO until 12n (10 am U.T.C.) HOLY SEE PRESS OFFICE of July 22, 2016 FRANCIS APOSTOLIC CONSTITUTION VULTUM DEI QUAERERE ON WOMEN’S CONTEMPLATIVE LIFE 1. SEEKING THE FACE OF GOD has always been a part of our human history. From the beginning, men and women have been called to a dialogue of love with the Creator.1 Indeed, mankind is distinguished by an irrepressible religious dimension that leads human hearts to feel the need – albeit not always consciously – to seek God, the Absolute. This quest unites all men and women of good will. Even many who claim to be non-believers acknowledge this heartfelt longing, present in every man and woman who, drawn by a passionate desire for happiness and fulfilment, never remains fully satisfied. Saint Augustine eloquently expressed this yearning in the Confessions: “You made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you”.2 This restlessness of heart is born of the profound intuition that it is God himself who takes the initiative; he seeks out men and women and mysteriously draws them to himself. In seeking God, we quickly realize that no one is self-sufficient. Rather, we are called, in the light of faith, to move beyond self-centredness, drawn by God’s Holy Face and by the “sacred ground of the other”,3 to an ever more profound experience of communion. Through Baptism, every Christian and every consecrated person is called to undertake this pilgrimage of seeking the true God. By the working of the Holy Spirit, it becomes a sequela pressius Christi – a path of ever greater configuration to Christ the Lord.

  • Muslim Women's Pilgrimage to Mecca and Beyond
Muslim Women’s Pilgrimage to Mecca and Beyond This book investigates female Muslims pilgrimage practices and how these relate to women’s mobility, social relations, identities, and the power struc- tures that shape women’s lives. Bringing together scholars from different disciplines and regional expertise, it offers in-depth investigation of the gendered dimensions of Muslim pilgrimage and the life-worlds of female pilgrims. With a variety of case studies, the contributors explore the expe- riences of female pilgrims to Mecca and other pilgrimage sites, and how these are embedded in historical and current contexts of globalisation and transnational mobility. This volume will be relevant to a broad audience of researchers across pilgrimage, gender, religious, and Islamic studies. • New Instructions for the Contemplative Life of Women
New instructions for the contemplative life of women Pope provides precise guidelines regarding practical and spiritual aspects pertaining to founding and running of monasteries for contemplative nuns (Photo by Robert Frank Gabriel) The Vatican has released a new instruction with norms for contemplative orders of nuns so as to encourage cooperation among their monasteries and safeguard those left with only a few members. The document, Cor Orans ("Praying Heart") is a follow-up instruction on implementing Pope Francis' 2016 document Vultum Dei Quaerere ("Seeking the Face of God"). These documents safeguard the identity and mission of contemplative nuns. The new instruction seeks to fill the legislative gaps left since Pope Pius XII's apostolic constitution Sponsa Christi from 1950, and to carry out fully the mandate in Vultum Dei Quaerere. The new document Cor Orans dated April 1, was presented by Vatican officials only in Italian and Spanish. However, shortly afterwards the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (CICLSAL) published an English translation of the text. Archbishop José Rodríguez Carballo, secretary of the congregation, told reporters that a significant change is requiring a monastery or contemplative community of women religious to have at least eight professed religious women to maintain their autonomy, Catholic News Service reported. However, if that number drops to five professed religious, they lose their right to elect a superior. The Vatican congregation is then informed of the situation, and an ad hoc commission is formed to name an administrator, he said. The outside intervention is meant to assess whether the community's difficulties are "temporary or irreversible," the archbishop was quoted as saying.

Bishop John Cunningham of Gal- loway said it was extremely ‘sad’ that the Whithorn Trust, which runs the Whithorn museum and visitor centre and promotes the archaeology and heritage of the site where St Ninian established a church in 397 AD, is facing an £18,500 shortfall that means it may have to close its doors in August. Bishop Cunningham, whose diocese holds an annual pilgrimage to Whithorn, said the trust did a ‘wonderful’ job. “As bishop of the Diocese of Gal- loway I am very aware of the important contribution that the Whithorn Trust has made in maintaining and promoting the traditions of Whithorn,” he said. “The area is such an important part of our Fr David Borland, parish priest at St Andrew’s, Dumfries, led 48 parishioners on pilgrimage to Iona to mark the 200th anniversary of their parish opening (see page 5), sup- Christian heritage, and the trust has done ported by Fr Joe Holmes of Annan. • 045-San Nicola in Carcere
(045/43) San Nicola in Carcere San Nicola in Carcere (St Nicholas in Prison) is a 16th century titular church and a minor basilica, and is also the regional church for those from Puglia and Lucania living in Rome. The basilica isnear the Forum Boarium in rione Ripa. The church is dedicated to St Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors and of children and the remote cause of the phenomenon of Santa Claus. His shrine is at Bari which is why this church is the national church for those who moved from Puglia and Lucania to Rome. [1] [4] The reference to ‘Prison’ is obscure. 'In carcere' probably refers to a tradition, supported by Pliny's history of Rome, that there was once a prison here, built in the ruins of the temples. [1] History Perhaps the most interesting thing about the church is that it incorporates the remains of three temples of the Republican era (2nd century BC) which used to stand in a row, side by side in the ancient Forum Holitorium (a vegetable market) with their entrances facing east. How the three temples became a church is a process which is completely obscure. [1] The northernmost was dedicated to Janus, and had two rows of six Ionic columns of peperino at the entrance and eight down each side. Two survive to the north, and seven to the south embedded with their architrave in the church's north wall. Well-preseved parts of the podium also survive in the crypt. The site of the middle temple is occupied by the church; it was dedicated to Juno Sospita and was in the Ionic style.

INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings of^pitterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

  • Pope Creates 13 New Cardinals, Including Washington Archbishop
Pope creates 13 new cardinals, including Washington archbishop VATICAN CITY (CNS) — One by one 11 senior churchmen, including two U.S. citizens — Cardinals Wilton D. Gregory of Washington and Silvano M. Tomasi, a former Vatican diplomat — knelt before Pope Francis to receive their red hats, a cardinal’s ring and a scroll formally declaring their new status and assigning them a “titular” church in Rome. But with the consistory Nov. 28 occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic, Pope Francis actually created 13 new cardinals. Cardinals Jose F. Advincula of Capiz, Philippines, and Cornelius Sim, apostolic vicar of Brunei, did not attend the consistory because of COVID-19 travel restrictions; however, they are officially cardinals and will receive their birettas and rings at a later date, the Vatican said. In his homily at the prayer service, Pope Francis told the new cardinals that “the scarlet of a cardinal’s robes, which is the color of blood, can, for a worldly spirit, become the color of a secular ’eminence,'” the traditional title of respect for a cardinal. If that happens, he said, “you will no longer be a pastor close to your people. You will think of yourself only as ‘His Eminence.’ If you feel that, you are off the path.” For the cardinals, the pope said, the red must symbolize a wholehearted following of Jesus, who willingly gave his life on the cross to save humanity. The Gospel reading at the service, Mark 10:32-45, included the account of James and John asking Jesus for special honors. “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left,” they said.
