Chapter 1 Waldorf Teacher Education: Methodology of the Study Section 1 Introduction 1. Background information The primary focus of most of the literature on Steiner or Waldorf Education ~ whether couched in ways variously intending to theorise, compare, inform, expound, or extol ~ has been on the question of how children (whether of early childhood, primary or high school years) should be educated. The main aim of this thesis is to explore the question of how Waldorf teachers should be educated. In order to begin to tackle this seemingly straightforward question it seemed logical to begin at the beginning, that is, with the theory underlying what Waldorf teachers were being educated for. Steiner’s educational theory is explicit in maintaining that education is about facilitating the process of becoming more human. But aren’t we human enough already? What does it mean to become more human? How are human beings (for so long referred to as ‘Man’) constituted? What is ‘Man’? In some ways the trend of the questioning is reminiscent of, and inevitably leads to, the Classical Greek injunction “O Man. Know Thyself”1. It was in contemplating these questions that the realisation came of what the underlying core of the thesis would be. Something had to be said about what Steiner believed the human being to be, and therefore how the education of the human being should proceed. BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE PUBLISHED WRITINGS OF OWEN BARFIELD 1917 - 2019 COMPILED BY JANE W. HIPOLITO Acknowledgments: Owen Barfield was an astonishingly prolific author. His earliest publication appeared in 1917; the most recent listing in this bibliography is 2019. Barfield wrote on a wide variety of topics in very diverse venues, several of which do not appear in any publication indexes, databases, or other bibliographic resources. Accordingly, discovering what the published writings of Owen Barfield are, as well as tracking down and confirming the publication details, has been a complex process lasting more than a quarter of a century, throughout which I have needed and received much help. There are many people to thank for the 2019 Barfield Bibliography. G. B. Tennyson warmly invited me to undertake this project in 1980. Many of Barfield’s published writings are listed in the pioneering bibliography which Professor Tennyson compiled for the 1976 Festschrift in Barfield’s honor, Evolution of Consciousness: Studies in Polarity. I am deeply grateful for Professor Tennyson’s trust in me, and for his 1976 bibliography, which has been a major resource for Barfieldian studies. Owen Barfield immediately supported Professor Tennyson’s invitation and provided substantial help, opening up his own files and personally introducing me to the staff of Rudolf Steiner House in London, which holds copies of numerous hard-to-find Barfield publications. From the outset, Thomas Kranidas also has been inexhaustibly helpful and encouraging; I am much indebted to Professor Kranidas for his astute advice and generosity, especially concerning Barfield’s little-known imaginative writings. Tintagel: In the footsteps of Rudolf Steiner Dr John Paull john.paull[a]mail.com On his final visit to Britain, Rudolf Steiner’s schedule of lecturing was hectic. He delivered three lectures a day during the Anthroposophical Society’s Summer School at Torquay (11-22 August 1924) - but that is another story. Steiner took one day out of that busy schedule to be a tourist for a day. The decision took him as far west as he ever ventured in his lifetime - to the west cost of Cornwall. Tintagel is the legendary home of King Arthur, Merlin, the sword Excalibur, the Lady of the Lake, the Knights of the Round Table, Sir Lancelot, Queen Guinevere, and the court of Camelot. Ashley (2010) dates the Arthurian period as between 400-600 AD but there is no extant documentation to distinguish between myth, legend, and veridical history. Midway through the Torquay Summer School, on Sunday August 17th, Rudolf Steiner declared “I want to go to King Arthur” (Eleanor Merry, 1956, in Villeneuve, 2004, p.1051). A cavalcade of three cars ventured forth from the southern beachside resort town of Torquay, across the verdant moors of Dartmoor, to the spectacularly positioned Tintagel, on the west coast of Cornwall. The journey took them through the centre of Dartmoor to Tavistock, then across to Boscastle, and down to Tintagel (B, C & D in Figure 1). Although Villeneuve (2004, p.1052) states that it was a “50-mile journey”, it is today a drive of 69 miles and of two and a quarter hours. Eleanor Merry and D.N. -

He based his epistemology on Johann Wolfgang Goethe 's world view, in which "Thinking… is no more and no less an organ of perception than the eye or ear. Steiner's father, Johann es Steiner —left a position as a gamekeeper [20] in the service of Count Hoyos in Gerasnortheast Lower Austria to marry one of the Hoyos family's housemaids, Franziska Blie Horn —Horna marriage for which the Count had refused his permission. Steiner entered the village school, but following a disagreement between his father and the schoolmaster, he was briefly educated at home. -

The Pioneers of Biodynamics in Great Britain: from Anthroposophic Farming to Organic Agriculture (1924-1940)
Journal of Environment Protection and Sustainable Development Vol. 5, No. 4, 2019, pp. 138-145 http://www.aiscience.org/journal/jepsd ISSN: 2381-7739 (Print); ISSN: 2381-7747 (Online) The Pioneers of Biodynamics in Great Britain: From Anthroposophic Farming to Organic Agriculture (1924-1940) John Paull * Environment, Resources & Sustainability, University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia Abstract Organic agriculture is the direct descendent of biodynamic agriculture; and biodynamic agriculture is the child of Dr Rudolf Steiner’s Agriculture Course presented at Koberwitz (now Kobierzyce, Poland) in 1924. Rudolf Steiner founded the Experimental Circle of Anthroposophic Farmers and Gardeners towards the end of that course. The task of the Experimental Circle was to test Steiner’s ‘hints’ for a new and sustainable agriculture, to find out what works, to publish the results, and to tell the world. Ehrenfried Pfeiffer published his book Bio-Dynamic Farming and Gardening in 1938, thereby fulfilling Steiner’s directive. Two years later, from Steiner’s characterisation of ‘the farm as an organism’, the British biodynamic farmer Lord Northbourne coined the term ‘organic farming’ and published his manifesto of organic agriculture, Look to the Land (1940). In the gestational period of biodynamics, 1924-1938, 43 individual Britons joined the Experimental Circle . Each received a copy of the Agriculture Course . Copies were numbered individually and inscribed with the name of the recipient. These 43 members were the pioneers of biodynamics and organics in Britain, and finally their names and locations are revealed. Of the 43 individuals, 11 received their Agricultural Course in German, 27 in English, and five received copies in both German and English; one couple shared a single copy.
