Increased number of visitors and shop sales by 80%; supervised four staff. • As Head of the JCMT Section responsible for building up the Section, defining functions, determining job descriptions, recruitment, induction and training of staff; establishing methods of operation, monitoring and analysing the effectiveness of these; responsible for liaison with the international user community, for management of the programme for the construction of new receivers in laboratories in three countries, and for presentation of policy, planning and reporting materials at international committees and Board in support of operations. Management of a budget of £1 million (in four currencies) and six staff (two on secondment from overseas). • Undergraduate teaching: course on neutron stars to final year students.

1991 - 2001 The Open University • 1991 - 01 Professor of Physics • 1992 - 99 Chair of Physics Department • As Chair of the Physics Department responsible for some 65 staff, including recruitment, staff development, appraisal, negotiation and scheduling of workloads, resource allocations and the delivery of teaching materials to some 4700 students p.a. on physics courses. Major development work: redirection of the Department - research income grew 5 fold between 1992 and 1996, and the number of refereed research publications grew 30%; creation and leadership of the astrophysics research group - this group grew to 25 - 30 people. • Research interests: the astrophysics of neutron stars, the study of Cygnus X-3 and other energetic binary systems, the physics of plerions. • Undergraduate teaching: astronomy and planetary science; introductory physics; relativity and ; Fourier optics. At University of Warwick, 3rd/4th year option on ‘Neutron Stars'.

Advancement of Women in Science As one of the few senior women in astronomy/physics I have found myself: • Speaking, broadcasting, prize-giving and official opening engagements where I am present as a role model or mentor • Spokeswoman for women in science; speaker about and interpreter of women in science • Representative; service on panels, committees, programmes where there is a desire to include at least one woman. • Promoter of women in science - e.g. recommending women as speakers, supporting and advising younger women. Recent Media Highlights In a typical year I make several radio or TV broadcasts. Recent programmes have included: BBC TV Beautiful Minds and Great Scientists; BBC Radio Life Scientific; RTE TV Sisters in Science; and RTE Radio Irish Scientists. In 2016 I took part in a BBC TV Stargazing Live Programme and recorded material for a Japanese astronomy TV programme Cosmic Front. In 2017 I have recorded a tribute to Vera Rubin for BBC Radio 4 Women’s Hour and featured in BBC Radio 3’s Essential Classics. I have recorded material for an RTE TV programme about LOFAR. In 2006 the Royal Astronomical Society commissioned June Mendoza to paint my portrait, in 2015 the Royal Society of Edinburgh commissioned Victoria Crowe to paint a portrait and in 2017 Oxford University commissioned a portrait of me by Ben Hughes. 2019, Stephen Shankland has been commissioned by Roy Soc to paint a portrait, and DCU has commissioned
