Ana Arzenšek POVZETEK Magistrsko delo raziskuje vlogo prvega vtisa pri vrednotenju in izbiri zaposlenih z osredotočanjem na izbor vodilnega kadra. Raziskava je podkrepljena s teoretično osnovo, predstavljeni so dejavniki tvorjenja prvega vtisa ter vloga in pomen vtisa pri vrednotenju in izboru kadra. Prav tako so teoretično predstavljene temeljne dileme upravljanja vtisa pri vrednotenju in izboru kadra. Naloga je nadgrajena z empiričnim delom na osnovi devetih polstrukturiranih individualnih intervjujih, izvedenih z lastniki, direktorji in kadrovniki v treh srednje velikih podjetjih. Izsledki raziskave kažejo, da prvi vtis nosilcev odločitev, ustvarjen le na osnovi kandidatove fotografije, lahko ključno vpliva na nadaljnji postopek vrednotenja in izbora vodilnih kadrov. Ključne besede: prvi vtis, upravljanje vtisa, zaposlovanje, izbor vodstvenega kadra, predsodki in stereotipi, zaposlitveni razgovor. SUMMARY The master thesis explores the role of the first impression in the evaluation and selection of employees by focusing on the selection of managerial staff. The research is supported with the theoretical foundation, we present the aspects and factors of the formation of the first impression, as well as the role and importance of the impressions in the evaluation and selection of personnel. Furthermore, we present the basic dilemmas of impression management in the evaluation and selection of personnel. The research is upgraded with empirical work on the basis of nine semistructured individual interviews conducted with owners, directors and human resource managers in three medium-sized companies. The results of the research show that the decision maker’s first impression formed solely on the basis of a candidate's photography can have a significant effect on the evaluation process and the selection of senior executives.     THE DESCENT OF MADNESS Drawing on evidence from across the behavioural and natural sciences, this book advances a radical new hypothesis: that madness exists as a costly consequence of the evolution of a sophisticated social brain in Homo sapiens. Having explained the rationale for an evolutionary approach to psych- osis, the author makes a case for psychotic illness in our living ape relatives, as well as in human ancestors. He then reviews existing evolutionary theor- ies of psychosis, before introducing his own thesis: that the same genes causing madness are responsible for the evolution of our highly social brain. This task was then repeated with instructions to imitate the expressions. During the experiment, a camera captured the participants’ faces for an automatic evaluation of their imitation performance. The instruction to imitate enhanced imitation performance as well as emotion recognition. Of relevance, emotion recognition improve- ments in the imitation block were larger in people with higher levels of autistic traits, whereas imitation enhancements were independent of autistic traits.

On April 29, these two fit young humans, Prince William and Kate Middleton, will be wed, and two billion people will watch. What will we see? Honestly, it depends on your sex. A confusing thing about living in a two-sexed species is that certain social rituals have quite different meanings depending on whether you watch them with a male or a female brain. Nowhere is this divide greater than in the realms of courtship and reproduction, where eons of sexual choice have shaped the evolution of human nature. A wedding may be played against a backdrop of gauzy sentimentalism, but beneath all the trimmings – the dress, the flowers, and the finger-buffet – lie the iron imperatives of sexual conflict. The mating minds of men and women have evolved to achieve different ends so it is hardly surprising that we interpret any wedding, let alone this one, in entirely different ways. Male brains will be sparked by Will’s military titles (Flight Lieutenant, Captain in the Blues and Royals, Commodore-in-Chief of Scotland) and Kate’s signals of fertility and fitness (cheekbones, legs, style, humor) to conjure a primal mating scenario – King Kong and Ann Darrow, Genghis Khan lying on the white-bellied daughters of those he has vanquished, that sort of thing.

As such, it is reasonable to propose that humans have developed a fundamental tendency to preferentially attend to eyes in the environment. The empirical evidence to support this intuition is, however, remarkably thin. Over the course of eight chapters, the present thesis considers the area of social attention, and what special role (if any) the selection of eyes has in it. Chapters 2 and 3 demonstrate that when observers are shown complex natural scenes, they look at the eyes more frequently than any other region. This selection preference is enhanced when the social content and activity in the scene is high, and when the task is to report on the attentional states in the scene. Chapters 4 and 5 establish that the bias to select eyes extends to a variety of tasks, suggesting that it may be fundamental to human social attention. In addition, Chapter 5 shows that observers who are told that they will have to remember the scenes look more often at the eyes than observers who are unaware of the forthcoming memory test; moreover this difference between groups persists to scene recognition.

Dickins University of Liverpool ABSTRACT: Recent interest in the origins of language, within the strongly cognitive field of Evolutionary Psychology, has predominantly focused upon the origins of syntax (cf. Hurford, Knight, & Studdert-Kennedy, 1998). However, Ullin Place’s (2000a) theory of the gestural origins of language also addresses the more fundamental issue of the antecedents of symbols, and does so from a behaviorist perspective, stressing the importance of the peculiarly human ability to form stimulus equivalence classes. The rejection by many developmental psychologists of a behaviorist account of language acquisition has led to a modular and distinctly nativist psychology of language (cf. Pinker, 1994, 1997; Pinker & Bloom, 1990). Little has been said about the role or nature of learning mechanisms in the evolution of language. Although Place does not provide any defense of a behaviorist linguistic ontogeny, this is no reason to rule out his phylogenetic speculations. We aim to outline Place’s evolutionarily parsimonious view of symbol origins and their relation to stimulus equivalence. We applaud Ullin Place for bringing symbols into focus within the broader discipline of language origins and suggest that he has raised an interesting set of questions to be discussed in future work. Key words: symbols, stimulus equivalence, learning. The central aim of this paper is to analyze Ullin T. Place’s contribution to the study of symbols and particularly to their evolutionary origins. Place was both a philosopher and a psychologist, but in both fields he was committed to a form of behaviorism that made him somewhat unusual in comparison with many of his colleagues (though by no means all).
