Visiting the Museum

At the Ashmolean Museum Broadway we have been improving our displays with room cards providing more information on the objects in the collection thanks to research carried out by staff and volunteers.

If you are bringing children there is a trail to follow so they can learn more about Tudor House and the art- work and we run special activities during the school holidays.

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm and Bank Holiday Mondays.

Admission Prices are £5 for adults, £2 for children and £10 for a family ticket. Don’t forget if you are a UK taxpaper you can gift aid this and receive 12 months free entry giving you a chance to visit the different exhi- bitions throughout the year.

Volunteer Fair 18th July 11am-2pm

The volunteer fair will be a great opportunity for you to discover how you can help your local community mu- seum and art gallery if you have a few hours to spare each week.

There will also be representatives from other community groups and charities at the event giving information on the voluntary roles they have available.

So if you are interested in volunteering please come and see how you can benefit some local organisations and learn what you can gain from the experience too.

F.L Griggs Exhibition

The Ashmolean Museum Broadway’s summer exhibition, which will run until 11th September celebrates the work of F. L. Griggs (1876–1938). The exhibition has been curated by Katherine Wodehouse, the Print Room Supervisor for the Western Art Department at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

The son of a baker, Griggs was born in Hitchin but moved to Chipping Campden in 1905.He is best known as a draughtsman and print-maker. His artistic career was assured in 1900 by a commission from Macmillan to illustrate their guidebook series Highways and Byways. Beginning with his native Hertfordshire (1902), he completed eleven further volumes, among them one devoted to Oxford and the Cotswolds (1905). Places that he originally encountered as an illustrator often subsequently provided him with inspiration for his own topographical and imaginative work.

Griggs’s experiments with etching began in 1895 but it was not until 1912, the year of his conversion to Ro- man Catholicism, that he created his first mature works in the medium. Thereafter, it remained his primary means of artistic expression. His profound faith reinforced his deep-seated love of the countryside and medi- eval architecture. His reputation as an etcher was unsurpassed as acknowledged by his election to the Roy- al Academy in 1931. Demonstrating an equal mastery of meticulous architectural detail and poetic effects of light and atmosphere, he created images of compelling visionary intensity.

Griggs rented Dover’s House in Chipping Campden for twenty years before designing and constructing his final home, New Dover’s House, which almost bankrupted him and remained unfinished at his death. Griggs collaborated with the renowned Arts & Crafts architect and designer, Ernest Gimson, on various projects, including several local war memorials. Later, in 1929 he founded the Campden Trust together with Gimson’s
