The Story of Indra and His VAJRA Indra Is the King of the Gods in Early Hinduism, Similar in Many Ways to Zeus in Greek Mythology, Or Odin in Norse The story of Indra and his VAJRA Indra is the King of the Gods in early Hinduism, similar in many ways to Zeus in Greek mythology, or Odin in Norse. He is the God of the weather and war, and is usually described as having red skin and four arms, and is depicted wielding the lightning bolt weapon called a VAJRA. In battle Indra was unparalleled. He defended both mortals and Gods from the forces of evil, riding into battle on his mount, the enormous four-tusked white elephant Airavata. His weapon, the VAJRA, was able to cut through any substance, divine or otherwise, acting as a spear, a mace, and a swordAd The most famous of Indra’s great battles for man’s benefit was his battle with the dragon Vritra. In his greed, Vritra had hoarded all of the water of the earth, allowing no-one else to drink it. The people of the earth were unable to fight Vritra, and so were stuck in a constant state of drought. At last, Indra was born, and his first great task was to liberate the water from Vritra. He consumed a great deal of Soma, the power-granting drink of the gods, to become incredibly powerful. He battled his way through ninety-nine fortresses, finally coming to Vritra. They battled in the sky, evenly matched in power, none besting the other. In the midst of the battle, Indra reached above the clouds and retrieved the thunderbolt, VAJRA. With it, he struck one great blow against Vritra, bursting his stomach wide open, and freeing all of the waters of the earth that were held within. This story symbolizes the great strength we can gain from such a simple posture as kneeling and the firmness of spirit needed for meditation and disciplined practice. Indra was an inspiration indeed with his Vajra representing the energy of an enlightened mind. .

It is divided into three parts: Hymns to the Mystic Fire: The entire contents of a book of this name that was published by Sri Aurobindo in 1946, consisting of selected hymns to Agni with a Fore- word and extracts from the essay “The Doctrine of the Mystics”. Other Hymns to Agni: Translations of hymns to Agni that Sri Aurobindo did not include in the edition of Hymns to the Mystic Fire published during his lifetime. An appendix to this part contains his complete transla- tions of the first hymn of the Rig Veda, showing how his approach to translating the Veda changed over the years. Commentaries and Annotated Translations: Pieces from Sri Aurobindo’s manuscripts in which he commented on hymns to Agni or provided annotated translations of them. Some translations of hymns addressed to Agni are included in The Secret of the Veda, volume 15 of THE COMPLETE WORKS OF SRI AUROBINDO. Nearly one-fourth of the hymns in the Rigveda are addressed to him. The earliest reference to the battle between Indra and Vritra is found in the Rigveda in which Vritra is described as the demon of drought. Indra killed the demon and liberated water, earning the title VRITRAHAN - the slayer of Vritra. In the Rigveda, Indra was praised as a com- - passionate friend, a brother, a father and mother in one. With the rise of Vaishnavism ( 4th century B. C. ), however, Indra lost his place of importance to Vishnu. In the Puranic versions, Indra invariably runs to Vishnu, whenever he is in trouble. He is beaten again and again by the Asuras and he is able to emerge victorious only when Vishnu bestows on him his guidance and favour. Our account of Indra's encounter with his arch enemy, Vritra, is based on the Bhagawat Purana, which differs a great deal from versions of the same episode in the Vedas and the Mahabharata.     Asian Elephants in Culture & Nature, 2016 Representation of Elephant in Hoysala Temples With reference to Hoysaleshwara Temple of Halebidu Soumya Manjunath Chavan1 Introduction Elephants are subject of many Indian mythologies, various forms of art like paintings, sculptures and architecture. The elephant is represented on the Harappan seals; the Hastyayur-veda, “The Sacred Wisdom of the longetivity of elephants is given in a compendium of over 7600 verse- couplets of the Vedas. A brief treatise called ‘matangalila’ meaning “The Playful Treatise on Elephants” contains a number of mythical details of elephants. The Airavata was the first divine elephant to proceed from the eggshell in the right hand of Brahma; followed by more elephants to form eight pairs of elephants which became the ancestors of all elephants, both in heaven and on earth. They are called the Dig-Gajas or “elephants of the directions of space”, supporting the universe at the four quarters and four points between. The myth of the ‘Airavata’ the white elephant, arising from the churning of the Milky Ocean is considered as symbolic of prosperity. Elephants are treated sacred and symbolic of strength and wisdom. Wisdom is represented by Ganesha the deity with an elephant’s head, of the Hindu pantheon. Elephants are represented in all its majesty in the sculptures of temples like, the Rock cut temple in Dhauli, Orissa; painting of Gaja Jataka in cave No. 17, Ajanta; Elephant and the lotus creeper in the Stupa of Sanchi; the elephant represented in the temple of Kailasanatha at Ellora of the 8th century AD contributed by the Rashtrakuta dynasty exhibits grandeur along with the welcoming panel in the entrance of Gajalaksmi who is flanked by two well defined elephants.
